MP521A Set up an EDA H-mode plasma at 5.5 T using 70 Mhz ICRF. Suggested target shot is 1100322007, but do not use the short pulse of 80 Mhz at 0.5 s. Use higher plasma current, 0.9 MA. Start without an argon pulse. Ensure that all of the other required diagnostics are obtaining good data: CXRS, MSE, PCI. Establish an ITB, then slowly add argon, 40 ms to begin. Increment until HIREX has adequate data. Once an ITB is established, begin scanning the magnetic field down in 0.1 T increments, reducing the plasma current to maintain fixed q_95 if possible. When ITB is lost, increase the magnetic field increment to 0.2 T until reaching 4.2 T Decrease the magnetic field increment to 0.1 T and continue until 3.9 T Once the field scan is completed, return to 5.4 T and add 80 Mhz central heating late in the pulse to hold the ITB in steady state.

The ITB started while the ICRF was faulting. Very interesting. 1110118004 H-mode, back transition, H-mode, good ITB, forming after the ICRF terminated. Power threshhold appears to be zero. If this run plan called for Ohmic ITBs, we'd be in great shape. 1110118005 See shot 2. RF faulted, no H-mode. It's too soon to blame the 40 ms of Argon we asked for. 1110118006 RF was ramped. There was a short H-mode which was peaking up, but it had an untimely back transition. The rf group is going to lower the power a little. The HIREX had data during the ITB 1110118007 RF was perfect. An ITB was formed. HIREX got data. We will start reducing the magnetic field and plasma current to see if we can get at least half of our field scan done today. 1110118008 5.43 T. Very late H-mode with likely a short ITB. We're going to repeat this setting and see if we can get a longer H-mode and ITB. 1110118009 5.4 T. Multiple H-modes, but the last one has a good ITB. We are going to step down the field and current for the next shot. 1110118010 Early disruption. 1110118011 Disrupts at 0.8 s. 1110118012 H-mode, back transition, restrike and disruption, We'll tweak the magnetic field to move the resonance a little bit further in to see if it makes a difference. 1110118013 5.22 T. No steady H-mode. We'll resume from this point in the morning.

A faulty contactor prevented the alternator from making is last-stage transfer this morning, which resulted in its being spun down and examined. It was finally brought up to speed at around 14:00. In the three hours we had available, we accomplished the following: Shot 001 was a successful gas test. Shots 002 through 009 ran fairly well, and we obtained a number of ITBs at 5.5T and 5.4T with q95=4.2. We continued the Bt/Ip scan at fixed q95 on shots 010 through 012. These were at 5.3T, and were all ended by early disruptions, apparently induced by injections from the divertor. The last shot, 013, pushed on to 5.2T, and was free of large injections. SL will pick up her run tomorrow morning, with D. Pace as PO. Startups on the early shots today looked good, but by shot 5 I was seeing a lot of early bounces and sometimes early hards. I tried to tweak the startup with small changes to EF4 and the pre-fill, but never really achieved a satisfying result. I also increased the PG3 demand at t=0 late in the day, and saw very little effect. Scorecard: Gas test: 1 Plasma into ramp-down: 9 Disruptions in flattop: 3 Fizzles: 0 Duds: 0
