MP624: Measurements of mode converted waves in D-He3 plasmas with phase contrast imaging Bt: 8.0 T Ip: 1.0 MA nl04 ~ 0.8e20-1.0e20 m^-2 He3 puff Working Gas Species: D2 Boronization Requested: No Standard ECDC Overnight Diagnostics: Standard profile measurements, PCI, ECE (8 T) -- The goal is to get mode conversion measurements at low He3 fraction using D and E antennas. We will start from low power to minimize the effect of energetic minority tail. Hopefully, this will give us more reliable measurements than what we get from J antenna, which is 144 degrees away from PCI. Power scan will be done as time permits. -- 1. Start from shot 1100210007 (8 T, 1.0 MA, nl04 = 0.8, USN), 150 ms He3 puff, 0.5 MW ICRF. Adjust He3 puff in the subsequent shots if necessary. RF for 0.75-1.20 s one at a time. Focus on D and E antenna measurements, and take some with J. 2. Power scan Increase RF power to 1.0 and 1.5 MW. |

Changes: use gas prefill settings from 1101216 (non-cryo) startup. Load seg 2 from seg 2 of 1100210007. Changes: add 150 ms He3 puff. Stop TF ramp at 6.0 T (167 kA) for first shot to make sure TF diagnostics are working properly. Increase TF ramp to 225 kA if all goes well after first shot. Set Ip to 1.0 MA. Use TF timing from 1100811019 (0.5 s flattop). Alternator RPM will have to be increased to ~1715. PLC limits on TF will have to be increase to allow 225 kA for 8 T operation. |

| Overall a successfull run. It took some time to optimize the He3 fraction for good MC layer location and large signal. With 80 ms puff, He3 fraction was around 0.09-0.11, and this was about the optimum for E antenna. The signal from E antenna was higher than J in general, which is what is expected qualitatively. Quantitatively, the observed signal level for E was still low compared to simulations. We tried to modify D antenna frequency to 78 MHz, and finally got it running at the 3rd last shot. The difference between J and D was not immediately obvious. This may partly be due to lower coupling of D antenna power to the core, as indicated by the trips of the antenna. |

| Run summary from 1101217
Physics Operator: G. Wallace Session Leader: N. Tsuji MP624: Measurements of mode converted waves in D-He3 plasmas with PCI This was an 8.0 T run to look at D-He3 mode conversion with PCI at 80 MHz. C-Mod was running well all day with only two fizzles. Increasing puffing on PG4 and PG3 stopped the fizzles. TF values of 7.9 T (224 kA) and 8.0 T (227 kA) were successfully achieved, although many cell accesses were required to inspect and replace blown fuses. Shot cycles were taking about 25 min to complete due to the extended cooling time at these TF current values. Only 18 shot cycles were obtained. A He3 puff of ~80 ms was required to achieve the desired mode conversion. Some problems were encountered with disruptions during the rampdown due to vertical instability. This was fixed by starting the ramp down of CLEARIN and RCUR a little earlier. Much effort was made by the RF group to retune their transmitters for slighly lower frequency. At 8.0 T the mode conversion layer was slightly on the high field side of the PCI viewing chords for 80.5 MHz. Decreasing the frequency by a few MHz helped to see the mode conversion better. Scorecard: Shot cycles: 18 Fizzles: 2 Duds: 0 Plasmas disrupted in rampdown: 6 Plasmas with complete rampdown: 10 |

| Dec 17 2010 10:52:43:973AM | 1101217002 | Naoto Tsujii | J, 0.5 MW. He3 fraction ~0.11. Signal is very low, but may be expected for J. |
| Dec 17 2010 10:53:04:687AM | 1101217003 | Naoto Tsujii | J, 1.0 MW. He3 fraction >0.13. A bit high. |
| Dec 17 2010 10:52:10:240AM | 1101217004 | Naoto Tsujii | Still He3 ~0.10. Try changing D antenna frequency. |
| Dec 17 2010 01:12:29:217PM | 1101217006 | Naoto Tsujii | 50 ms He3. No signal. Probably only minority heating. |
| Dec 17 2010 01:13:58:643PM | 1101217007 | Naoto Tsujii | 100 ms He3 puff, He3 frac ~0.10. E at 0.5 MW, signal ok. |
| Dec 17 2010 01:19:00:413PM | 1101217008 | Naoto Tsujii | 100 ms He3 puff, He3 frac ~0.10. |
| Dec 17 2010 01:20:02:947PM | 1101217009 | Naoto Tsujii | 80 ms He3 puff, He3 frac ~0.09(?). Mode conversion is much smaller compared to shot 7 (He3 frac ~0.10). |
| Dec 17 2010 01:28:07:680PM | 1101217010 | Naoto Tsujii | 100 ms He3 puff, He3 frac >~0.10. Mode conversion appreciably larger compared shot 7. |
| Dec 21 2010 11:08:55:097AM | 1101217011 | Naoto Tsujii | 100 ms He3 puff, He3 frac >~0.11. Signal seems larger, but He3 fraction might be somewhat higher. |
| Dec 17 2010 02:22:03:483PM | 1101217012 | Naoto Tsujii | 90 ms He3 puff, He3 frac >0.11. Signal level seems close to what is expected, but considering sensitivity to the He3 fraction, and uncertainty of it, it's hard to be conclusive. |
| Dec 17 2010 03:21:40:303PM | 1101217013 | Naoto Tsujii | 60 ms He3 frac ~0.09. Signal is comparable to shot 7. |
| Dec 17 2010 03:25:43:267PM | 1101217014 | Naoto Tsujii | 80 ms He3, frac ~0.09. Both MC location and signal level around the optimum for E antenna. Signal from J is 10 times smaller, which is consistent with the previous measurements. |
| Dec 21 2010 11:30:23:307AM | 1101217015 | Naoto Tsujii | E, J at 1.0 MW. Signals slightly more than twice the privous 0.5 MW shots. |
| Dec 17 2010 04:18:39:233PM | 1101217016 | Naoto Tsujii | Finally got D at 0.3 MW. Signal per MW larger than J, comparable to E. |
| Dec 17 2010 06:34:16:427PM | 1101217017 | Naoto Tsujii | He3 frac ~0.11. D and J at the same power level. Although D did not run steadily, signal from D is about twice as high as J. |
| Dec 17 2010 06:37:39:230PM | 1101217018 | Naoto Tsujii | He3 frac ~0.11. Longer D and J pulse. It is hard to see the difference for this shot. |
