MP 614. Pedestal modifications with lower hybrid in EDA H-mode Overnight boronization requested, followed by He ECDC. Use recipe from latest boronization. Special gas request: Fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) Fill H-bottom with 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG5) Fill NINJA with 8 psi He. ICRF: all transmitters available LH: make available, but not on first shot, set up as on 1101202: >>50kV >>90 Degree phasing >>start at 0.9 sec >>stop at 1.4 sec >>launcher at 0.1 mm or 1270 Cryopump: yes, available on first shot. DNB: yes Requested diagnostics: TS, ECE, TCI, HXR camera, div probes, bolos, Ly-a, reflectometry, fast magnetics, Edge CXRS, SOL reflectomery, PCI. Special request for LH group: spectrum analyzer connected to probe on LH grill Starting shot: Load from 1101202030. 5.4T, 600kA, target nl04=6x1019m-2. SSEP=-0.8cm. Cryopump ON. Pulse PG1 from 0.30 to 0.35s for diagnostic Ar, but leave B-side lower disabled for first shot. Set H-bottom to chop and program a 70V PG5 pulse from 0.35 to 0.45s. Shot plan: (1) Begin boronization recovery. Allow ICRF to exercise antennas from 0.6 to 1.5s in each shot until >2MW is cleanly obtained from some combination of J+E. Exercise D also. Lower Ne pulse steadily shot to shot and confirm steady EDA H-mode can be maintained. Attempt to proceed with zero Ne puffing, although if heat loading or injections begin to look problematic, seed some more. Allow NINJA puff after 1.1s for GPI shake-down. NO LOWER HYBRID YET! (3--5 shots) (2) Turn off NINJA. Program flat Prf=2MW. Inject LH power at n_||=1.9, ramping Plh from 100kW to 600kW from 0.9 to 1.4s. Use this ramp for the first guess for threshold power, P0, for the density pump-out effect. Put NINJA back on and repeat shot with flat LH power program at levels of P0, P0-100kW, and P0+100kW. If the NINJA puffs are detrimental, reduce them or turn them off. If the NINJA puffs seem non-perturbative, run a case with GPI and zero LH power. (5--6 shots) (3) Launch LH power from only the central sets of columns, at maximum level feasible, using the same n_||. This configuration should allow phase change on demand. Take comparison shot with counter-Ip phasing, and then one with heating phasing. (4--5 shots) (4) Taking a suitable case from above, increase Ip by 0.1MA shot by shot until either pedestal modification is no longer observed, or we can no longer get steady H-modes. If plasmas go ELM-free, try putting in LH before ICRF, or attempt to ramp Ip up during an already established H-mode. (5--7 shots) (5) ICRF power scan. Take a well-established case from earlier steps and increase power. At 1.1s, step ICRF power up by 0.5MW, and at 1.25s, step up again by 0.5MW (or to max available). It is okay to try D-port out. Next, run a case in which ICRF is stepped down by 0.5MW at 1.1s, and then again at 1.25s. Then, to establish a control, rerun these shots with Plh=0. (4--6 shots) |

| SL summary for 1110126
MP614. The goal of today's run was to further explore and understand the pedestal modifications that are observed in some EDA H-modes upon application of lower hybrid power. We began the run by reproducing a suitable target shot, 1101202030. This is a 600kA, 5.4T shot with SSEP of of -8mm. With 500kW of LH power, this target shot exhibited a clear density reduction and temperature boost. We spent much of today's run trying to emulate this result. Somewhat complicating the interpretation of today's result was the fact that the main fueling was set up with He, rather than D2, by mistake. This was suspected and reported by C. Fiore, based on low neutron rates, by mid-afternoon. It was in fact found to be the case by S. Wolfe around 4:30 after a series of duds led us to look carefully at the discharge setup. I will have to examine the data to try to determine what, if any data, have enough D fraction to be useful. But it seems unlikely at this stage that we can study these alongside the D plasmas of previous runs. Nonetheless, there are some things to report: On several shots we were successful inobtaining steady EDA H-modes with reduced density and enhanced Te,ped. However the effect was not as strong as had been previously observed in D plasmas, and the evolution following LH turn-on or turn-off seemed to happen on slower time scales. We had fairly clean H-modes early (002, 003, 007, 008, 009), but the Mo started to hit us hard after a few shots, and we had a distressing series of shots in which the rate of rise of radiation in the H-modes was increasing shot to shot. Ultimately we ameliorated this with an increase in target density, although after that we never got the H-mode density back down to the levels of earlier in the day. I decided not to try the piece of the plan that involved a phasing scan from the central columns of the LH launcher, at reduced power. This looked unlikely to pay off, since we were having trouble seeing much effect on the plasma at the 200-300kW level, and G. Wallace estimated it could take several shots even to condition the central columns to that level of power. As Mo radiation had risen anyway, it made sense to move forward with the ICRF power scan. Shots 024, 026 and 027 coupled between 3.8 and 4.9MW of ICRF concurrent with LH being injected into EDA H-modes. Notably, LH tolerated up to 1MW from D-port, which conventional wisdom says is not feasible, at least in D discharges. |

| PO mistake day.
B-main (C-side) was requested to be He instead of D, in PO plan. During a run, there were couple of Indications of this mistake 1) very small neutron rate (as suggested by C. Fiore) 2) low Ha signal compared to the reference However, it was not determined until we had two dud in shot 25 and 26 and S. Wolfe, J. Irby, and SL checked the all setup. Besides the mistake, C-Mod itself run well. 23 plasmas continued until the ramp-down phase. We had three dud in late afternoon and 5 Xray shutdown in the morning. X-ray shutdown also might have been the indication of He. |

| Jan 26 2011 09:02:41:577AM | 1110126001 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 1:
We are delayed waiting for ICRF to get through test shots. |
| Jan 26 2011 09:38:51:447AM | 1110126001 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 1.
Attempt: Boronization recovery. Result: Plasma, L-mode. Got some RF from J and D. Ne puffing seems to have worked, although it was incorrectly programmed to be 50ms instead of 100ms. PO is correcting for next shot. Thomson data look pretty clean. Shape looks decent. PCI, magnetics, reflectometry are taking data. |
| Jan 26 2011 09:48:53:830AM | 1110126002 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 2:
Attempt: More boronization recovery. Result: Plasma, with RF from D and J. H-mode. ne,ped~1.8e20 Looks like we got the Ne in that we wanted. FFT on E-port still not working. Rick will try to get 2MW out of J-port on next shot. |
| Jan 26 2011 10:04:27:030AM | 1110126003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3.
Attempt: Continue bringing up J, try for some E-port. Result: Plasma. Steady H-mode. Not bad. 2MW from J-port. E-port fired without FFT. D-port working well at 1MW level. Next shot. Put in some LH on next shot. |
| Jan 26 2011 10:19:10:697AM | 1110126004 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 4.
Attempt: Move on to first piece of actual run plan. Put in a LH ramp. Result: Early disruption |
| Jan 26 2011 10:33:43:537AM | 1110126005 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 5.
Attempt: Retry Result: Another early disruption. Impurities are coming in, starting at 0.26s. I can't find anything obviously wrong with the discharge/startup. Injections are reported from the D-port area. Fe/Mo. Thanks, Matt. |
| Jan 26 2011 10:44:54:810AM | 1110126006 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 6.
Attempt: Retry Result: Plasma. Brief H-mode. J-port faults and the plasma drops back into L-mode before the LH comes on. The LH looks good, and seems to make some non-thermals. However, the LH program is actually not what was requested. Put in ramp for next shot. Also, we will add some power from E-port. |
| Jan 26 2011 11:03:40:740AM | 1110126007 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 7.
Result: Good H-mode, steady RF from J+E. Clean LH too, although the ramp doesn't seem to have much of an effect on the plasma. Confinement steadily degrades. May be over dense with neutrals, post-boronization. Radiation seems to be pretty small, and constant, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Take another shot with 600kW flat LH power. See what happens. |
| Jan 26 2011 11:18:48:087AM | 1110126008 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 8.
Result: Long, steady H-mode with steady ne drop and Prad drop. Some hash on the Dalpha during the LH pulse. When LH turns off at 1.4s, nebar comes back up. |
| Jan 26 2011 11:31:36:893AM | 1110126009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9.
Attempt. Repeat shot 8 with reduced Ne. PG5 from 70V to 40V. Result: Pretty clean H-mode. Desnity drop and Te rise is a little more evident when LH comes on. Matt informs me I may have the optimimum level of Ne, based on the Mo time trace when RF comes on. Next. Have PO raise ZCUR while LH is on, and see if that has an impact on density. Will probably stay LSN. |
| Jan 26 2011 11:48:21:190AM | 1110126010 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 10.
Very early disruption. |
| Jan 26 2011 12:00:56:030PM | 1110126011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11.
Attempt: Retry 9, with ZCUR ramp from 1.0 to 1.4s. Result: H-modes, 2nd one steady. Density reduction begins around 1.23s. SSEP is ~-5mm. Next: Keep ZCUR flat at a somewhat higher value, giving SSEP~-5mm. Also, NINJA will puff He at 1.3s |
| Jan 26 2011 12:07:28:483PM | 1110126012 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 12.
Result: DPCS shut down discharge early due to early hards. |
| Jan 26 2011 12:25:42:317PM | 1110126013 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 13. Result: Got the plasma back. ZCUR is up early, and may be making it harder to access H-mode. Dithers from 0.7s to 0.9s, then H-mode. LH power may have been the thing that kicked it in. With LH on, H-mode nebar is 1.8e20. neped is 1.3e20. Density rises after LH turn-off. GPI has plenty of signal from the He puff at 1.3s. Next: More RF power. |
| Jan 26 2011 12:35:16:630PM | 1110126014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14.
Attempt: Retry 13 with more ICRF power. Result: H-mode, back to L at 0.896s due to radiation. Bad Mo rising. 2nd H-mode has reduced density, Prad. Next: up the Ne. PG5 to 60V. |
| Jan 26 2011 12:56:05:870PM | 1110126015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15.
Attempt: Retry 14 with more Ne. Result: EDA H-mode interuptted by an injection at 1.3s. Early H-mode pretty radiative. This seems to be fixed by the LH turn on. GPI getting good time series data before and after LH turn-off at 1.4s. Next: Let's advance the entire LH pulse by 0.1s. |
| Jan 26 2011 01:08:54:820PM | 1110126016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16:
Attempt: Shot 15 with early LH onset. Result: Another drop in radiation as the H-mode evolves. It is delayed until well after LH turn-on. Density re-rises after LH turn-off. The previously observed pedestal effects are pretty weak today, although we are getting a lot of new data from the GPI and SOL reflectometer. Before going to the co vs. counter scan, we need to see whether 300kW is enough to have a measurable effect on the plasma. That will be the next shot. |
| Jan 26 2011 01:33:12:643PM | 1110126017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17:
Attempt: Repeat with reduced LH power Result: Multiple H-modes, relatively high Prad. LH never fired. So, we have a control shot. No TS. |
| Jan 26 2011 01:42:45:880PM | 1110126018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Attempt: Repeat 16 with 300kW LH power. Result: Similar traces all around, except a faster Prad rise and a H-L transition at 0.85s. Discharge conditions at 1.3s are very similar to shot 016, except higher Prad, lower Tped. |
| Jan 26 2011 01:59:26:607PM | 1110126019 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 19. Attempt: Ne pulse delayed 50ms (MLR's suggestion). Also reduce LH power to 200kW, see whether any effect remains. Result: Not so pretty. 1st H-mode evolves the same way, radiating to a H-L. 2nd H-mode is not much better. Disrupts at 1.25s. |
| Jan 26 2011 02:13:28:510PM | 1110126020 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 20. Greg says 300kW is possible from the center columns, but it would take a few shots to work up to it. Based on the 200kW and 300kW results so far, I would not expect a strong payoff, assuming we accomplished this. So, for this shot, we will raise the LH power to the level it was at on shot 15. Result: More transient, radiative H-modes. LH is not so well behaved anymore. It only successfully injects power when we are in L-mode. |
| Jan 26 2011 02:35:03:127PM | 1110126021 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 21 Attempt: Change things up a little bit. Put in LH starting at 0.55s, pre-ICRF. Result: Not much better in terms of initial H-mode quality. Next: Ohmic-phase density has come down between shot 15 and now. Maybe it's time to push it up and see if we can't steady out the initial H-mode. |
| Jan 26 2011 02:42:20:990PM | 1110126022 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 22.
Result: Shut down early due to runaways. |
| Jan 26 2011 03:05:16:050PM | 1110126023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23
Result: Multiple H-modes. Edge Te is pretty low, Prad high. Looking marginal to sustaining the H-mode at this level of Pnet. Next request more ICRF. |
| Jan 26 2011 03:22:55:790PM | 1110126024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Attempt: Repeat with more ICRF Result: That's better. After some initial transient H-modes, we have a steady EDA period with a density reduction, then a density rebuild after LH turns off. |
| Jan 26 2011 03:31:52:273PM | 1110126025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25:
Attempt: Repeat shot 24, but put in some D-port power at 1.2s. Result: Dud |
| Jan 26 2011 03:51:06:857PM | 1110126026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26.
Attempt: Repeat shot 24, but put in some D-port power at 1.2s. Result: Continuous H-mode from 0.68s to 1.5s! Almost 4MW of RF until 1.2s, then D-port injects 0.5MW. LH stays on during D-port pulse. Interestingly, the density starts to rise, when D-port turns on. |
| Jan 26 2011 04:06:14:727PM | 1110126027 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 27
Attempt: More RF from D Result: And LH doesn't mind! Density creeps up with D on still. Perhaps just outgassing? This makes things a little ambiguous, so turn off D for next shot. Next: Repeat shot 024 with Ip increased to 700kA. |
| Jan 26 2011 04:14:32:717PM | 1110126028 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 28:
Attempt: Ip=700kA Result: Short H-mode (J-port faults and doesn't recover.) Next Yijun will try to keep J on. PO will put in a slight increase to the nl04 target. |
| Jan 26 2011 04:22:56:143PM | 1110126029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29.
Result: Dud. 2nd one today. |
| Jan 26 2011 04:35:58:550PM | 1110126030 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 30.
Result: Dud III |
| Jan 26 2011 05:28:03:560PM | 1110126031 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 31.
Result: Shot ran. It has been discovered that the main fueling puff was He all day today, and not D2. |
