| Yesterday we had a half-day run with some great ITB's, but only two
successfully controlled with on-axis heating (and they weren't great). The main problem was the H-Mode back transition that occurred frequently as the ITB developed (which was rather quick relative to previous runs). We cranked up J-port off-axis power to 2.4 MW finally, and this helped us stay in H-Mode. However, we still had D&E preheat on, which prevented an ITB from forming. We fooled around with Bt, Ip, ne_tgt quite a bit, with some statistically invalid conclusions. Today we will adjust Bt, Ip, ne_tgt to favor ITB formation, disregarding Pth scaling for EDA H-mode (the ITB limits the parameter space well within EDA). We need to develop a good ITB, then hit it with on-axis power to control Zeff and Prad so we can stay in H-Mode. Yet we want a very peaked density before we hit it with on-axis heating. If we are successful, we may get to do some vertical jogs (Jerry Hughes suggests downward, since we are close to DN, so upward may be vertically unstable). NEXT: Following RF conditioning, repeat shot 1110119033 but with J-port power 2.4 MW, same as 32. No D&E yet: want to check ITB development . 40 ms argon. Keep ne_tgt=1.1. Going back to 5.4 T, 0.8 MA. See how quickly ITB develops and apply on-axis heating accordingly, in efforts to both control ITB, and keep Prad from blowing up the H-Mode. |
