Purpose
MP#477 Formation of Ohmic H-Mode ITB with Improved Diagnostic Set
The purpose of this experiment is to study the conditions which lead to the
spontaneous formation of Ohmic H-mode ITBs with an extended diagnostic set.

Shot plan
Set up the Ohmic H-mode target shots with an ITB using a field ramp which
starts at 5.4 T, decreases to 3.2 T, then increases to 4.6 T. Confirm that an ITB
forms. Reference shot is 1070628017

Use caution on the Argon initially until an ITB is established. (20 ms to start?)

Establish an ITB. We may need to adjust the strike point on the divertor to achieve this. Then proceed to acquire profile data on reproducible shots.

____________________

We obtained an ITB on the first shot with our target discharge, but with no argon pulse. Throughout the rest of the run, we were very judicious with application of argon, and it seemed to enhance our success rate of achieving ITBS. Initially we had some problems with camac and CPCI for several diagnostics, but we had everything working in concert by the last 3 or 4 shots.

The best ITBs of the day were on shots 1110105006 and 11101050015. Other shots with ITBs wer 1110105002, 04, 05, 06, 07, 09, 12, and 17.
_____________
1110105001

We got an ITB on the first shot. Unfortunately, we did not get Thomson data, or the trigger on the beam diagnostics, and we have not yet put in argon for HIREX.

Thomson will be ready on the next shot, but we're still checking on the beam trigger. There appears to be a camac server problem.

We'll try for a repeat after we diagnose the beam problem.

1110105002 ITB, but early back transition. We got Thomson and beam data on this one, so we'll add 75 ms of Argon for the next one.

1110105003 No ITB. Try without the argon.

1110105004 Two ITBs. Try a shorter argon pulse. 30 ms.

1110105005 One weak ITB and an EN mode. Argon was at 30 ms. We'll try to see if the valve will open at 15 ms.

1110105006 Beautiful ITB. Missing MSE for this shot. We'll try to repeat the shot.

1110105007 Two short ITBs with back transitions. Hirex wants more argon, so we'll put 20 ms in. Still having problems with MSE CPCI.

1110105008 Short lived ITB. Density rise stops with onset of large MHD activity on the soft x-rays. We're still debugging MSE problems.

1110105009 Two ITBs. This was at a higher target density of 0.8. We'll try 0.9. There is still quite a bit of MHD activity on the soft x-rays. We're still debugging MSE problems.

1110105010 No H-mode. No ITB.

1110105011 Disrupts before H-mode onset. MSE appears to be working now, so we're returning to the initial target plasma.

1110105012 Good ITB, with peaking that persists through the first back transition. Some of the MSE channels saturated, so we are going to try to repeat.

1110105013 Multiple H-modes and back transitions. No true ITB, but 2 EN modes. Repeat.

1110105014 Similar to shot 13. Multiple H-modes and back transitions. No true ITB, but 3 EN modes. When in doubt, turn off the argon and try again.

1110105015 Two good ITBs. Probabaly the best shot of the day. Looks like good data from all required diagnostics. We'll try one more with a little bit of argon back in.

1110105016 The shot looks promising, but the ITB is not established before the back transition. The density is peaked afterwards, but is not in H-mode.

1110105017 The H-mode has several back transitions, but the density remains very peaked from 1 to 1.2 s indicating an ITB.

good start on MP 632
After starting with a locked mode shot for velocity calibration on shot 18,
there was a total of 9 shots with reversals. Reversals at 3 currents, 0.75,
1.05 and 0.5 MA were achieved at 5.0 T. At 7.0 T, reversals were observed
at 1.05 and 0.7 MA. The density at reversal increases linearly with Ip,
but the magnetic field dependence is much weaker than 1/q. Good signal levels
with Hirex-Sr will allow for detailed reversal profiles.

The machine ran extremely well today, and both MP's got
good results.

The morning experiment concentrated on mostly one discharge
program with minor variations. The point was to assemble as
complete a documentation dataset as possible using all available
diagnostics. Using the reference shot from 2007 (with predictors
recalculated for changes to the magnetics), we readily obtained
ohmic EDA H-modes and ITB's from the first shot. The main issue
was that adding argon killed off the ITB even with very small
puffs. We managed to get a series of shots with adequate argon for
HIREX profile analysis using a puff width of 20msec. The minimum
to open the valve (B-side lower) may be 15msec, based on decreasing
levels of argon in the discharge after a series of shots at this level.
Residual argon with no puff after some puffed cases was sufficient to
analyze, and tended to produce some of the best ITB's. We did a small
density scan to probe the limits of the density range over which ITB's
formed. See the SL_SUMMARY for more details. There was an issue with
triggering of the DNB diagnostics on shot#1, and continuing difficulties
with the MSE DT216, which Josh finally fixed in time for us to get some
good data from this diagnostic as well. Essentially all of the ITB shots
disrupted in flattop or early rampdown, probably due to radiation issues
associated with the ITB, but there were no deleterious effects on subsequent
discharges.

The changeover to John's experiment went smoothly at ~13:00, with
the cryopump turned on for shot#18. The only change to startup
was increasing the PG4 puff from 25 to 50msec. Later in the day
the puff was increased again to 55msec, and minor changes to the initial
pg3 peak (90 to 100V), and the EF4 current (5amps) were made toward the
end of the day. Startup was pretty reliable, with only a couple of bouncy
starts. There was one dud due to failure of the Piezo HV enable
to come on in PULSE on shot#23. We completed the 5T part of MP#632,
including one locked mode calibration shot and density ramps at
.75, 1.05, and 0.5MA current. The first 1.05MA shot disrupted in
rampup due to a random injection, all the rest went through at least
into rampdown, most to full length. We then jumped to the 7.0T cases,
and got good reversals at 1.05MA and 0.7MA. The reversal density appeared
to be a function of current but not Bt. See John's SL_SUMMARY for more
results.

The main physop issue of the afternoon run was control of the density ramps
at low density with the cryopump operating. Best results were obtained with
P=5, D=6, and I=0 for downward ramps or I=1 for upward ramps. While this
setup gave fairly linear response without oscillation after diversion, it was
nevertheless necessary to program targets a little beyond the actual desired
values.

There were a few data system glitches. In addition to the DNB trigger
problem and the MSE digitizer issue, which was found to be due to data
being stored in the model, there was some kind of problem with
SPECTROSCOPY::TOP.VUV:RETICON which caused storage problems for GPC and
the Tantential Z-meter. Josh turned this action off in the tree on
shot #18. Somebody should investigate this and get it fixed before
the data from this system is needed again (John didn't need it).

Power systems ran perfectly, as did the cryopump.

Jan 5 2011 12:53:58:590PM1110105016Catherine FioreThe shot looks promising, but the ITB is not established before the back transition. The density is peaked afterwards, but is not in H-mode.
Jan 5 2011 02:55:21:663PM1110105017Catherine FioreThe H-mode has several back transitions, but the density remains very peaked from 1 to 1.2 s indicating an ITB.

Jan 5 2011 09:07:14:240AM1110105001Steve Wolfe
shot#1: plasma to 1.2sec, sort of like the reference shot.
L-H transition at .8sec, density rises until H-L at 1.08
ECE cutoff after 1.05 sec or so,
Startup looks ok, rising pressure after breakdown

No YAG data. This is getting annoying.

Next shot: repeat with Thomson, we hope. Also, CXRS needs a trigger
may be an issue with DNB tree?
Argon for Hirex soon, but not yet.

Jan 5 2011 09:33:34:803AM1110105002Steve Wolfe
shot#2: Repeat after delay for DNB data acq issue
plasma, similar to #1, lasts to 1.36sec, glitch in
current rise at .12, H-L at 1.1sec
Got Thomson data, we seem to have DNB/CXRS data

Next: argon on at 75msec at .3sec, 100%

Jan 5 2011 09:43:06:883AM1110105003Steve Wolfe
shot#3: Repeat with argon on at 75msec at .3sec, 100% (B-side lower)

plasma into rampdown 1.6sec, no ITB, a few short H-modes.
Now can I blame the Argon?

Next: Turn off argon again.

Jan 5 2011 10:03:20:350AM1110105004Steve Wolfe
shot#4: Turn off argon again. No other changes.
plasma to 1.4sec, two H-modes, both with ITB's
injection around .3sec does not seem to cause a problem
Still enough argon around to make hirex measurements
level in L-mode is 10-20% of that on #3.

Next: argon back on, 30msec this time

Jan 5 2011 10:09:44:893AM1110105005Steve Wolfe
shot#5: argon back on, 30msec this time, still using 100%
plasma to 1.7sec, three H-modes, weak if any ITB?

Next: argon down to 15msec puff (you thought I was kidding
about homeopathic dosage?)

Jan 5 2011 10:30:36:420AM1110105006Steve Wolfe
shot#6: argon down to 15msec puff
plasma disrupted at 1.1sec during an ITB
two h-modes, first starts at .64sec earlier than previous shots.
SL likes the ITB, see if we have all the data we need.
Still didn't get MSE trigger, should be fixed for next shot

Next: repeat

Jan 5 2011 10:40:06:653AM1110105007Steve Wolfe
shot#7: repeat
plasma to 1.25sec, several injections,
h-mode back to 0.8, H-L at 1sec, then another L-H
ITB not so good, MHD visible on xrays after 1sec
Hirex reports decreasing argon level, 15msec may be too narrow
Still having cpci problems with MSE, but may be fixed this time.

Next: raise argon to 20msec

Jan 5 2011 11:03:26:143AM1110105008Steve Wolfe
shot#8: raise argon to 20msec, we'll see if it opens there.
There is still an issue with MSE cpci setting,

plasma to 1.25, first h-mode lasts longer,
HIREX signals up, should be useable.
Big MHD seen on xray, ECE, foil bolometers(!)
Cell access for polarimeter

Next: Fiddle with target density, still not hearing from JAS

Jan 5 2011 11:12:19:923AM1110105009Steve Wolfe
shot#9: Raise nl04 from 7 to 8e19
plasma to 1.35sec, 2 hmodes, possibly 2 ITB's

Next: raise nl04 from 8 to 9e19

Jan 5 2011 11:25:15:383AM1110105010Steve Wolfe
shot#10: raise nl04 from 8 to 9e19
Josh is still looking into the MSE non-trigger issue
plasma to 1.7sec, no hmode

Next: drop nl04 to 6e19

Jan 5 2011 11:39:14:650AM1110105011Steve Wolfe
shot#11:drop nl04 to from 9 to 6e19
Josh claims MSE should be fixed now.

Early disruption, .75sec, looks like an injection
could be a vertical problem, EFC current thrashes maybe before TQ

Next: back to 0.7e19 on nl04

Jan 5 2011 11:56:17:190AM1110105012Steve Wolfe
shot#12: back to 0.7e19 on nl04 to pick up MSE for the base case
plasma to 1.3sec, 2 h-modes, ITB's; to the untutored eye, these look
weaker than the earlier shots at this density.
MSE has data, but many channels saturated; need to repeat

Next: repeat

Jan 5 2011 12:05:34:637PM1110105013Steve Wolfe
shot#13: repeat
plasma to 1.7sec, first h-mode at .73sec
killed by injection at .87, followed by a couple more.
Not sure about ITB, but it doesn't look good. No ECE cut-offs.

Next: repeat

Jan 5 2011 12:17:15:957PM1110105014Steve Wolfe
shot#14: repeat again
plasma to 1.6sec, multiple Hmodes, questionable ITB

Next: argon off

Jan 5 2011 12:36:54:040PM1110105015Steve Wolfe
shot#15: repeat again, with argon puff off
plasma to 1.45sec, ITB seems somewhat better.
Cutting off the argon helps, but the signal is down on HIREX
MSE data ok

Next: turn argon back on at 20msec

Jan 5 2011 12:52:16:940PM1110105016Steve Wolfe
shot#16: turn argon back on, 20msec puff
plasma to 1.2sec, got an ITB again
DAQ error on GPC data
Also the tangential zmeter

Next: repeat, without argon

Jan 5 2011 01:08:07:113PM1110105017Steve Wolfe
shot#17: repeat, without argon
plasma to 1.3sec, first H-L at 1sec, not so good ITB on first H-mode
GPC store action failed again, Josh has been contacted
Also Zmeter_F_TAN again

Last shot of MP#477.
Next: Begin afternoon experiment with Locked Mode Cal shot
Cryopump on

Jan 5 2011 01:20:13:897PM1110105018Steve Wolfe
shot#18: Begin afternoon experimentMP#632 with Locked Mode Cal shot
Cryopump on
Seg2 off, Seg 4 on
Increase Seg1 PG4 from 25 to 50msec

plasma 1.6sec, I think there's a locked mode at 0.65sec, harder to
tell with GPC at wrong field setting. Trash on nl04 after 1.2sec
GPC and zmeter data are back, notified Matt about reticon

Startup ok, breakdown a little late

Next: Move on to John's first shot (seg3)

Jan 5 2011 01:33:05:090PM1110105019Steve Wolfe
shot#19: Move on to John's first shot (seg3)
Seg4 off, seg3 on
Change argon puff from 100msec to 200msec
This is supposed to be 5.0T, 750kA, rising density from 3 to 5.25e19;
Not sure it will do that low after the ITB's and disruptions this morning

plasma to 1.7sec, nl04 ramps from 1.8e19 to 4e19, but it looks like there
may be a locked mode for the whole shot. Lots of runways/slideaway after
.6sec or so.

Next: raise starting NL04, also muck with NL04 gains

Jan 5 2011 01:47:11:243PM1110105020Steve Wolfe
shot#20: Tweak factor on nl04 in seg3, to pick up current calibration
raise starting NL04 from 3 to 4e19 (0.5sec),
endpoint from 5.25 to 6e19
also reduce early P gain from 9 to 6, leave D at 6,
add I gain=1 after 0.5sec

plasma full length, density ramp more or less as requested,
small oscilation between 0.5 and 1sec, no locked mode
Got the reversal

Next: ramp down from nebar=0.9 to 0.7e20

Jan 5 2011 02:06:08:927PM1110105021Steve Wolfe
shot#21: ramp down from nebar=0.9 to 0.7e20
NL04 ramp from 6e19 to 4.2e19
Decrease NL04 P gain to 5 for whole shot, D=6, I=1

plasma, full length, small bounce on startup,
density ramp more or less as requested
No reversal, SL thinks too low density

Next: raise pg4 to 55msec, raise starting point of downsweep
by 10%

Jan 5 2011 02:17:36:133PM1110105022Steve Wolfe
shot#22: raise pg4 to 55msec, raise starting point of downsweep
from 6.0 to 6.6e19 nl04, raise point at 0.2sec to 6e19 to keep a little
gas coming in before 0.4sec; also raise endpoint from 4.2 top 4.6e19

plasma full length, density didn't fall much if at all?
No bounce this time. Still not high enough density.

Next: Increase the programmed starting point to 7.5e19 at 0.5sec
Remove I gain

Jan 5 2011 02:30:54:897PM1110105023Steve Wolfe
shot#23:Increase the programmed starting point to nl04=7.5e19 at 0.5sec
Remove I gain

Dud. No gas puff, HV enable failed to come on in Pulse

Next: try again

Jan 5 2011 02:42:32:697PM1110105024Steve Wolfe
shot#24:Increase the programmed starting point to nl04=7.5e19 at 0.5sec
Remove I gain
Plasma full length, late-ish breakdown
density ramp from 5.6e19 to 3.5e19
got the reversal

Next: 1.05MA, nebar ramp from .8 to 1.2e20

Jan 5 2011 03:03:13:793PM1110105025Steve Wolfe
shot#25: Ip to 1.05MA, NL04 ramp from .5 to .75e20
Early disruption, .24sec, injection? goes resistive after 0.2sec
Not obvious why.

Next: drop nl04 demand at .2 from 5 to 4.5e19

Jan 5 2011 03:12:36:583PM1110105026Steve Wolfe
shot#26: Ip to 1.05MA, NL04 ramp from .5 to .75e20
drop nl04 demand at .2 from 5 to 4.5e19 relative to 25 (why not?)

plasma full length, Big density drop at .4sec, need more puff
No locked mode, surprisingly enough. Possible reversal very late

Next: Put back some integral gain,
raise the early demand, raise target throughout

Jan 5 2011 03:25:39:723PM1110105027Steve Wolfe
shot#27: Raise demand to 5.5 ramping to 8.5e19, I=1
plasma full length, nl04 ramp from 4.7 to 7.7e19

Next; skip the down ramp, go on to 0.5MA case

Jan 5 2011 03:43:01:153PM1110105028Steve Wolfe
shot#28: go on to 0.5MA case, ramp down instead of up
Ip to 0.5MA, Nl04 ramp from 4e19 down to 0.5e19

plasma full length, nl04 from 3e19 to 2e19, gas off after .65sec
SL says this is "confusing". Wants to start from a higher point

Next: raise initial NL04 to 4.5e19

Jan 5 2011 03:57:09:103PM1110105029Steve Wolfe
shot#29: raise initial NL04 to from 4 to 4.5e19, same endpoint
Set Nl04 I=0
plasma full length, ferocious slideaway after 1.2sec
breakdown creeping later.
Nl04=3.3e19 down to 1.8e19

Next: 7Tesla, 1.05MA, nebar from .5 to 0.9e20

Jan 5 2011 04:15:07:877PM1110105030Steve Wolfe
shot#30: TF_Current from 139 to 194 in seg3
Ip from .5 to 1.05MA
Nl04 ramp from 4 to 6e19, point at .2sec to 4.5e19, set Nl04 I=1
IC_EF4U in seg1 from -1290 to -1300

plasma full length, bouncy startup, lots of runaways.
Density ramp more or less as requested, 2.5 to 5.7e19
field is only 6.9T

Next: Raise density ~20%, raise TF to 198kA, tweak startup

Jan 5 2011 04:38:29:203PM1110105031Steve Wolfe
shot#31: TF_Current from 194 to 198kA
Nl04 ramp from 5e19 to 7.5e19
IC_EF4U in seg1 from -1300 to -1295
PG3 in seg1 from 90 to 100at -.019sec
Shot cycle to 20minutes

plasma full length, no bounce, no runaways
density went up as planned, Bt=7.0T
Got the reversal.

Next: repeat the 7T case, 16 or 17minute cycle time

Jan 5 2011 04:53:03:567PM1110105032Steve Wolfe
shot#32: repeat the 7T case, then try for LM calibration on last shot
No PCS changes

plasma full length, no bounce no runaways
density trace looks the same.

Next: Try a lower current case 700kA

Jan 5 2011 05:12:10:860PM1110105033Steve Wolfe
shot#33: SL wants more data points, so don't do the second lm calibration
Go to 700kA
Drop initial NL04 from 5 to 3e19 at .5sec,
leaving .2sec point at 5e19, end point still at 7.5e19
No change to startup

plasma full length, marfing along, no bounce no runaways
Density is ramping, but not smooth. looks like we got a couple
of injections. SL says there was a reversal, so we got another
data point out of it.

End of Run
