| Run Plan MP574 ITER-like discharges with low Bt
The goal is to reach, simultaneously, q95 = 3, betaN = 1.7, n/nGr = 0.85, elongation = 1.85, H98 = 1.0 for the flattop phase in order to approximate ITER-like discharges. Need to access EDA H-modes. SEE PO PLAN for approach to first several shots Reference shot is 1100121036 Ip = 600 kA Bt = 2.7 T 350 ms Ip rampup time ICRF on at 350 ms, 2.5 MW, off at 1.5 s Early divert, ~ 100 ms nl04 at end of rampup, ~ 7e19 /m2 1) Obtain ohmic reference case, 036 without ICRF power 2) correct elongation from damaged divertor operation 2010 to get ~1.8-1.85, get q95 to ~ 3 and steady for flattop, remove slow Ip ramp from 400-750 ms if possible 3) obtain EDA H-modes in flattop a. inject lower powers with same density (nl04=7e19 at end of ramp), 2.0 MW, 1.5 MW, 1.0 MW, 0.5 MW b. raise density at end of ramp and repeat power scan, nl04 = 9e19, 1.1e19, 1.3e19, 1.5e19 c. Identify powers and densities required to access EDA H-mode in flattop 4) control EDA H-mode onset and parameters a. examine initial high power ICRF at end of ramp or in late ramp phase with step down to go into H-mode, but recover EDA 5) Increase flattop density to the target range n/nGr = 0.65, 0.75, 0.85 for flattop EDA H-mode 6) Raise betaN by injecting higher powers a. Use neon injection with ICRF, benefits may be higher power coupling and higher power EDA H-modes 7) Add ICRF in rampup, 1 MW, then 1-2 MW in L-mode, coupled to flattop ICRF induced EDA H-mode NOTE: n/nGr = 0.85 in ITER corresponds to about 3.3-3.7 x 10^20 /m3 (or nl04 ~ 2e20) in C-Mod NOTE: end of rampup in ITER is n/nGr = 0.3-0.35, corresponding to 1.0 x 10^20 /m3 (or nl04 ~ 5.8e19) in C-Mod |

| MP574 Low Bt ITER-like discharges
started with 5.4 T discharge at 0.8 MA to get discharges going after break and boronization, multiple cell access to get systems up.... 2.7 T and good long Ip pulse by 007, ohmic, 600 kA, elongation a bit low, betaN = 0.45 008 begin ICRF, using low starting power and ramping thru flattop 009 begin pushing up kappa, H-modes starting near end of Ip ramp, 1.5 MW of ICRF 011 pulse thru beginning of rampdown, ICRF starts around 1 MW and ramping to 2 MW at EOF, nice low rdiation, EDA H-mode late in flattop 012 similar to 011, kappa getting higher and so is q95 013 kappa up to 1.75, Ip up to 650 kA, discharge all the way thru rampdown, H-mode starts at 850 ms and lasts to 1.5 s, low radiated power....n/nGr = 0.75, betaN = 1.4 014 tried burst of ICRF to induce H-mode, with back-off to get an EDA, got H-mode but it had high radiation, and crashed....trying to move H-mode onset closer to end of Ip ramp 017, 018, 019, 020 same ICRF waveforms, removed the slow Ip ramp from 600-650 kA to try and get H-mode earlier, it worked for one shot and then it didn't, betaN's are around 1.3-1.5 during H-mode, q95 = 3-3.2, n/nGr = 0.7ish 022 023 tried neon, but appeared to enhance any radition we had before...probably becasue we did not raise the ICRF power, mostly bad stuff 024 neon-off from here on, H-mode starts 750 ms, high radiation phase, betaN = 1.5 025 ramp ICRF power to 3 MW during flattop...SUPER earlier H-mode, long from 550-1500ms, radiation stays under control, betaN up to 1.8....OOPS no Thomsen 026 tried ramping up to 4 MW, similar to 025, but then get ELM-free and a disruption at 1.38s, radiation more spikes, transient betaN's up to 1.9 027, 028 similar to 027 029 back to ICRF to 3 MW at end of flattop, discharge thru rampdown, a peak in radiated power, otherwise betan up to 1.8 030 031 retrying 029, still phases of peak radiation, but they recover 033 start low ICRF power in rampup, 0.5 MW, then back to ramping to 3 MW in flattop....oh no, lots of H-modes, looks like ICRF is coming on too strong after end of Ip rampup 034 035 036 attempting to weaken ICRF power early in flattop, getting back to better H-modes, betan"s of 1.7, n/nGr = 0.7-0.75, q95 of 3-3.2, H98's are even close to 1....good day Overall the run day was successful on all counts, betaN reached its value, H98 pretty close once we injected up to 3ish MW, kappa is low but q95 is close. n/nGr is the hardest of all parameters, but we were high at 0.7-0.75. In many discharges the Tped is > 500 eV at 650 kA early in H-mode when density is lower, and then drops to 300 eV by the highest density...ave betaN stays steady. The ramping ICRF seemed to help us get in EDA (or at least more steady) H-modes and stay in for up to 1 s. Interesting MHD showing up..maybe this will help the hybrid?? Thanks to Ian, Steve Wolfe, Steve Wukitch and Yijun, super run day. |

Overview -------- A remarkably successful day getting sustained H-modes at 2.7T 0.65MA q=3. Record beta_N>1.9 (EFIT) achieved. One-second-long H-modes. A number of trophy shots. Lessons Learned --------------- Good results for impurity control in H-mode were achieved today only in H-modes that started after 0.6s. Those that started earlier had immediate impurity accumulation, from which they rarely recovered even after several back-transitions. Lesson 1: don't try to get H-mode too early. One way to try to prevent early transitions is to shift out the rxl slightly to avoid slot divertor configuration. But the significance of this control is less certain. Why is this?? Some speculations: 1. Maybe one needs to wait till the impurities stirred up at the start have been pumped out. Certainly the ratiomatic pressure is much higher at the time of too-early H-modes than at later. A worry about that is that the ratiomatic pressure returns immediately the RF turns off. I suspect there might be an instrumental effect. 2. Maybe one needs to wait till the orientation of the divertor fan has begun to move to more horizontal because of the gradual swing of the OH flux. Good results were achieved using very gentle ICRF ramps up in power to about 3MW. This seemed to enable reasonable impurity control. There were ELM events for periods of the ramp duration, which might well be type III. There was no evidence that Ne puff helped. In fact it seemed to be very much the opposite. It enhanced the radiation and impurity accumulation. Startup was extremely robust at 3T. It does not seem to be a problem that the main current rise is delayed as long as till 15ms. Getting rid of runaways is probably best accomplished by enhancing the pre-zero PG3 gas puff. Adequate Hirex signal could not be obtained with an H-bottom puff of 20 for 28ms at 2psi. This substantially exceeds what was used on the comparable shot from 1215. It is hypothesized that the Te is too low to get decent signal. Sustained kappa=1.75 was obtained. But that's close to an unstable level. I wouldn't want to be compelled to go much higher.
