SL Plan

Shots 1-2: Repeatable LH modulated shots @ nl04 ~ 4e19 m-2, ~50 ms on, ~50 ms off
Shots 3-4: Repeatable LH modulated shots @ nl04 ~6.0e19 m-2, ~50 ms on, ~50 ms off

Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.

Standard overnight ECDC and vessel temps

Power systems as on 1101019014 (5.4 T, 800 kA, USN)
But will need to be able to go DN, LSN and limited for this run, e.g. old reference shots of 1100820005 (limited) and 1100820010 (DN) need to be possible to run.

A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot;

Hybrid enabled (standard configuration)

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
DISABLE Ninja

PO shot plan:

SL will use LH in square wave modulated pulses, 50 ms on, 50 ms off

Load USN equilibrium from shot 1101019014 into segment 2, but set target density to nl_04 = 1e19, Keep the current, I_p = 800 kA, and field, B_T = 5.4 T.

Find good cryopump startup from weds or tues and load that into segment 1.

Once we get good start-up going, we will take 10 shots to do a density scan, 2 shots each, going from nl04 = 1e19, 4e19, 6e19, 8e19 and 1e20.

Then, switch to inner wall limited discharge, e.g., 1100820005 and repeat above shot sequence, and SL will want density scanned from low to high.

If time, switch to near DN discharge, e.g., 1100820010, and repeat nl04 density scan sequence beginning at 4e19.

A fairly good run, accomplishing most of the run plan.

The objective was to inject LH power near and above the density limit, and use ECE and Thomson primarily to determine if significant power is absorbed by the plasma above the density limit, even without the usual signatures of a nonthermal population of electrons.

For this purpose the LH was modulated 50 ms on, 50 ms off and the 30 Hz Thomson lasers were synchronized to the LH pulses, with equal spaced pulses beginning at LH turn on, for a total of 7 pulses per full LH period. Early in the run, a second identical plasma pulse was run with the lasers delayed by 8.33 ms, thus providing Thomson data every 8.33 ms during a sequence of 5 LH pulses. Later in the run, in the interests of time, the second plasma was omitted, so for these shots Thomson data were available only at 16.7 ms intervals, again measured from LH pulse turn on or turn off.

The plasmas run were 800 kA, 5.4 T discharges, both USN and inner wall limited. Some difficulty with locked modes was encountered at densities below nl_04 ~ 6e19 m-2.

Analysis of the results will take some time, but the control room observation was that negligible power is delivered to the plasma across the separatrix once the density limit is exceeded. This would seem to leave only the possibility that the SOL must absorb the LH power above the density limit. A fuller diagnosis of the SOL --profiles,ionization loss, heat flowing to the divertor plates,etc -- should be carried out under these conditions.

goal of run was to modulate the LH on off and look for evidence of central heating.

Overall, an good day operationally. Machine ran well. Thank you everyone!

Lost shots:
5 shots were lost to disruptions (shots 05, 07, 21, 23, 30) from locked modes apparently.
One shot was lost to fizzle (shot 06)
Magnetics data were lost on shot 1 due to error in digitizer and could not be recovered.
Other notes:
During the day, breakdown started to drift later in time to t = 0.01 sec. It should normally be at t = 0.005 sec.
To remedy this we adjusted the pulse gas 4 pulse between 53-63 ms, and Bz0 by changes to IC_EF4U. We found the optimum
settings were PULSE GAS 4 = 58 ms, ICEF4U = -1300.

There was some variability of the vessel pressure before the shots early in the day (cause of fizzle on 06 was the too high pressure in startup). we kept an eye on it and by late morning it was steady at ~2e-7 Torr before the shots.

Disruptions were caused by locked modes. These seemed to come in in at fairly high densities of 6e19 or so. Last shot of day had the density rise programmed in before the requested lower density, this seemed to help and we did not have a locked mode early in the shot, but later in shot it disrupted due to locked mode when nl04 fell to ~ 6.3 e19 or so.

Tried several changes to the density control today with modifications to prop gain to try and level things out but this was unsuccessful.
For USN shots with the cryopump, it seems the best recipe for ne control is high prop gain of 9 until t = 0.3 sec or so, then steady at 8 in flat top. deriv 3, integrator 1. see shot 34 from today. prop was too low (4) to keep ne from drooping later on. Also, it seems that it is best to program in the ne overshoot to avoid early locked modes and then reduce the ne later in time. Several of USN day I have seen have this recipe when lowish nl04 between 3-5 e19 was requested.

No magnetics data coming back (no data in efit scope, no loop voltage, no plasma current...).

Start-up looks good, no bounces.

Plan for next shot:

in DPCS on nl04 change demand for 4e19 to t ~ 0.4 instead on t~0.25, i.e.
slow the request for density rise early in shot to try and avoid the early overshoot in nebar and the subsequent slow decay in time during the shot.
