| This is MP 619: Effects of ICRF and LH on SOL density profiles.
This is a continuation in understanding the density profiles due to ICRF and LH. This section will focus on the effects due to high ICRF power in both L and H-modes. This run is scheduled for the second half of the day. Gas request: D2. No boronization and standard ECDC. ICRF: E and J requested at maximum power LH: No, although the LH launcher needs to be moved in to .1mm. Cryopump: No DNB: Not required, but can be used. Requested diagnostics: Thomson scattering, LH langmuir probes Desired diagnostics: emissive/ion sensitive probes Run plan: Part a) Outer gap scan (1 shot). Load shot 1101207007. Change field to 5.1T. Part b) H-modes (5 shots) Load 1101020001. Change current to 1MA. Power scan at high E/J power. (E will run at 1/1.5/.5 from .6 to .9 and J will run from 2/2.5/1 from 1.1 to 1.4). If H-modes are tough at low powers, move on to current scan at highest powers possible Current scan. Choose one of above case and do at .8 and 1.2MA. Part c) L-modes (3 shots). Load 1101116024. Note this is a cryopump startup. Raise RF power to 1.5MW with E and 2MW with J Do center, top, middle horn. Cell access will be required 3 times to change the horn location. Part d) (1 shot) Density ramp of with only E antenna. Load one shot in part c), but demand nl04 like 1100818001 Part e) (2 shots). If have time, do a current scan of part c) at .8 and 1.2MA. Part f) (2 shots) If have even more time, go back to part b) and raise/lower target density. |

| I-modes were obtained over a range of magnetic fields from 4.2 to 6.3 T, with the ICRF resonance on both the HFS and LFS. There was no evidence for any ITB formation below 4.6 T or above 6.1 T, where ITBs had previously been observed with favorable drift and in EDA H-mode plasmas. No density peaking or drop in core rotation was observed, so for these target conditions, there was no ITB formation evolving out I-modes with off-axis ICRF. There was some evidence for even flatter density and temperature profiles than normal. |

| The half run day was somewhat difficult, but reasonable data was achieved. The first hour of the day was delayed due to a blown fuse; it took the engineering team a while to track the problem down. The rest of the day was plagued with disruptions, especially at 1MA and 1.2MA. Ron eventually pinpointed it to a vertical disruption, due to too high of an elongation. Raising the lower x point by 2cm seemed to help a bit. In the future, other solutions could include increasing the inner gap and reducing zcur.
Good shots were 25,28,29, which were identical except for having the top, bottom, and middle horn look at each of them. An ability to analyze the asymmetries in the density profiles could be achieved. Shots 30 and 19 achieved a large density, and outer gap scan with E antenna, respectively. This is worth a further look. Shot 19 can be compared with results from yesterday. Shots 20,21,22,23 had a ICRF power scan in ELM-free H-modes for E and J antenna. Differences may be seen. Further analysis will need to be done. |

| A somewhat difficult run day, particularly for high current (G.E. 1 MA) shots.
The first "half" of the run was exploratory, investigating whether it would be possible to produce ITB's in I-mode shots. The first 18 shots were devoted to this study, and by and large the machine performed as programmed by the PCS. As the field was lowered with fixed current, decreasing q, some difficulty with early disruptions was encountered. This was fixed by increasing the early gas programming, which tends to prevent hollow current profiles from forming. However, at 4.3 T, the current had to be reduced from 1.1 MA to 1.0 MA, in order to avoid a q ~ 3 disruption. Overall from the Physop point of view, the machine ran well for this part of the run, well enough to accomplish the physics objectives. The second part of the run had the objective of exploring the SOL and divertor density profile with ICRH using the X-Mode reflectometer. A total of 12 shots were attempted for this part of the run. This part of the run was shortened by a ~ 1 hour delay caused by failure of the TMX power supply contactor to close. The problem was found to be a blown fuse. Once replaced the rest of the run proceeded without incident. Again, some difficulty with disruptions was encountered with 1 MA shots, even though the field was the nominal 5.4 T. Fortunately the disruptions occurred just at the beginning of rampdown, so they were sufficient for acquiring data. It appeared that the disruptions were due to vertical instability with n/n_crit greater than 1. The take home lesson here is to look more closely at requested shots before loading them, particularly the elongation and decay index. There was one try at 1.2 MA, which disrupted. Presumably this could have been tuned, but the SL leader decided to move on in the interests of time. The remaining 3 shots in the run featured 800 kA plasmas which ran full length. Scorecard: 30 Plasma Attempts, 1 No power shot, 22 either full length or into rampdown (or nearly so), 6 early disruptions and 1 dud due to a pulled breaker. |

| Jan 26 2011 08:39:58:010AM | 1101208019 | Cornwall Lau | First shot for my run plan.
Attempt: Repeat 1101207007 except with 5.1T Result: Good. Again, the ICRF made it all the way in this outer gap scan. The loading resistance on E antenna surprisingly did not change much even with this large change of an outer gap. Analysis will need to be done. Update: Thomson scattering is available here, although it's not in w_dens. It looks reasonable compared to the reflectometer data. Next: Moving on to potential H-modes. Loading 1101020001. Change to 1MA. E at 1MW from .6 to .9s and J at 2MW from 1.1 to 1.4s. |
| Dec 8 2010 02:52:18:003PM | 1101208020 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Load 1101020001, increase current to 1MA. E at 1MW from .6 to .9, J at 2MW from 1.1 to 1.4.
Result: Good. The attempt at H-mode was successful for J, but not for E. Plasma also disrupted at 1.44, after both ICRF pulses. Raising the density may help H-mode access, and possibly get rid of the disruption, if it is a locked mode. Next: Increase nl04 demand to .6 from .4. Increase ICRF power to 1.5 MW for E and 2.5MW for J. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:03:47:027PM | 1101208021 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: nl04 was increased to .6. Power from E and J were increased.
Result: Transient H-modes in E. H-modes in J. Disruption after J ramped down. Is J causing the disruption here? Next: Change E power to 1.25MW and J to 1.5MW. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:17:07:350PM | 1101208022 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Change E power to 1.25MW and J to 1.5MW.
Result: H-mode in J, transient H-modes in E. Disrupted in rampdown this time. Next: Start the current scan. Current will go to 800kA. E and J both at 1.5MW. |
| Dec 14 2010 04:43:30:650PM | 1101208023 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Switch to 800kA. Change E power to 1.5MW and J to 1.5MW.
Result: still was at 1MA (operator error?). The H-modes do look reasonably decent. Steve pointed out the hysteresis on the loading on E during the L-H and H-L transition around. It's worth a look. RF power does not affect profiles that much in H-modes it seems. Seems to correlate better with pedestal height Next: Now switch to 800kA. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:49:31:200PM | 1101208024 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Redo what was supposed to happen in 23
Result: No plasma Next: Repeat. Lower the elongation a bit (see operator plan for change in zxl). Ron thinks a vertical instability was causing the previous disruption issue. |
| Dec 11 2010 10:17:13:447PM | 1101208025 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Redo what was supposed to happen in 23
Result: good and no disruption. changing the zxl did seem to help. Some transient H-modes in both E and J antenna Next: Try 1.2 MA. ![]() |
| Dec 8 2010 04:14:44:043PM | 1101208026 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: move to 1.2MA
Result: disruption after a bit of E ICRF. I probably got a bit of data. Next: let's keep this shot in mind and move on to the USN case. Time is ticking. Load 1101116024, with E at 1MW, J at 1.5MW. |
| Dec 8 2010 04:26:11:213PM | 1101208027 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: Load 1101116024, with E at 1MW, J at 1.5MW.
Result: disruption Next: redo shot 25 with bottom horn. |
| Dec 11 2010 10:17:21:437PM | 1101208028 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: redo shot 25 only with bottom horn since it was the only good shot of the day.
Result: looks very identical to 25 Next: repeat. switch to top horn. ![]() |
| Dec 14 2010 04:42:51:583PM | 1101208029 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: repeat. switch to top horn.
Result: looks good Seems to be a up down asymmetry when RF is turned on (and without). It seems that the bottom horn has higher density during ohmic, but application of RF drives density upwards, as compared to the ohmic density profiles. Speculation is that this is ErxB due to RF sheaths (upwards???), as well as ExB and ion diamagnetic drift (ohmic and downwards for both) Next: density scan. change 1100818001 to 800kA. ![]() |
| Dec 8 2010 05:05:32:063PM | 1101208030 | Cornwall Lau | Attempt: density scan for LSN shot. change 1100818001 to 800kA.
Result: result (loading) looked interesting before the H-mode and after the H-mode. Definitely worth a look. Next: Last shot of the day. |

| Dec 8 2010 08:51:58:917AM | 1101208001 | Ron Parker | Good morning, nice day, a bit chilly.
Contrary to SL plan, we are starting with shot 1100817013 in Segment 2, using a startup from yesterday, 1101207005, but with pg4 set at 50 ms since cryo will be on. |
| Dec 8 2010 09:08:05:250AM | 1101208001 | Ron Parker | Unfortunately, a no-power shot. Cap bank power supplies weren't on. |
| Dec 8 2010 09:28:46:887AM | 1101208002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 ran into rampdown with programmed current, density.
RF had a few trips, T_e(0)~ 4 keV. No PCS changes for next shot. |
| Dec 8 2010 09:39:53:460AM | 1101208003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 started up well, reached 150 kA and quenched.
Try again |
| Dec 8 2010 09:55:55:063AM | 1101208004 | Ron Parker | After elaborate tuning, shot 4 ran full length with nice rampdown.
There was an early, transient H-mode, folllowed apparently by an extended I-mode. Next: Flattop field reduced to 5.4 T from 5.67 T as in previous shots. |
| Dec 8 2010 10:07:00:153AM | 1101208005 | Ron Parker | Another full lengther.
For the next trick, we'll lower field to 4.8 T (133 kA TF current) keeping all other PCS settings the same. |
| Dec 8 2010 10:28:17:273AM | 1101208006 | Ron Parker | Another full length shot, although the current rise is not as smooth as one would like.
However, the I-mode part of the discharge seems unaffected, so we won't try to fix the earlier current rise issues. Next: B_T lowered from 4.8 T to 4.7 T. |
| Dec 8 2010 10:37:41:993AM | 1101208007 | Ron Parker | Early disruption, at 0.57 s.
It may take a shot or two to recover. |
| Dec 8 2010 10:47:32:330AM | 1101208008 | Ron Parker | Another early disruption. A suggestion has been made to increase the early gas, so we'll try it for the next shot. |
| Dec 8 2010 11:07:46:137AM | 1101208009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 ran full length. apparently ramping the density up faster helped.
Next: Same discharge, B_T = 4.5 T. |
| Dec 8 2010 11:16:41:240AM | 1101208010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 made it throough rampdown.
A brief H-mode, then I-mode. Next: B_T lowered to 4.4 T (flirting with danger) |
| Dec 8 2010 11:33:05:983AM | 1101208011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 ran full length at 4.4 T.
Next: Same shot, 4.3 T. |
| Dec 8 2010 11:47:28:433AM | 1101208012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 ran full length, but field was still 4.4 T, not 4.3 T.
Redo the shot, lower B_T to 4.3, assuming 150 kA produces 5.4 T. |
| Dec 8 2010 12:03:12:090PM | 1101208013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 disrupted early, t = 0.52 s
Next: reduce current to 1.0 MA (from 1.1 MA) |
| Dec 8 2010 12:18:13:270PM | 1101208014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 ran full length, albeit at 1.0 MA
Next: Same shot, but field lowered from 4.35 to 4.20 |
| Dec 8 2010 12:38:43:733PM | 1101208015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 ran full length at 4.2 T, 1 MA
Next: Filed will ramp to 6.3 T, I_p = 1.1 MA |
| Dec 8 2010 12:48:28:273PM | 1101208016 | Ron Parker | Shot ran full length but field was set to engineering limit of 165 kA.
Next: Increase engineeering limit on field raised to 180, programmed to 175 kA on PCS. |
| Dec 8 2010 01:03:21:220PM | 1101208017 | Ron Parker | Shot 17 ran full length, but field was only 6.2, not 6.3 T
Repeat with field increase to 6.3. |
| Dec 8 2010 01:26:09:073PM | 1101208018 | Ron Parker | Shot 18 ran full length at 6.3+ T.
This completes the first part of today's run. We are now switching to MP619, and loading shot 1101207007 with field reduced to 5.1 T for the first shot. |
| Dec 8 2010 01:30:32:160PM | 1101208018 | Ron Parker | Delay, hopefully short, due to contactor not closing in TMX supply in power room. |
| Dec 8 2010 02:06:43:500PM | 1101208018 | Ron Parker | Delay seems to be longer than expected. Nearly 1 hour so far |
| Dec 8 2010 02:24:14:737PM | 1101208018 | Ron Parker | Problem was traced to a blown fuse, which has just now been replaced.
We should be ready for the first shot in this part of the run momentarily. |
| Dec 8 2010 02:46:13:190PM | 1101208019 | Ron Parker | Shot 19 ran, not full length but sufficient for data collection purposes.
NexT: Load shot 1101020001 from SL's run plan, increasing current to 1 MA. |
| Dec 8 2010 02:51:08:930PM | 1101208020 | Ron Parker | Shot 20 disrupted at 1.436 s during H-mode caused by heating from J antenna. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:03:00:593PM | 1101208021 | Ron Parker | Shot 21 was similar to shot 20, disrupting at ~ 1.4 s during heating pulse from J antenna.
Next: Same, but J power will be lowered to 1.5 MW. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:24:02:127PM | 1101208022 | Ron Parker | Shot 22 just made it to rampdown, then disrupted.
Next: Moving on, lower current to 800 kA. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:37:57:187PM | 1101208023 | Ron Parker | OOPs, shot 23 was still a 1 MA shot -- and it still disrupted at the beginnning of rampdown.
Next: Try again for 800 kA. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:44:50:317PM | 1101208024 | Ron Parker | A dud, EF1 commutated early. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:51:06:850PM | 1101208024 | Ron Parker | Disruptions seem to be caused by vertical instability. The elongation is presumably too high; we'll try to reduce it by raising ZXL by 2 cm. |
| Dec 8 2010 03:59:47:727PM | 1101208025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 ran full length, but at 800 kA (as programmed)
Next: increase current to 1.2 MA. |
| Dec 8 2010 04:14:22:310PM | 1101208026 | Ron Parker | Shot 26 disrupted early at 1.2 MA. Instead of trying to tune it, SL has decided to move on to SN shot: 1101116024 |
| Dec 8 2010 04:27:53:077PM | 1101208027 | Ron Parker | Shot 27 disrupted early, again vertically unstable.
We are now returning to the last good shot, 1101208025 |
| Dec 8 2010 04:45:26:653PM | 1101208028 | Ron Parker | Shot 28 reproduced shot 25, as was intended, and was full length. |
| Dec 8 2010 05:01:07:560PM | 1101208029 | Ron Parker | Shot 29 ran full length |
| Dec 8 2010 05:01:51:587PM | 1101208030 | Ron Parker | Shot 30 ran full length.. |
