MP604 - Effect of Elongation on the Generation of Disruption Runaway
Electrons Using LH-driven Seed
Session leader: R. Granetz
Physics operator: J. Irby
Overnight: standard ECDC and 60 C bake.
Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.
This MP will end at 15:00. (Mike Churchill will take over after that.)
Power systems as on 1100908030 (0.8 MA, limited, kappa=1.3)
A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Hybrid enabled (standard
configuration)
Gas Setup:

fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
DISABLE NINJA
Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo, HIREX-Sr, B-spectrometer GV
Torvac setup: keep gate valves open during pulse
LHCD: P_LH >= 1.0 MW, t=0.80-1.05 s; 90 deg phasing or whatever is
best for driving suprathermal electrons; ready to go on shot 2.
Gas jet: filled with 70 bar mixture of 85% He, 15% Ar. Should be DISABLED
for the start of the run
ICRF: none
Cryopump: not needed
DNB: not needed
Necessary diagnostics:
LH hard x-ray array
WIDE1, WIDE2, and LH video cameras; GHLIM camera is desirable
Thermocouples on limiters
Divertor IR camera is desirable
Plasma current Rogowski
He3 neutron detectors
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run plan: This is a continuation of the successful run on 2010/09/08. That
run clearly showed that low-elongation, limited discharges had LH-seeded
runaway electrons (RE's) surviving into the disruption current quench
(CQ), which is in contrast to normal-elongation, diverted discharges.
But the RE population was exceedingly small, and we didn't sort out the
co-dependence between elongation and configuration
(i.e. limited/diverted). In addition, the plasmas all terminated quickly
on the inboard wall, and we didn't attempt to modify this behavior.
So today, we want to try several different things, subject to available
run time:
1) Increase RE population by:
a) increase LH power to >= 1.0 MW, with optimal CD phasing
b) decrease nl_04 to 0.5e20 m-2 if possible (watch out for locked modes)
c) increase Ip to >= 1.0 MA (1.1 MA -> q=3.05). This might increase
the RE avalanche growth
2) Try to improve R-centroid control by pre-programming an outward step
in RCUR, or a downward step in IC_EF3, just a few milliseconds before
the gas jet disrupts the plasma. (Gas jet will be triggered at
t=1.000 s)
3) Separate out the effect of elongation from the effect of
configuration (i.e. limited/diverted). Try increasing the elongation
of a limited equilibrium up to 1.65. Also try decreasing the
elongation of a standard LSN equilibrium down to 1.4 (by moving ZXL
up?) If successful at either, then turn on the LH and the gas jet
and check the RE signals.
Shots 1-3:
Load seg 1 from a recent standard non-cryopump startup.
Load seg 2 from seg 2 of 1100908030, but set Ip to 1.0 MA. No LH. Watch
for locked modes. If successful, try increasing Ip to 1.1 MA. If not
successful, then reduce Ip to 0.9 MA. (3 shots)
Shots 4-5:
Turn on LH from t=0.80-1.05 s. P_LH=1.0 MW, higher if possible. (2 shots)
Shot 6-??: Trigger gas jet at t=1.000 s. Check HXR and neutrons for RE
signatures. Adjust Ip, ne, P_LH for maximum RE population.
After that, we'll explore Step 2. If there's time, explore Step 3.

| Overall a positive 2 hours. CXRS signal from the DNB was much better today than previously, even though the machine hasn't been boronized for over a week. Dalpha coverage at the IW was more complete than last run, and will allow better constraing of IW boron density measurements.
EDA H-modes were achieved with 600kA and 800kA. The last 3 shots at 1MA never went into EDA H-mode (density too low). Best shots for analysis 19 (600kA) 20 (600kA) 22 (800kA) 23 (800kA) |

Run summary for 1101104:
MP604 - Effect of Elongation on the Generation of Disruption Runaway
Electrons Using LH-driven Seed
The start of this run was delayed for nearly three hours due to computer
and/or network problems. The first plasma shot (003) was at 11:40, and it
was inboard-limited, low elongation (kappa=1.3) configuration, similar to
one of the successful shots that we had previously done during the first
run of this miniproposal, except that the plasma current was raised to 1.0
MA. But today, for some reason, the density was too high (nl_04 > 1e20
m-2), and it didn't come down much during the day. This density was
apparently too high for the lower hybrid to produce a significant
non-thermal seed population to survive the gas-jet-triggered thermal
quench. We only managed to get two shots with the gas jet and lower hybrid
(013 and 015), and neither had any signs of hard x-rays or photo-neutrons
in the current quench.

| We started out with a gas puff test this morning at around 8:30. That when well, even though computers had been slow all morning and there were some concern about the data system. It then took about 2.5 hours for Josh and Tom to get us back in operation again, fixing what seemed to be a major network problem.
The first plasma attempt with the data system operational (shot 3) produced a plasma that made it into rampdown. However, nl_04 was almost a factor of two too high. We were running inner wall limited, and there was plenty of extra gas from the walls. Shot 5 had the MGP and disrupted as expected at 1.007 s. We then had a series of fizzles. A small tweak in the gas and ef4 regained a plasma on shot 10. The following discharge was shut down by dpcs because of the very large x-ray levels (5e-6 A on SDD_X01). The density was very low, indicating we may have finally outgassed the walls. The next plasma attempt produced a fizzle, with both the prefill pressure and the ciii light higher. We then settled down into a mode toggling between plasmas and fizzles, unlike the 1100908 run in which there were only 4 fizzles. It is not clear what had changed for today's run. At 15:00, shot 1101103018, we switched mini-proposals, starting with 1101022026 loaded into seg 3. Tweaks were made to clearin, and the density set at 1e20/m^2, and the cryopump and ICRF were enabled. The machine ran extremely well from this point on. However, we had difficulty with the j-port antenna, and the trips degraded the H-modes produced. |

| Nov 3 2010 09:18:49:063AM | 1101103002 | Robert Granetz | Shot 02 -- No-power shot due to computer problems. Josh is looking into it. Next shot: go for plasma |
| Nov 3 2010 09:26:50:093AM | 1101103003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- No-power shot again. Josh and Tom are still working on the computer problems. The computers
have been really, really slow since last evening.
Next shot: Who knows?
|
| Nov 3 2010 11:47:20:917AM | 1101103003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- Plasma, full length. 1 MA, 5.4 T, inboard limited, kappa=1.32. Density was programmed
for 0.6e20 m-2, but we got 1.25e20 m-2, all off the walls. qout=3.42, so there's some
headroom on Ip if we want it.
Note: this is the 2nd shot 3. The first was much earlier today, and was a no-power shot because of
computer problems.
Next shot: repeat to unload walls and see if density comes down
|
| Nov 3 2010 12:03:48:397PM | 1101103004 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 04 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 1.16e20 m-2, inboard limited, kappa=1.32. Density is still
way too high. NINJA is definitely off. Maybe a disruption will unload the walls.
Next shot: trigger gas jet at t=1.000 s just to try unloading the walls
|
| Nov 3 2010 12:22:29:420PM | 1101103005 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 05 -- Plasma, gas jet disrupted at t=1.00 s. Density is still high prior to the disruption.
The gas jet just barely fired, but it was enough to disrupt promptly.
No hard x-rays nor neutrons, which is a good thing, since the LH was off.
Next shot: turn on LH 0.8-1.05 s; increase gas jet pulse length to 1.8 ms (from 1.7 ms); reduce
early density request.
|
| Nov 3 2010 12:31:10:757PM | 1101103006 | Robert Granetz | Shot 06 -- Fizzle. Gas jet still didn't give much gas. Next shot: repeat plasma attempt with LH and gas jet; increase gas jet pulse to 2.0 ms; |
| Nov 3 2010 12:44:05:200PM | 1101103007 | Robert Granetz | Shot 07 -- Fizzle, again. Very unusual. This time we got a lot of gas from the gas jet. Next shot: try again; decrease gas jet pulse to 1.9 ms (from 2.0 ms). |
| Nov 3 2010 12:55:42:293PM | 1101103008 | Robert Granetz | Shot 08 -- Fizzle again. Next shot: turn off gas jet until we get the plasma back |
| Nov 3 2010 01:09:59:877PM | 1101103009 | Robert Granetz | Shot 09 -- Fizzle again. Gas jet did not fire. Next shot: try for plasma again; no gas jet |
| Nov 3 2010 01:29:21:287PM | 1101103010 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 10 -- Plasma! Full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.7-0.9e20 m-2, inboard limited, kappa=1.32.
P_LH=730 kW. HXR at t=1.00 s = 4e13 s-1 (relatively low)
Next shot: repeat, with gas jet on (pulse=1.8 ms)
|
| Nov 3 2010 01:39:25:483PM | 1101103011 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 11 -- Plasma, but a short, slideaway discharge which was aborted by the control system.
Early density was very low...maybe we finally degassed the inboard wall.
Next shot: repeat with LH and gas jet
|
| Nov 3 2010 02:12:10:617PM | 1101103013 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 13 -- Plasma, gas jet disrupted at t=1.00 s. 1.0 MA, 1.0e20 m-2, inboard limited, kappa=1.32.
P_LH=744 kW. There is a huge HXR spike at the TQ, but no neutron spike, and there is
nothing after that, i.e. no spike at the CQ termination.
Next shot: repeat; increase gas jet pulse to 1.9 ms (from 1.8 ms)
|
| Nov 3 2010 02:41:15:800PM | 1101103015 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 15 -- Plasma, gas jet disrupted at t=1.00 s. 1.0 MA, 0.9e20 m-2, inboard limited, kappa=1.32.
P_LH=0.74 MW. Higher HXR level prior to the gas jet, and very high HXR peak at TQ, but
no photoneutrons at TQ, and nothing after that. Very confusing.
Next shot: reload seg 2 from shot 1100908026 (circular), and run with LH and gas jet.
|
| Nov 3 2010 02:44:06:120PM | 1101103016 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 16 -- Fizzle again.
Next shot: one more try at redoing the circular discharge (1100908026) with LH and gas jet
This will be the last shot before I turn the machine over to Mike Churchill
for his 2 hours.
|
| Nov 3 2010 02:55:29:960PM | 1101103017 | Robert Granetz | Shot 17 -- Fizzle. Next shot: end of my part of the run day |
| Nov 3 2010 03:19:32:817PM | 1101103018 | Mike Churchill | First scan shot L-gap to go to ~0.5cm, have more coverage with IW CXRS.
NINJA enabled B-16 trigger 0.96, to hit ~1.06 E-TOP trigger 0.93, to hit ~1.06 |
| Nov 3 2010 03:33:01:753PM | 1101103018 | Mike Churchill | Not enough RF, D & E didn't fire, no EDA H-mode.
Some CX enhancement (even in this L-mode), may be interesting Changing back to normal gap sweep, with a ~0.5cm closer L-gap |
| Nov 3 2010 03:48:04:483PM | 1101103019 | Mike Churchill | Nice little EDA H-mode.
Good CXRS enhancement from both the DNB and NINJA. Outer most 2 diodes saturating, will turn up fnos. L-gap lowered by ~0.3cm Next shot add second gas puff on IW later in shot, trigger 1.1, hit ~1.2 |
| Nov 3 2010 04:02:05:270PM | 1101103020 | Mike Churchill | EDA H-mode 600 kA
CXRS signal looking good, 30-40% enhancement (whos needs boronization?) 2nd IW puff not much enhancement. May take a shot turning off OW gas puff Moving up to higher current, 800 kA |
| Nov 3 2010 05:05:05:603PM | 1101103021 | Mike Churchill | Tripping on the RF, lose E-ant half way through, loses H-mode.
Try 800 kA again |
| Nov 3 2010 05:05:28:087PM | 1101103022 | Mike Churchill | Better, J-ant tripping a lot. Have D&E give more power, reduce J.
Try 800 kA again |
| Nov 3 2010 05:07:55:960PM | 1101103025 | Mike Churchill | More RF tripping.
Next: Try 1MA again, raise density |
| Nov 3 2010 05:19:36:880PM | 1101103026 | Mike Churchill | More RF tripping. After 1.2s more constant. |
