Cryopump ON. DNB is essential; timing may be varied shot to shot.
Argon (for HIREX) will be puffed. Also He in NINJA for GPI.
If possible Neon should be available in case needed later in the run.

This run will extend and improve the detailed characterization of I-mode profiles and fluctuations, picking up where we left off on 1100817.

Particular goals are:

- To obtain core as well as edge Ti and Vtor, Vpol profiles, from CXRS and HIREX. We now have many more DNB pulses available, hope to get better statistics and to connect all 3 profiles/regions.
- To extend to higher Ip (1.2-1.3 MA) where we have obtained higher Tped, and thus expect (but have never measured) deeper Er wells.

Fluctuation diagnostics: GPI, reflectometry, PCI, magnetics should be configured for edge modes.

1: Start with 1.1 MA, 5.56 T shot, load from 1101208005 (which was itself loaded from 1100817013). Reduce power to 3 MW to avoid initial H-mode.

Repeat as needed for optimum CXRS and HIREX data. (5 shots?).
2. Raise Ip to 1.2 MA, and repeat. Attempt to raise ICRF power (watching for overheating...)

3. If physop comfortable and machine co-operates, repeat at 1.25 or 1.3 MA. May wish to raise target density.

4. End with a few shots at 0.8 MA. Is WCM as weak as on 1100813? Can we see it more clearly with He GPI? Note it seemed stronger on 1101208 at 1.1 MA.

Time permitting, take a few ohmic, lower B shots late in the day to enable cross-calibration of TS densities, which could be important to get good ne profiles; there are indications that at least one laser and perhaps both have drifted. Yungxing to provide a target shot.

This run overall was very successful, and we succeeded beyond expectations in the major goals:
1) Obtain core as well as edge Ti and Vtor, Vpol profiles, from CXRS and HIREX.
2) Extend to higher Ip (1.2-1.3 MA) where we have obtained higher Tped, and thus expect (but have never measured) deeper Er wells.

Thanks are due to all concerned - physop, RF operators, and many diagnostics folks. The only thing not accomplished, due to lack of time, was step 4 at lower Ip. But, we have previously obtained I-modes at 0.8 and 0.9 MA in similar shapes, on 1100817 and 1100910, in the same shape, which can be used for comparison.

There are many I-mode shots worthy of further analysis (** for particularly nice examples):

1.1 MA, q95 3.85:

002 3 MW IRCRF. Some early injections. Steady, no transitions.
003 3 MW ICRF. 2 injections, no H-mode.
004* 3 MW, no injection, very steady. H98 0.78
005* 3 MW. Early H-mode, then I-mode.
006 3 MW Early H-mode, then I. W sagging, perhaps too strong He puff.
007* 3 MW. Ramped ICRH avoids H-mode. W still erodes after NINJA. Used a smaller gap from here in to get a better GPI view of WCM. I-mode is relatively weak,
031* 3 MW. Reduced outer gap for better GPI coverage. A late L-I transition (only one today?), which should be interesting for turbulence comparisons.

1.2 MA, q95=3.5
010: 3 MW, steady I-mode. H98=0.7
011 3 MW steady, injections at 4 MW
012* Steady I-mode with 3.5 and 4 MW steps, H98 increasing to 0.9.
013* 4 MW steady I-mode, injections at 4.5 MW.
014 4.5 MW, I and H-mode phases. Good transition and thresold points.
018 4.5 MW + Neon. Early injections & RF trips, then steady I-mode.
Transitions to L-mode after an injection 1.25 s.
019 Similar, again an I-L transition.
021 I-mode, still some RF trips. H98 0.87
022 Less Neon, worse I-mode and H98
024** More neon, nice I-mode. H98 to 0.95, only slight decrease late.
026 ** Repeat, with He NINJA puff. No YAG; may need to combine w 24.

1.3 MA, q95=3.3
027* Steady I-mode, 4.5 MW RF, no H-mode. 195 kJ. H98 0.88, but decreases
028** 4.7 MW, steady I-mode, 1 early injection. 204 kJ, H98 0.9
029** 5.2 MW, I and H-mode phases. Good for threshold and transitions.
I-mode has 230 kJ (a record I think) H98 1.02 H-mode 238 kJ.

Speaking of records, we made 6.62 x1014 neutrons today,4th highest total ever on C-Mod. This ain't a low performance regime!
Just as importantly, we got good DNB and CXRS data on most shots. HIREX also should have good signal and calibration - we did a locked mode shot. Also did a TS calibration shot at the end of the day; as we suspected, TS ne profiles were low and need correcting.
Look forward to good Te, ne, Ti and Vtor profiles in core and edge. Will the diagnosics agree?

The machine ran well today, including many I-mode shots with good performance, covering 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 MA. Neon seeding also worked well, after some fiddling with pulse length and plenum pressure.

We had a significant number of I-mode shots today that had no H-mode transitions at all: 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 31.
24 and 26 were particularly nice from the point of view of ~steady conditions, with no RF trips during the full power phase.

We had a few high current disruptions, which were sometimes followed by fizzles. Going to slightly more negative EF4 bias at t=0 seemed to help.

At 1.3 MA, we were bumping up against the EF1L limit, and on shot 29, which had a brief h-mode and RF trips, we also hit the OH1 limit, probably causing the early rampdown disruption on that shot (at 1.1 MA). If revisiting these conditions, the OH1 -ve PLC limit should be increased, and flattop duration could be decreased. I also recommend increasing the neon at this current, density and power.

In I-mode, prior to the H-mode transition, shot 29 reached Wtot=230 kJ, and neutron rate of 2e14.

Redoing some of these shots soon after boronization should also be very interesting, to see the effects of reduced Mo and radiated power.

On shot 1, there was a hang in init, a no power cycle, and no data.

Scorecard:
plasmas 26
fizzles 5
no power 1

total cycles 32

Session Leader Comments
Dec 9 2010 09:12:36:380AM1101209001Amanda HubbardNo power. No gas. No data. No nothing.
Dec 9 2010 09:33:26:527AM1101209002Amanda HubbardNice I-mode, starting about 0.72 s. 1.1 MA, 5.65 T. Good DNB and CXRS. Did not get ETS, due to problems with shot 1 cycle.

Clear WCM on reflectometry 88 GHz.

Repeat, hopefully without the early impurity injections and with ETS.
Dec 9 2010 09:49:45:523AM1101209003Amanda HubbardAnother nice I-mode. Injection about 0.85 s. H98 is not as good as some days, about 0.75 Density actually decreases L to I mode, and during shot.

Next shot: Repeat but delay ICRF to 0.7 s to get a good L-mode CXRS at Ip 1.1 MA. Also will start puffing Helium for GPI, around 1 sec so we can see if it perturbs.
Dec 9 2010 10:05:30:597AM1101209004Amanda HubbardEven nicer I-mode. No injection. Density decreases a little, stays at nebar 1.56 e20. GPC2 Te9 is a good edge channel, is 620 eV. H98 0.78.

No helium. Repeat.
Dec 9 2010 10:21:10:013AM1101209005Amanda HubbardRepeat. Short I-mode, then H-mode followed by a long I-mode.

Unfortunately still no helium. One more try.
Dec 9 2010 10:38:01:843AM1101209006Amanda HubbardEarly injection and H-mode, then another steady 1.1 MA I-mode

Got the helium, around 1 sec, and nice GPI data. But only on innermost channels. Next shot, reduce He puff (since it was increasing ne and decreasing Te, neutrons).

Also ramp up ICRF to try to avoid the H-mode.
Dec 9 2010 10:56:50:510AM1101209007Amanda HubbardRamping up ICRF did avoid the injection and the H-mode. But, the I-mode and WCM are not as strong, Tedge, neutrons etc degrade gradually back to L-mode starting around 1.13 s. Is this due to the helium or the smaller gap??

Istvan does report nice WCM on GPI, quite far in radially (ie NOT near the separatrix which if true is very interesting).

Dec 9 2010 11:06:11:750AM1101209008Amanda HubbardLocked mode shot in aid of HIREX calibration. Success.

Next shot: Up in current to 1.2 MA. Start with same ne and RF power, though I will likely raise these later. NINJA Off.
Dec 9 2010 11:38:24:050AM1101209010Amanda HubbardGood shot: 1.2 MA, 5.65 T I-mode. Clear WCM, not our best performance (H98=0.7). RF is 3 MW, increase in steps next shot to see how much it can handle before H-mode.
Dec 9 2010 05:10:21:643PM1101209011Amanda HubbardGood I-mode in 3 MW phase. Some injections at 4 MW.
Dec 9 2010 12:09:27:610PM1101209012Amanda HubbardVery nice - clean I mode with 3.5 and 4 MW steps. H98 definitely increasing with power, up to 0.9 now.

Next: get greedy and ask for even more power. And allow NINJA (helium) around 1.1 s.
Dec 9 2010 12:26:29:110PM1101209013Amanda HubbardVery nice - clean I mode with 4 MW steps. But a big injection in the 4.5 MW step. GPI, reflectometry, magnetics see clear WCM.

H98 0.9 at up.

Next: 4.5 MW from the beginning; find out if it is W or J that limit us.

Dec 9 2010 12:37:23:067PM1101209014Amanda Hubbard4.5 MW from the beginning. Looks like we have found the upper limit - got I-mode but also two H-mode phases. No big injections, to my surprise.

Next: try increasing density during ICRF pulse to see if we can keep I-mode. If that doesn't work, next will try Neon seeding.

Dec 9 2010 12:43:58:520PM1101209015Amanda HubbardDisrupts 0.75 s, early in RF and before the programmed density change.
Dec 9 2010 01:12:22:947PM1101209016Amanda HubbardFizzle
Dec 9 2010 01:13:53:153PM1101209017Amanda Hubbard
Plasma. My idea of raising density in I-mode did not prevent the H-modes and injections -w hich seem to occur simultaneously at this power (still 4.4 MW).

Next: remove ne step and try some neon RF magic.
Dec 9 2010 01:36:14:420PM1101209018Amanda HubbardDecent plasma. Adding Neon does eliminate H-modes, still get a couple of ijections, early and late in RF pulse (at 4.5 MW RF). After the late injections, Te and stored energy remain low. Looks like L-mode on reflectometer, though GPI reports a low f mode.

Try moving neon earlier.
Dec 9 2010 01:52:02:707PM1101209019Amanda HubbardGood I-mode, with earlier Neon. But still drooping after 1 sec. (NINJA??)
And reverts to L-mode following a minor RF trip and injection at 1.18 s. Should have nice turbulence comparisons at least.

repeat without NINJA
Dec 9 2010 01:54:28:810PM1101209020Amanda HubbardDisrupts due to big injection early in ICRF.
Dec 9 2010 02:21:49:123PM1101209021Amanda HubbardDecent I-mode. Do not get much W, T 'droop' without the NINJA puff. 172 kJ, 4.3 MW, H98 0.88
Prad is rising, and we still get some trips. Neon likely not optimal.

Next shot: reduce puff.
Dec 9 2010 05:13:29:020PM1101209022Amanda HubbardLess Neon. I-mode, but performance seems a little worse. And RF is tripping. Apparently we guessed wrong.
Dec 9 2010 02:42:20:887PM1101209023Amanda HubbardFizzle
Dec 9 2010 03:03:31:663PM1101209024Amanda Hubbard
Very nice 1.2 MA I-mode!! 193 to 183 kJ, H98 about 0.95. And very steady, hardly any 'droop'. Only a couple small RF trips, in rampup.

Once more, with NINJA. Might as well get full dataset at this condition.
Cause it is going on viewgraphs...
Dec 9 2010 03:35:48:533PM1101209025Amanda HubbardFizzle
Dec 9 2010 03:40:16:663PM1101209026Amanda HubbardVery nice! Essentially a rerun of shot 24, with He puff for NINJA. 193 to 183 kJ. No RF trips or injections at all. 6 keV, H98 0.97.

Unfortunately YAG did not fire. But we should be able to combine 24 and 26 for analysis.

Next: Raise Ip.

Dec 9 2010 04:03:37:020PM1101209027Amanda HubbardFirst 1.3 MA - ran through well! I-mode, 195 kJ, slight droop.Steady nel 1.2e20.
Neutral Ti , like Te0, is 6 keV!

Prad similar to 24 and 26.
Dec 9 2010 04:30:20:647PM1101209028Amanda Hubbard1.3 MA, 4.8 MW ICRF. 209 kJ! (is this an I-mode record?). Slight droop, but pretty steady.

Dec 9 2010 04:33:16:207PM1101209029Amanda HubbardRF to 5.4 MW. This one had H-mode transition.

But W=229 kJ in I-mode (surely a record) and 239 in H-mode (RF tripping).
Think we've found the max at this Ip. And should have good data.

Next, go back to lower Ip (shot 7, 1.1 MA) and reduce the gap.

Dec 9 2010 04:34:04:180PM1101209030Amanda HubbardFizzle.

Dec 9 2010 05:07:41:580PM1101209031Amanda HubbardBack to 1.1 MA, 3 MW, with small inner gap for better GPI, magnetics data. We got a late L to I transition (1.13 s), which should be rather nice for GPI (and was unusual today, most shots went straight to I-mode).
Dec 9 2010 05:05:37:460PM1101209032Amanda Hubbard
Last shot was completely different: Ohmic, low B high density shot to check TS density calibrations. It ran OK, we got at least some ECE cutoffs.

GPC2 was set to 1.85 mm grating, 5 degrees, GPC to 12.75 degrees.
