Irby >>Setup: Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00, although an extra hour may be requested if there are delays during the run that slow data collection. Overnight boronization requested, followed by He ECDC. Use recipe from latest boronization. **Special gas setup: fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar (PG1) fill H-bottom with 2 psi Ne fill NINJA with 14 psi mix 50/50 D2/He ICRF: all transmitters available. D-port will be configured with frequency modulation, and can be turned on during selected portions of the discharges to look for effects on fluctuations, including the QCM. DNB: yes **Requested diagnostics: core and edge TS GPC, GPC2, FRCECE TCI (with the difference signal from chords 2 and 3 going to fast digitizer) div probes IR camera all working bolometry O-mode reflectometry X-mode reflectometry fast magnetics Edge CXRS Hirex Sr PCI (masked to optimize for edge fluctuations) **Starting shot: Reproduce 1100212012. This was a 0.9MA, 5.4T shot from the FY10 JRT study, with good strike point placement for the IR camera. Reduce target nl04 from 1.2e20 to 1.0e20. Enable H-bottom and B-side lower. Pulse PG1 from 0.30 to 0.35s for diagnostic Ar. Set H-bottom to chop and program a 70V PG5 pulse from 0.4 to 0.5s >>Shot plan (1) Begin boronization recovery. Allow ICRF to condition up from 0.6s to 1.5s with whatever waveforms they desire, until a clean 3MW can be injected. Use these shots to tweak plasma shape, beam pulses, NINJA puffs, etc. for optimal data collection. (~5 shots) (2) Raise Ip to 1.2MA, nl04 to 1.2e20. Run ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. If feasible, run a second discharge with power levels of 3MW and 4MW. Modest levels of Ne seeding may continue, if needed to reduce injections from PFCs. Target density may need to be reduced in order to operate ICRF. (~3 shots) (3) Set Ip to 0.9MA, nl04 to 0.9e20. Run ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. If feasible, run a second discharge with power levels of 3MW and 4MW. Use Ne as needed. (~3 shots) (4) Keeping Ip at 0.9MA, perform nl04 scan. Attempt a three point scan, from the highest feasible target (>1e20) to 0.6e20. At each density, use ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. Use Ne as needed. (~4 shots) (5) Set Ip to 0.7MA, nl04 to 0.7e20. Run ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. If feasible, run a second discharge with power levels of 3MW and 4MW. Use Ne as needed. (~3 shots) (6) Keeping Ip at 0.7MA, scan upper triangularity. Attempt to achieve a range in delta_u of 0.2 to 0.8, holding lower triangularity roughly fixed. If the extremes in delta_u result in railed power supplies or loss of steady H-mode, we can try lowering the plasma current. Some repositioning of the edge TS fibers may be needed to handle the extremes in shaping. We will attempt to hold the right gap constant, to the benefit of the midplane diagnostics. At each new shape, run ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. (~8 shots) (7) Set Ip to 0.5MA, nl04 to 0.5e20. Run ICRF from 0.7s to 1.1s at 2MW and from 1.1s to 1.5s at 3MW. MP 644, "Edge profiles and fluctuations in EDA and ELM-free H-modes" SL: J. Hughes PO: J. Irby This run attempted to collect an extensive set of edge profile data, including radial electric field, and also edge fluctuation data, associated with the pedestal in EDA and ELM-free H-mode discharges. The objective of collecting these data is to provide experimental results for use in refining and testing models of pedestal structure. This effort constitues a major part of the C-Mod contribution to the FY11 JRT in pedestal physics. The experiment also provided some useful discharges for other research, including MP600 (Y. Lin), a continuing study of the SOL heat flux channel with divertor IR (J. Terry), and the thesis work of R.M. Churchill and I. Cziegler. In the experiment, we fixed magnetic field at 5.4T and varied parameters that have been seen to affect significantly both pedestal structure and the character of edge fluctuations. Plasma current was varied between 0.5MA and 1.2MA, spanning the boundary between steady EDA H-modes with a strong quasi-coherent mode (QCM) in the edge and more quiescent ELM-free H-modes. Additionally, at a fixed current of 0.9MA, L-mode target density was scanned in the range of 1.1--1.9x10^20 m^-3, also to change the quality of the QCM. Finally we scanned upper triangularity from less than 0.3 to nearly 0.9 with other shape parameters fixed. A concerted effort was made to optimize all relevant edge diagnostics and to use them on every shot. The results are being analyzed by the C-Mod team, and will be readied for use in the ongoing pedestal experiment/modeling collaboration. This run was very successful. We collected nearly every point in our desired parameter scans, despite a late start and a few bad startups. We obtained data from Thomson scattering, beam-based CXRS, O-mode and X-mode reflectometry, PCI, fast magnetics, gas puff imaging, divertor IR and Hirex Sr. on almost every shot. Because this experiment needed to be completed before the end of the campaign in order to meet the high-level milestone, we were granted permission to extend the run to 18:00, if necessary. This extension was very useful in allowing us to complete the experiment, and thanks go out to all the personnel who stuck around and made this happen. Shots of interest: 3--9. | Machine ran extremely well today until shot 31 when we had a controlled
shutdown because of hard x-rays levels. It took 3 shots to recover from this shot. This shot followed two high triangularity shots. On the first of these discharges we ran the plasma into the wall at Z ~ 41 cm. There was almost no tweaking of the startup all day. Some dramatic changes in triangularity were produced. Problems -------- The runaway discharge on shot 31 damaged two new reflectometer mixers, which had just be installed. Lost about 45 minutes this morning bringing the data system on-line. Shot 31 was shutdown because of hards. Shots 32,33 were short, probably because of recovery from shot 31. |
