Preliminary summary:

Very hard to stay in H-mode as we lost the boronization. Got a couple of
great shots by changing the heating scheme. A few shots into the day, the
impurity accumulation and associated radiation caused back transitions in
the range 0.9 to 1.2 seconds. We spent most of the day optimizing the on-axis
heating to control the impurity accumulation, in efforts to extend the ITB
duration. Catherine's preheat scheme with reduced J power worked well for one
shot. Steve Wukitch's neon puffing scheme, with high D&E preheat and J port
powers was very successful at the end of the run (29-31), and led to our
highest central densities. However, we needed more development to get the
on-axis heating strong enough to raise Te0 significantly. The best shots
were 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 17, 24, 30, 31. Also 1110120030 from yesterday.

We saw some changes on PCI for some of the shots during on-axis heating, but
not as large as on 1100324019. We had the PCI mask at a horizontal orientation
for most of the run until we rotated it 6 degrees for 29-31.

We were careful to time the on-axis D&E port pulses to synch with the DNB
for CXRS. We also puffed NINJA D2 gas and ran GPI, CXRS, thermocouples, etc.
Reflectometry was also collecting data.

Breakdown was late for some shots, but it was corrected by lowering IC_EF4U.
Shortening prefill caused two bouncers, but corrected by restoring the prefill.

Tried Ne puff from H-bottom (2 psi) in shot 29, 30 and 31. This puff helped to maintain long EDA H-mode and got the best ITB shots.

RESULT: Late H-Mode near 0.94s, ITB ne0max ~ 4.5. Sawteeth remained.
Very similar J-port fault on third pulse as in 11101200030, but not
exactly same. DNB current sags during H-mode (not typical).
Zeff was much lower this shot (about 1.5 from Zave), compared
to 2.8 in 0030.

Prad keeps ramping throughout. Zeff jumps from 1.7 to 2.7 when
sawteeth disappear. This shot was nearly identical to shot 30 (last
shot yesterday), except that ne0 and Te0, Ti0 sag a little more after 1.3 sec.
RF looks perfect.

NEXT: keep same setup, but add in a 1 MW on-axis pulse at 1.2 sec, to blast
Te0 up when the density is most peaked. Keep the same 0.6 MW pulse train after
this.

Looks like an injection near 0.785 sec terminated H-Mode and faulted J.
Actually a nice ITB, as pointed out by Steve Wolfe. ne0 peaks 1.4 sec
near 5.2. The on-axis pulse at 1.4 caused ne0 to drop back to 4,
but it did level off Prad. The first large on-axis pulse didn't hinder
the ITB ne0 rampup much. Lost sawteeth at 1.16, just before first on-axis
pulse. Te0 goes downhill starting 1.237 s, but Te(r) doesn't hollow.


GPI was disabled up through this shot...M. Churchill turning it on...

NEXT: repeat, this time turning off the injection...

Sawteeth remained. First on-axis pulse dropped ne0 to ~3. Prad leveled
starting 1.26 sec.

NEXT: Move E preheat and J-port ramp earlier by 100ms to start at 0.5 sec,
leave on-axis pulses same.

Nice ITB with ne0 ~ 4.7, but break in slope in prad_bolo around 1.0 sec.

Classic impurity accumulation: Zeff increases from 2 to 3 starting 1.0 sec.

ne0 ~ 5.2 at 1.07 s. Nothing obvious on PCI. There was a J port
fault at the tail end of the first E port pulse. This shot very similar
to 2, better than 5, but drooped more than 2 b/c of the RF fault.
Best shot so far is 2, which was not quite as good as 30.

NEXT: repeat with 1.2 MW first E port pulse at 1.1 sec.

much larger impurity pileup after sawteeth disappeared at 1.0 s.
J faulted after 2nd on-axis pulse. PCI does show some interesting
changes during the first on-axis pulse on this shot, from 1.1 - 1.25 sec.
QC freq. appears to move from 70 kHz to 125, then falls to 110 kHz.
Response trails Te0.

NEXT: try a small on-axis pulse at 1.0 sec, to try to reduce impurity
pileup, without compromising ne0 too much.

the first on-axis pulse, in phase with Te0.

The 400 kW on-axis warming starting 0.95 sec was too strong,
and halted the density rise. It did not seem to help lower Prad.
So get rid of the warming -- the extra heat may be increasing
the impurity source. Lower E-port power to 1.5 MW in case got
injection from E. ne_tgt=1.1.

impurity buildup is probably not Ar.

NEXT: Try lowering the J-port power as suggested by Steve Wolfe, using
1060726022 as a basis as suggested by Catherine Fiore. This has a
2MW preheat, which was D,E, followed by 1 MW J-port. This may help
reduce the impurity influx. Our Zeff and target densities are nearly
the same as in the 2006 case. We will bring J down to 1.5 MW from
a peak of 2 MW preheat (we will use J for the preheat instead of D,E,
since we have more power available in J now than in 2006).

We will keep the D-port pluses starting 1.2 sec.

Paul thinks we are looking at the upper half of the cross-section.
