| This is MP 619: Effects of ICRF and LH on SOL density profiles.
There are two objectives of this MP. Firstly, the SOL reflectometer will be calibrated to other density profile diagnostics by varying the SOL density profiles as much as possible. Secondly, ICRF and/or LH will be added to see their effects on the SOL density profile. Working gas: D2 No boronization and standard ECDC. ICRF and LH, and cryopump needed. Required diagnostics are Thomson scattering, A and F port scanning probes, LH langmuir probes. Desired diagnostics are emissive/ion sensitive probes. A-coil will be needed for possible locked modes. DNB can be run if others desire. Load shot 1101028029. A/F port scanning probes should scan at .8,1,1.3s. Repeated Shot may be necessary for Thomson scattering alignment; repeats will definitely be necessary so that the probes get into the separatrix. LH Launcher position: .1mm LH phasing: 90 degrees LH power: 300kW LH start and stop times: see below. Run for a bit more than half day. Shot 1: nl04= .5 x 10^20 m-2. I=.6MA, LH at 300kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 2: nl04= .5 x 10^20 m-2. I=.8MA, LH at 300kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 3: nl04= .5 x 10^20 m-2. Monitor edge TS coverage. ------------------ Setup of first shot: ------------------ SL requests a load from 1101028029. This is a 5.4T 0.8MA USN discharge with a cold cryopump. nl04 demand is 4e19; actual is 4--5e19. 75ms Ar puff in seg2. This shot was a bouncer with a hard x-ray spike, which the PO (Wukitch) subsequently tried to ameliorate with an increase in IC_EF4U. However he noted that this delayed breakdown a bit, and recommended reversing the Bz change and using a higher pre-fill pulse. I like this advice. So, load from 1101028029. Increase PG3 pre-fill pulse from 45ms to 50ms. Leave nl04 demand at 4e19, assuming that actual density will be higher. Saved as shot 1101116101 in /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch/ As of 14:13, the LH group is beginning to calibrate, and it looks like we are likely to proceed as planned. Load from 1101116101 in my scratch area. Double-checking the SL's plan, I see that his first condition is 0.6MA. Reduced Ip demand from -800000 to -600000 in Seg2. Do load: Load at 15-Nov-2010 14:23:57.00 Should be ready for first shot now. ----------------------- Shot sequence ----------------------- SL's shot sequence requests mainly changes in Ip and nl04. See SL_PLAN entry for details. |

| It was a good run. There were quite a few disruptions and a couple of fizzles, but 13 of the 17 (did not get to case 3,6,14 and 16) cases were done. Shots with 20MHz sampling rates had some issues. This may have affected case 2.
Cross calibration with the scanning probes were done for a wide range of densities (5.d19 < nl04 < 1.d20) and currents (600 to 1200 kA). For the standard efit mapping to midplane, the densities from the A and F port scanning probes looked lower than the reflectometer inverted densities. It is likely that the different locations of the probes give different SOL profiles. Other possibilities are poloidal asymmetries in the density profiles and/or significant mapping errors. The Thomson scattering data looks reasonable compared to the reflectometry data, but detailed averaging over the ohmic, ICRF, LH pulses is required for better comparisions. More analysis will be carried out. From a physics point of view, a few trends were seen in previous piggyback runs, but were confirmed today. The increase in SOL density when the LH is turned on is minimal for lower line averaged densities, but significant at higher line averaged densities. Is this trend related to what we believe to be significant LH power being deposited in the SOL at higher line averaged densities? This will fit the story nicely. This trend has also been seen in other plasma geometries on other days. The changes due to ICRF are not as apparent as the changes due to LH. This may possibly due to the fact that the SOL reflectometer is located a few ports away or because the ICRF has significantly more complicated SOL physics. There are some indications that it is lowering density in the far SOL and raising density in the near SOL. If this is the case, this will be consistent with experiments in previous tokamaks. Comparisons between different antennas and different ICRF powers will need to be done to check that this is the right picture. |

Today was kind of a mixed bag operationally, but significant progress was made on MP619. We began the day with 2 no-power shots to test the gas pulse and to verify TF scanner operation. Then we proceeded to the first part of the MP, namely obtaining calibration points for the SOL reflectometer. Of the 9 conditions specified in the run plan (involving scans of density and current), 7 conditions were met: #1,2,4,5,7,8 and 9. We made no progress on discharges at Ip=1MA, nl04=4e19 (Condition 3), or at Ip=1.2MA, nl04=7e19 (Condition 6). Shots 8 and 14 were attempts to run these lower Greenwald fraction cases, and both disrupted early, probably due to locked modes. In the interest of time we stopped pursuing these conditions. After shot 20 we proceeded to part II of the SL's plan, which involved an investigation of ICRF effects on the SOL profile. He chose basically to repeat shot 18 (Ip=0.8MA, nl04=0.9--1.0e20) with varying levels of ICRF power from D and E separately, and then from J alone and D and E stacked. We succeeded in obtaining cases 10,11,12,14 and 17 from the SL_PLAN. There were some early hards and bounces on shots 4--6. I attempted to combat this with increased PG3 (40%-->50%) before 100ms, and increased PG4 pre-fill. Later, the PG3 pulse was returned to the 40% level (starting with shot 19), with no negative consequence. Later in the day, though, there was a particularly bad runaway shot, 030, which was automatically shut down by DPCS at 0.18s. No clear operational cause was found. An additional issue with the starting USN equilibrium for today was that the strikepoint was on the pumping slots, and seemed to heat up some leading edges significantly at the end of the day in repeated 1MA discharges. Disruptions on shots 27 and 28 were likely due to this, and moving RXU in by a full 1cm appeared to remedy this for shots 29 and 31. Finally there were some peculiarities in power supply behavior to note. (1) First there is a oscillatory behavior in the EF1U voltage. This was caught by Steve Wolfe today, though inspection by Bill Cochran revealed that this behavior began over a week ago in the middle of shot 1101105016. It does not appear to be interfering with the proper operation of the machine, but it must still be diagnosed. (2) More severe was an unexplained early crowbar on EF1U on shot 22 that led to a nasty disruption. (3) Somewhat more banal is the fact that the A-coils were accidentally turned off from shots 26 to 28 due to a contact not being reclosed after a cell access. It is possible that this contributed to the disruptions on 27 (sawtoothing) and/or 28 (not sawtoothing), but my guess is it was really just due to heat flux in a bad place, as I note above. Anyway, despite these problems, plus some data system hang-ups, it was not a bad run day altogether. Scorecard: Total shots: 31 No power shots: 3 Duds: 1 (no OH or EF1) Fizzles: 2 Plasmas disrupting in ramp-up: 4 Plasmas disrupting in flattop: 4 Plasmas to rampdown: 17 |

| Nov 16 2010 09:44:13:957AM | 1101116003 | Cornwall Lau | plasma was good. Something is wrong with the reflectometer data here.
next shot: same plasma. Hopefully, probes will be fired and work as well as the reflectometer working |
| Nov 16 2010 09:58:25:043AM | 1101116004 | Cornwall Lau | good shot. repeat once more for better probe coverage and for edge thomson data. reflectometer got good data this time when I moved back to 10MHz sampling rate and tightened some connections? |
| Dec 6 2010 12:35:29:563AM | 1101116005 | Cornwall Lau | everything looked good:
next shot: moving on to #2 of run plan. Plots with comparisions to scanning probes and Thomson scattering are shown. Thomson fit has artificial 0 at .91. Yunxing tells me that when he put in 5x10^18 at .91, the fit matched even better inside the separatrix.

| Feb 8 2011 01:36:47:590PM | 1101116006 | Cornwall Lau | looks good.
next shot: repeat once more to get the probes in slightly deeper. 20MHz sampling rate is problematic. It seems that reflectometer data is shrunk to .5 to 1s. so .6 at reflectometer is really .7 etc. keywords: data analysis problem |
| Nov 16 2010 03:40:16:703PM | 1101116007 | Cornwall Lau | good shot.
next shot: moving on to #3 of run plan. E is having issues, so we are using D for 1.1 to 1.4s |
| Nov 16 2010 10:54:13:607AM | 1101116008 | Cornwall Lau | disruption.
repeat next shot with 10MHz sampling rate. |

let's move on to #7 of run plan. |
| Dec 6 2010 08:30:02:097PM | 1101116017 | Cornwall Lau | good shot. E was on at 1.1 to 1.4s since D is down.
moving on to #8 of run plan. First plot is LH at high densities (notice the ionization). Second plot is E antenna at 800kA at nl04~.9. It can be noticed that for LH, at low densities, there isn't much ionization, while there is some at higher densities. Compare shots 5,12,17.

| Nov 16 2010 03:59:48:253PM | 1101116026 | Cornwall Lau | plasma looks good. launcher was moving slowly and approximately at 18.5mm. There does not seem to be significant change with ICRF power. Let's move on to #14. Maybe I'll see more differences there. |
| Nov 16 2010 04:15:18:777PM | 1101116027 | Cornwall Lau | disruption
next shot: same thing except upper x-point moving inwards a bit (something came off of upper divertor). as i just happen to start a new set of shots, this will not affect the comparisions at different ICRF powers |
| Nov 16 2010 04:25:45:097PM | 1101116028 | Cornwall Lau | another disruption.
next shot: (temporarily?) skipping #14 and moving to #15 |

| Nov 16 2010 09:34:17:870AM | 1101116003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3:
Plasma attempt. Result: Plasma, full length. Got LH and RF. SL is satisfied with the nl04. Maybe a bit too much pre-fill. Equilibrium looks okay, though the strike point is on the pumping slots. SL needs a lab access. |
| Nov 16 2010 10:13:43:093AM | 1101116004 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 4.
No changes. Result: Plasma, full length. Some early hards in the startup, followed by nasty injections before 0.6s. |
| Nov 16 2010 10:05:19:790AM | 1101116005 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 5:
No changes. Result: Plasma, full length. Still significant early hards. Also an early bounce. SL is happy with the data. Check off condition 1. |

We will retry condition (4). Result: Plasma, full length. Resultant nl04 is slightly lower than demand. Startup looks decent. Despite the high pressure on the previous shot, it seems to be in a good range here with no changes. |
| Nov 16 2010 12:37:06:120PM | 1101116013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13.
Go to condition (5). Changes: Changed IP in Seg 2 from -8e5 to -1e6. No changes to gas, nl04 program. Load at 16-Nov-2010 12:26:31.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma, full length. Startup is ok. Bad early injection at 0.12s, but it recovers. Moving on to condition (7). Reload shot 12 (0.8MA) and change nl04 program in Seg 2 to 1.1e20. Load at 16-Nov-2010 12:55:41.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Reuslt: |
| Nov 16 2010 01:22:57:940PM | 1101116016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16:
Retry, but with a reduced density demand early Change: Have the nl04 demand reach 0.9e20 at beginning of flattop, then ramp to 1.1e20 by 1.5s. Load at 16-Nov-2010 13:06:50.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma, full length. RF case was not obtained. Backing off the early density demand seems to have helped. PG3 is never full open, and so there is potentially room for increasing the density. |
| Nov 16 2010 01:31:00:277PM | 1101116017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17.
Retry to get RF data for SL. Changes: Try to get the density up slightly sooner. Program nl04 wire to reach 1.0e20 at 0.6s and ramp to 1.1e20 at 1.5s. Load at 16-Nov-2010 13:21:42.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma, full length. Density in flattop is acceptable. SL is happy with the shot. |
| Nov 16 2010 01:45:59:163PM | 1101116018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Moving on to Condition (8) Changes: IP demand in Seg 2 from -8e5 to -1e6. No changes to gas or nl04 program yet. Load at 16-Nov-2010 13:32:43.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma, full length. Density is very close to that previous shot. SL is satisfied. Moving on the Condition (9). |
| Nov 16 2010 01:56:10:443PM | 1101116019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19.
Moving on to Condition (9). Change: IP demand in Seg 2 from -1e6 to -1.2e6. Also reduced PG3 in Seg 1 from 50% to 40%. No change to nl04 demand. Load at 16-Nov-2010 13:52:02.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Fizzle. Apparently the cryopump burped. |
| Nov 16 2010 02:21:31:997PM | 1101116020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20.
Retry for condition (9). No changes. Result: Plasma, full length. SL is content with the data. This shot railed EF1L, but we are going to lower Ip now, so I will ignore. |
| Nov 16 2010 02:30:51:733PM | 1101116021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21.
Moving on to Part II of the run plan. SL likes shot 18 (1.0MA, nl04~0.9--1.0e20) Change: IP demand in Seg 2 from -1.2e6 to -1.0e6. Also, ask for full current at 0.25s instead of 0.35s. Load at 16-Nov-2010 14:18:04.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Disrupts at 0.59s. Looks like something fell in at 0.46s. Startup ok. |
| Nov 16 2010 03:03:37:670PM | 1101116022 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 22.
Retry. Changes: Enabling B-side lower (Ar). PG1 pulse is already programmed for 0.300--0.375s. Result: Lost EF1L at 0.4s, disrupts at 0.57s. A fuse had to be replaced in EF1U. |
| Nov 16 2010 03:13:33:223PM | 1101116023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23.
Retry. Result: Plasma, full length. This is case (10). |
| Nov 16 2010 03:28:25:620PM | 1101116024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Condition (11). No changes. Result: Plasma, full length. D and E both fired. Injection at 0.71s doesn't do any permanent damage. |
| Nov 16 2010 03:41:14:247PM | 1101116025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25.
Case (12). No PO changes. Result: Plasma, full length. D and E into the discharge separately. |
| Nov 16 2010 03:56:04:930PM | 1101116026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26.
Case (13). No PO changes. Result: Plasma, full length. D and E fire at the 1MW level. LH launcher was moved back due to a misunderstanding, so SL's data may not be so useful on this shot. |
| Nov 16 2010 04:20:24:913PM | 1101116027 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 27.
Case (14). No PO changes. Result: Disruption at 0.39s, following build up of Prad. From WIDE2 there seem to be some hot spots on the pumping slots. |
| Nov 16 2010 04:32:27:277PM | 1101116028 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 28. Change: Decrease RXU in Seg2 by 0.005m. Load at 16-Nov-2010 16:18:14.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Still starts to radiate and disrupt at around the same times. Perhaps not aggressive enough with the RXU change. Also, Steve Wolfe notices the A-coil current has been off since shot 26. This shot is not sawtoothing. Notably, though, shot 27 is. |
| Nov 16 2010 04:35:54:110PM | 1101116029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29.
Changes: Decreased RXU another 0.005m. A-coil turned back on. (It had been off since 26 due to a contactor being left open after an access.) Result: Plasma, full length. J@1MW, (D+E)@1MW |
| Nov 16 2010 04:53:52:473PM | 1101116030 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 30.
