MP 633 Lower Hybrid Rotation Scans in Different Magnetic Geometries

The goal of this run is to help understand the co versus counter current rotation observed from LHCD.

Tentative Run plan (subject to change as rotation is observed)
1- Locked mode calibration for HiReX Sr (Ref. Shot = 1110125003).
2- USN Rotation Studies (Ref. Shot = 1101119008) Set nl04 ~4E19, PLH = 800 kW, Bt = 5.4, n||=1.6
a. Start at 800 kA and drop current (in 100 kA increments) on progressive shots to 300 kA. Identify the zero rotation change point if possible. Locked modes may require retakes of these shots.
3- Repeat Locked Mode Discharge (Ref. Shot = 1110125003)
4- LSN Rotation Studies (Ref. Shot 1101028006) set nl04~4E19, PLH = 800 kW, Bt = 5.4, n||=1.6
a. Repeat 2a in LSN geometry. Start at 800 kA and drop current (100 kA increments) until cannot go lower or no LHCD rotation change.
5- Understanding Collisionality/LH effect on Rotation. USN (Ref. Shot = 1101119008)
a. Power Scan: Ip~400kA PLH scan at 600 and 1000 kW.
b. Density scan: nl04 =3E19 to nl04 = 8E19 with current and power to be determined by previous scans.
c. n|| scan: n|| =1.9, 2.1, 2.3
d. Magnetic Field: Bt = 6.2 T and 4.6 T
6- Repeat part 5 at 700 kA for collisionality/LH scan completion

Physics Operator Plan:

Get through as much of the following as possible in one day.

Load seg 1 and 2 from 1101119008, low current startup, 400kA.

SL has decided not to start with locked mode calibration shot from 1110125003, seg 4, so just load this in segment 4, modify the first current point so we
can use the 1101119008 startup, and turn it off.

1 USN target from 1101119008, seg 2.
Change Seg1 EF4 from -1300 to -1290, modify pg4, pg3 to taste.
Seg2: Change nl04 target from 2.9e19 to 4e19
Increase Ip from 400kA to 800 kA. Note this shot used a "low
current startup", Ip gain is on in seg1, better check what else
it's doing. OH crowbars are at 0.07sec, EF1's still at .2sec.
It still overshot the 400kA a bit, so I can tweak on it a litte,
but we're going to start the current scan at 800kA and work back
down to 300kA, so just make sure the 0.1sec point is consistent
to start. May want to lower OH voltage in seg2 as we drop Ip.

2. Run lm calibration shot from seg4. May just reload the whole thing, in
which case I have to remember to tell the EO to load the engineering setup
so I don't get the early crowbar time.


3. Import LSN target 1101028006, seg2. This is a 550kA case with a normal
startup, but I can use the low current seg1 since we're again going
to be scanning down. Initially set nl04 from 2.5e19 to 4e19 and raise
Ip from 550 to 800kA. Scan down in Ip to 300kA in 100kA increments.

4. Back to USN case, 400kA.
a) Do an LH power scan: 600kW, 1MW
b) scan nl04 from 3e19 to 8e19, current and power tbd
c) N|| scan (3 points)
d) TF to 6.2T (172kA, remember to raise PLC limit)
TF to 4.6T (128kA)
5. Repeat part 5 at 700kA

Despite the many disruptions, duds, and fizzles that plagued this run, we got some very good data.

The USN section of the experiment was completed and the dv versus ip scaling was confirmed. Also the zero rotation change point (~550 kA) was identified at nl04~4E19 and PLH 800 kW. Interestingly, above the zero rotation point in Ip, the scaling of rotation with Ip appears to be completely different. All of 700 kA, 800 kA, and 900 kA discharges had very similar rotation behaviors. An interesting observation from this run was that almost all of the final rotation magnitudes at the end of the 0.5 s LH pulse were identically -20 km/s.

The LSN scan was also successful. We discovered that the LHCD can go in the co-current direction. The reversal point (~400 kA) however is significantly lower in current than the USN case. For higher currents, the delta in rotation is effectively unchanged by the plasma current, but for lower currents we recover the seeming Ip scaling.

It was also possible to piggyback intrinsic rotation scaling with Ip by the pre-LHCD sections of the discharges.

Overall, it seems like there is a sharp bifurcation in the rotation in both LSN and USN, but at different currents. The location of the bifurcation in DN would be interesting to observe but will have to be left for later. We were not able to do the collisionality scans, but since the Te, Ti, and ne were comparable in the USN cases for both co- and counter-rotation this effect is looking less likely; the density however may still be a culprit in the problem. There is a possible suggestion that the reversed n|| launched from the LH launcher may explain the difference since that spectrum is lost in the scrape-off layer. Running at different n|| in the future will be needed to test this.

A long day, but a lot was accomplished. We completed
the two major current scans, one in USN and one in LSN,
and found rotation reversal points with LHCD in both configurations.
We also got a locked mode calibration shot (step 2).
Steps 4 and 5 of the SL_PLAN were not attempted. 

The initial plan of using the low current, early OH crowbar 
startup from 1101119008 for the 800kA discharges was not successful. 
After two early disruptions we put the crowbar back to .120sec and
reloaded a standard startup from Wednesday, and put the initial Ip 
point in seg2 back where it had been. This got decent discharges, and
we used the normal startup for the rest of the day, allowing overshoots
and rampdowns in the active segment for the low current cases. 

Gas puffing and increased early density program were implemented to 
avoid locked modes. This was mainly successful. The following density
control settings were implemented as of shot#9 and used for the 
remainder of the USN scan and most of the LSN scan, with a minor adjustment
for the lowest currents of LSN:
for NL04 : P=4, D=6, I=1 (Int gain after 0.6sec)
for PG3: Start at 50V from .1 to .2sec, down to maintenance level of 20V to EOF 

The same prescription was used for the LSN, resulting in slightly higher
density before and during LH, but still acceptable, until shot#30 at 300kA, 
which had a monster early marfe, followed by a locked mode. The locked 
mode at very low current seemed unusual, and was undoubtedly (?) 
associated with the marfe, which also led to _lower_ density in 
flattop. I then reduced
the PG3 feedforward from 50 to 35V, which seemed to cure the marfe and locking,
and gave good density traces, though still increased during LH. 

On shot#18 I started using Integral gain on the current to get better
control during the LHCD and also more consistent behavior on fine 
adjustments with targets near 500kA. The final settings, used from then 
on, were: P=9 from 0.5sec (moved from 0.65) and I=4 from 0.55sec, D=0.
This seemed to work well, although an even higher gain might have been
able to reduce the overshoot during LHCD even further; as it was this was
less than 10kA after the initial transient. 
For the lowest current cases, I le 400kA, I dropped the OH1V from .1 to .15sec
from 250V to 150V. The seg1 value of 250V was left in place. 

The LH group reported that the density at the launcher increased dramatically
as the current was decreased, and requested variations of the outer gap 
to compensate. These gap changes, totalling over a cm for the 800 to 300kA
current scans, seemed to help the LH coupling and did not have any obvious
detrimental effect on the plasma.

When we moved on to the LSN current scan (shot#21-34) I extended the 
flattop to 1.7sec as in the USN cases. These shots all terminated
at about 2sec, while many of the USN ones continued to rampdown later
than that. I thought I had missed extending some gains, but couldn't find 
anything. Since we were scanning down in current anyway, I ended up speeding
up the rampdown so it ended by the time the plasma was going to disrupt.

We had a couple of fizzles, and some early injections leading to runaways.
Small changes in the seg1 gas programming, PG4 and PG3, were used to deal 
with these, with some success. 
There were also several flattop injections, not all associated with LH, that
led to disruptions. There was also one dud, due to failure of TF to come on;
it's been a while since that pathology showed up, but it's still out there.
We ended up with 24 plasmas past EOF out of 33 attempts. Not a great percentage,
but 24 good shots isn't too bad. LH ran well once they got the gaps they
needed, and by the end of the day we were able to anticipate the changes
fairly well.

Note some details in the programming:
 Ip has P=D=6 in seg 1, dropping to 4,0 at .1sec in seg2; seg2 has OH1V
  starting around 250V, which is probably untouched from normal. Could
  lower this and in seg1 once we start dropping the current. 
 there's a pg3 puff at .2 to .275sec, but it's only 3V, so it's mostly a noop
 argon puff is only 50msec, which seems low for a HIREX run, but I won't 
  complain until Yuri does. 
Note that the engineering invert times are 2.2sec for EF1,2,3,4, and CC;
  2.5sec for OH's; 3.2sec for TF . OH crowbars are .07sec, EF is .20.
 FD is .08 to 2.3sec
 TF current limit is 164ka, need to remember to raise it for 6.2T case,
   when we get to it. 
I think this is ready to go.

to move in to .6545)

Result: plasma full length
looks like LH stayed on to 1.3sec, then runaways increase to sat level
to end of shot. Glad I've got my film badge on!
Loop voltage drops to .3V, outer gap is 1.9 and moving in to 1.5cm,
not as much change as expected, but seems to work. 

Next: Decrease Ip to 700kA

took a bite out of the current but survived, nl04 reached 7.5, then back

early injection but it's better than it's been.
