| SL summary for 1110107
MP636, "Study of ELMy H-mode: Toroidal field scan" SL: J. Hughes, P. Snyder PO: J. Irby The goal of this run was to extend the data set in ELMy H-mode up to 8T, providing a new set of conditions under which to test the EPED model for the pedestal height. Relatively early on we demonstrated that we could access ELMy H-modes with high Te pedestals with D(He3) heating at 8T. However, progress on the run plan after that was stymied by a number of operational difficulties. Therefore this piece of the ELMy H-mode study remains open. Shots to look at more carefully for ELMs: 008, 009, 023, 024, 030. Also, I-mode was seen on 021. Details: We began the run by recovering from an overnight boronization at 5.4T, establishing a good target discharge in the JFT-2M shape. By shot 006 we had a suitable kappa=1.45 target with acceptable ICRF performance, although the discharge density was still too high from excess wall fueling. We proceeded to move on to 8T shots, despite the lack of ELMs. After a disruption on shot 7, the natural density was significantly reduced, and we obtained a good ELMy H-mode on shot 8, albeit late in the dicharge. We began to try and improve upon this discharge by changing ICRF and density programming, as well as tweaking the shape. We suffered a long delay due to a OH1 power supply failure on shot 11, which took over an hour to resolve. This was followed by an early EF1U commutation on 017 (this happened again on 026). On shot 018 we picked up where we left off at shot 010, and immediately caused a nasty injection from the divertor. This prompted me to try some Ne seeding to ameliorate the heat loads there. Unfortunately, the divertor seemed to be pretty mucked up at that point, as we started to get Mo injections and disruptions prior to 0.5s. After some tweaking we started to get back on track with shot 021, on which we observed a fairly clear I-mode prior to triggering H-mode. Shot 022 was a dithering H-mode. We concluded we needed more source power as long as we were seeding, and we raised ICRF demand starting with shot 023. There were ELMs during the initial H-mode evolution on both 023 and 024. The valve on H-bottom got stuck open during shot 024, which resulted in a vessel full of Ne. We moved the Ne to B-side-lower after that and proceeded from there with less than 2 hours remaining in the run. Shot 028 had too little Ne, 029 perhaps too much. The final shot, 030, successfully yielded some short ELMy periods. |

| The run started off well with the production of nice plasmas at 5.4 T
following the overnight boronization. The first shot at 8T, shot 7, disrupted at 1.35 s. After making sure the rampdown started at 1.2 s for all the primary controllers, shot 8 ramped down fully. Startup was very good today as long as the hardware functioned (EF1, OH1). Problems -------- Had to replace several TF fuses (first one on shot 10) shots 11 to 16: OH1 would not run --- reset of control cabinet fixed the problem shot 17 --- ef1 problem, dud shots 18 to 21: early density too low resulting in several early disruptions. Reload of shot 10 and increased density request fixed problem on shot 21. shot 24: h-bottom piezo stayed open for entire shot and continued to leak following the discharge shot 25: high radiation levels w/o neon shot 26: tried h-bottom again, but leak rate too high, fizzle shot 27: ef1 problem again, dud Score ----- tests 12,13,14,15,16 (OH1 issues) duds 11,17,27 (EF1 issues) fizzles 26 (neon leak) plasma 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10 18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,28,29, 30 |

| Jan 7 2011 08:19:37:693AM | 1110107001 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 1:
Attempt: Reproduce ELMy H-mode from 1101214029 Result: EDA H-mode. Starting density is too high. Looking for nebar before L-H of 1.2--1.3e20, rather than 1.5e30 |
| Jan 7 2011 08:28:34:800AM | 1110107002 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 2:
Attempt: Retry and get RF working well. Also increasing Ar puff for the Hirex team. Result: EDA H-mode, triggered Ohmically at 0.56s. Good boronization, apparently. Starting density is still too high. RF is conditioning up. Shape looks a good match to the target. Matt says Ar pulse is appropriate. |
| Jan 7 2011 08:44:48:727AM | 1110107003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3.
Attempt. Continue boronization recovery. Result: EDA H-mode, injection at 1s, followed by faults on J-port. Density is still high. J-port is still conditioning up. H-mode power threshold is nice and low. |
| Jan 7 2011 08:54:51:533AM | 1110107004 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 4.
Attempt. Continue recovering J-port. Result: Similar, with bigger injection at 1s. Looks like another J-port spew. |
| Jan 7 2011 09:05:08:090AM | 1110107005 | Yunxing Ma | Minor adjustment to fiber plate: bot 5F |
| Jan 7 2011 09:10:08:887AM | 1110107005 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 5.
Attempt: Modify shape to be more "JFT-2M-like." Trying to match the shape on 1101214013. The hope is that the change in shape will help get the density down early. . . . Result: No big injections that time. Looks like EDA H-mode still. Lots of J-port restrikes after 1s. Shape looks good. Density still too high. |
| Jan 7 2011 09:34:49:627AM | 1110107006 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 6
Attempt: Clean up RF pulse. Result: Reasonably good RF program, with some heating in evidence. Prad still fairly low. Density is stubbornly high, still. Next: Go to 8T. |
| Jan 7 2011 10:10:19:217AM | 1110107007 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 7:
Attempt: Raise field and run it again. Result: Steady H-mode, with <1.5MW ICRF. Heating is underwhelming. Injection at 0.9s. H-mode density clamps at nebar of 2.6e20. neped~2.5e20. |
| Jan 7 2011 10:27:33:840AM | 1110107008 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 8.
Attempt: Increasing He3 puff. Result: Target density is way down now. We must have outgassed the walls with the last disruption. H-mode is late, and extends into ramp-down. There appear to be ELMs. Edge Temp is pretty substantial, ~700eV around 1.2s. Next: adjust nl04 target to a more reasonable level. |
| Jan 7 2011 10:30:33:457AM | 1110107008 | Phil Snyder | Interesting shot. After a very large injection at ~0.85s, the plasma seems to recover.
There seems to be a dramatic rise in the pedestal pressure around 1.14s that corresponds roughly to the appearance of ELM-like events. During this phase, pedestal temperature (very roughly 700ev) and density (~2e20) both rise, and then seem to saturate. Looks promising for ELMy H-mode at 8T. |
| Jan 7 2011 10:51:43:790AM | 1110107009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9.
Attempt: Try again. Result: Still a late H-mode: t=1.14s. Nice and hot, but degrading in quality as the RF faults increase. No big injection that time. Next: Ramp to 3MW by 0.9s. |
| Jan 7 2011 10:52:27:483AM | 1110107009 | Phil Snyder | Another interesting shot, similar to 08.
After RF power rises to ~3MW at ~1.1s, get H-mode transition and high pedestal pressure phase from ~1.15-1.25s with some ELMs. RF power is uneven, and this likely impacts the dynamics here. |
| Jan 7 2011 12:01:32:487PM | 1110107009 | Jerry Hughes | Arturo points out a WCM-like fluctuation during the ELMY H-mode periods on
shots 8 and 9. Here are examples:
|
| Jan 7 2011 11:29:30:680AM | 1110107010 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 10.
Long delay for a fuse change. Attempt: Higher power sooner. Result: L-H occurs earlier, at 0.98s. but big injections come in shortly after, and the radiation is too strong to overcome. Next: Try to shift strike point inboard with a -5mm RXL change. |
| Jan 7 2011 11:31:57:790AM | 1110107010 | Phil Snyder | Get H-mode early, and pedestal pressure rises, but large injection
at ~1.04s ends high performance phase (some secondary rise in pedestal pressure at ~1.3s but this is already into rampdown) |
| Jan 7 2011 12:11:46:570PM | 1110107011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11.
No plasma. OH1 failed to fire. |
| Jan 7 2011 12:10:55:257PM | 1110107012 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 12.
A PLC test. Results are not good. |
| Jan 7 2011 12:19:19:090PM | 1110107013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13:
PLC test #2. Still no OH1 |
| Jan 7 2011 12:39:48:577PM | 1110107014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14.
Still testing OH1 |
| Jan 7 2011 12:39:57:327PM | 1110107015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15.
Still testing OH1 |
| Jan 7 2011 12:50:46:293PM | 1110107016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16.
Still testing OH1. Seems to have succeeded. |
| Jan 7 2011 01:04:55:247PM | 1110107017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17.
Dud. |
| Jan 7 2011 01:35:39:800PM | 1110107018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Attempt: Plasma attempt reproducing shot 10 with RXL shifted in slightly. Result: Something is heating up in the divertor and injecting during the early part of the H-mode. Next: Try some Ne. |
| Jan 7 2011 01:46:04:353PM | 1110107019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19.
Attempt: Repeat with Ne from H-bottom enabled: 0.4--0.6s chopped at 30%. Fill pressure is 3psi, so there may be too much. Result: Never got to the Ne puff. Disrupts at 0.42s. Density is too low. |
| Jan 7 2011 02:30:29:470PM | 1110107020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20.
Attempt: Retry Result: Another early disruption. |
| Jan 7 2011 02:40:35:323PM | 1110107021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21:
Attempt: Repeat shot 010, with some early density tweak. Result: Makes it to the RF heated phase without disrupting. Still have substantial injections. Arturo notes a clear WCM from reflectometry prior to the H-mode formation This is accompanied by a clear Te pedestal and no ne pedestal. It seems we can't stay out of I-mode these days. |
| Jan 7 2011 03:01:23:513PM | 1110107022 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 22.
Attempt: Retry with a less aggressive ICRF ramp-rate. Result: Injection is there at 0.81s, but not as severe. Matt says we have ample Ne. Probably need more source power to get the H-mode sooner. Next: Have ICRF start at 0.6s, ramp at same rate up to 4MW. Continue Ne seeding. |
| Jan 7 2011 03:34:22:513PM | 1110107023 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 23. Attempt: Try to get H-mode earlier Result: Dithers, then full H-mode transition at 0.92s. A couple of substantial ELMs in the first H-mode. |
| Jan 7 2011 03:35:03:410PM | 1110107023 | Phil Snyder | H-Mode transition occurs earlier, and there is a high pedestal
period with ELMs from ~0.9-1s. |
| Jan 7 2011 03:47:03:420PM | 1110107024 | Phil Snyder | Again has a brief period of high pedestal with a couple ELMs from 0.9-1s, but then goes into EDA H-mode. |
| Jan 7 2011 04:28:40:003PM | 1110107024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Attempt: Retry with a different Ne puff (1/2 the fill pressure, 30% instead of 20% chop). Similar RF demand. Result: Beginning of shot looks similar to 023. H-mode with a couple of ELMs. Instead of multiple back-transitions, this goes solidly EDA after the first couple of ELMs. Too collisional, I guess. Next: Try to reduce the Ne seeding. ***Update: H-bottom was stuck open for nearly the whole shot, apparently. May explain the EDAness of the shot. *** |
| Jan 7 2011 04:07:28:733PM | 1110107025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25.
Attempt: Rerun 024. A Ne leak occurred after 024, which meant that H-bottom had to be pumped out before this shot. Result: Lots of injections. I think we need our Ne back. There is a phase with apparent ELM(s) at ~1.25s. |
| Jan 7 2011 04:30:39:663PM | 1110107026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26.
Attempt: 025 with H-bottom filled to 1.5psi, 20% chop. Result: Fizzle. The Ne needs to be moved to behind a non-leaking valve. |
| Jan 7 2011 04:50:29:617PM | 1110107027 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 27.
Attempt: Ne has been moved to B-side lower. 1.5psi, will try a 40% chop. Result: Dud. EF1U again. |
| Jan 7 2011 05:29:12:233PM | 1110107028 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 28.
Attempt: Retry Result: Plasma, with H-mode. Big injection prior to H-mode at 0.89s, and lots of Prad after that. Next: Raise Ne fill to 3psi and increase chop to 80%. |
| Jan 7 2011 05:52:44:700PM | 1110107029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29.
Attempt: Retry with more Ne. Result: Definitely got more Ne (almost 0.3 torr-L). Maybe too much. No injections. H-mode comes after 1s. There is a remarkably coherent fluctuation in the H-alpha, Prad and ICRF in the period before the L-H transition. H-modes are EDA, with (I think) QCMs. No ELMs Next: Reduce Ne |
| Jan 7 2011 06:08:20:533PM | 1110107030 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 30
Attempt: Retry with Ne chop reduced from 80% to 60%. Result: It ran. Got some H-modes. There is some ELM activity at about 0.95s, and maybe elsewhere. RF ran fairly cleanly. No big injections. |
| Jan 7 2011 06:22:47:087PM | 1110107030 | Phil Snyder | Interesting shot with multiple H-modes and some ELMs.
Periods of very high pedestal pressure around 1.02s and 1.22s. |

We pumped it out, but left the valve enabled. It may reseat, but this shot will be w/o neon results -------------------------------- plasma into rampdown, but 2Pi is up by .8 s --- need that neon |

Tommy refilled h-bottom. Still leaking but at only 20% the rate we had following shot 24. No DPCS changes results -------------------------------- fizzle --- too much neon --- replace argon with neon on the next shot |
