SESSION LEADER PLAN FOR 1110203 - MP599:Up/Down Poloidal Impurity Density Variation
NOTE: 10-hr run day (8:00 am - 6:00 pm)

The purpose of this run is scan parameters throught to be responsible for causing poloidal variation of impurity density on a flux surface.
According to theory, the primary driver is ion collisionality (v_ii ~ n_i/T_i^3/2) and toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields (~Bt/Bp^2).

We seek to cover a wide operating space of C-Mod Ohmic plasmas in the variables Ip, Bt and nl04. Density will be scanned during the shot and Ip and Bt will be scanned shot to shot.
The space of interest is bounded by MARFEs at high density and locked modes (LM) at low density, both of which are Ip and Bt dependent.
Sufficient signal to make measurements of He-like Ar will limit low-Ip high nl04 operation to where Te0 ~1.0-1.5 keV.
Ohmic H-modes are also to be avoided, limiting Ip but since P_LH~n_e*Bt this is also a moving target. Above all, an administrative limit of Ip=1.4 MA for machine safety is expected.

DIAGNOSTICS:
all possible n_e and T_e (TS,TCI, FRCECE,GPC1,GPC2) with GPC1 set for 5.4 T and GPC2 set for 7.5 T.
HIREXSR/JR for emissivity, flows and temperatures. (use medium mask on He-like Ar crystal)
AXUV and XTOMO for 2D emissivity measurements
laser blow-off using molybdenum
DNB allowed if CXRS can make measurements in Ohmic plasmas
HFS/LFS scanning probes and SOL reflectometer encouraged to piggyback
GPI NOT ALLOWED at low density, D2-based GPI possible at higher density range

GAS SETUP:
Main-ion species: D2
B-SIDE-LOWER: ~1.5 psi Ar enabled
cryopump for first shot

REFERENCE SHOTS:
Locked-mode: 1110128022
Outer Gap Scan: 1101207005 (remove ICRF, add Ar pulse)
Equilibrium: 1110126013 (LSN w/ small SSEP to enable pumping)

1) Load reference equilibrium (Ip=600 kA, nl04=0.65, NO ICRF). Set nl04 ramp from 0.65-0.30 from t=0.7-1.4 seconds to check pumping and density control. Ar puff from 0.3-0.4 seconds at 75 V.

2) Locked mode calibration

Proceed with the current, field and density scans. At each Bt,Ip data point, two shots will be taken.
First scanning density from a moderate level down and then from a moderate density up. Use the table of values (in nl04 10^20 units) as a rough guide.
Ramp density over 0.7 < t < 1.4, adjust as necessary for shorter flattop in high field shots
If locked mode or MARFE are not reached, make note for possible extension of density scan after (A)-(D) are completed.
Adjust PG1 voltage as necessary for sufficient Ar signal and to minimize MARFE onset.

A pretty successful day! We were able to get a large amount of MP599 forward field Ohmic parameter space covered. Also got a number of rotation reversals that should help fill in John's tables.
Thanks to PO and EO flexibility we were able to respond to alternator problems by getting lower field points at smaller RPM while they checked out vibration issues.

STARTUP TEST: 001
LOCKED MODES: 003,011,029
OUTER GAP SCAN: 013
(5 shots)

NL04 SCAN SHOTS: 004,006,008,009,014,015,017,018,020,021,022,023,025,026,028,030,031,032 (18 shots)
EARLY DISRUPTION: 002,005,007,010,012,024 (6 shots)
FIZZLE: 016 (1 shot)
NO POWER: 019,027 (2 shots)

Many of the disruptions were bricks and (check PO comments) didn't require much if any changes to run. The PO and EO were very patient with my crazy requests for shot-to-shot field and current changes.

We got good coverage of our operating space depsite a limited number of shots with nl04 scans. The nl04 scans became larger than intended, which is fine, but to get to lower density we had to simply start at lower density and then ramp up to the middle density.
This resulted in some fast density ramps at the later shot but I'll have to look at the data to see what's happening. Unlike 1100325 we didn't have any problems with MARFEs or locked modes. I think the LSN operation is the way to go for such wide parameter space scans.
We got Mo injections on a large fraction of the shots, focusing on the high field and current shots where the Te is high enough to see anything.

Below is plotted the (nl04,Ip) space covered at different fields.

PO Summary for 1110204

We operated the machine today at fields of 2.7, 3.4, 5.4 and 7.5T, and
ran currents spanning from 0.6 to 1.4MA. All shots were Ohmic, and
most had some kind of density ramp programmed in. In addition to the
standard LSN equilibrium that was loaded to do the parameter scans, we
ran two types of calibration shots: locked modes for Hirex Sr and an
outer gap scan for the bolometery diagnostics. Aside from a few
slightly dirty startups and some early disruptions, the plasmas ran well,
and we completed a fair portion of the SL's run plan.

For this run I used all 4 segments: Seg1 for startups, Seg2 for the
baseline equilibrium, Seg3 for the outer gap scan and Seg4 for the
locked mode shots. In actuality I could have used 5 segments because
the 7.5T shots needed the high-field startup loaded as well. I was
kept pretty busy by all the switching around called out in the SL's
run plan. In addition, there were alternator vibration warnings on 2
occassions that forced us to back off of the high-field sequence and
return to lower field. (1680 RPM as opposed to 1710RPM)

There were some vertical instabilities in rampdown that were corrected
by backing off of elongation, and there was some fiddling with the
prefill to reduce bounces. But there were no major glitches that
needed addressing.

Some of the density ramps at lower density did not have robust
feedback. Steve Wolfe suggests that turning off the integral gain may
have helped this. He also noted that the high-field startup could have
perhaps used a tweak in the EF4 current (10 or 20A more
positive). But it was not thought beneficial to try to explore wither
of these changes.

Scorecard:

Useful shots: 19

RESULT: early disruption due to MARFE. got nl04 ramp from 0.55-0.8. Getting low Ar signal at the end so we've hit the upper bound at this Bt/Ip.

NEXT: goto lower field, need to make up a little time so only go for one 2.7/0.6 shot.
Feb 4 2011 10:12:21:913AM1110204010Matt Reinke2.7/0.6/0.5-0.2, Ar to 70 V

to still be there.

Feb 4 2011 12:25:28:163PM1110204016Jerry HughesShot 16.

Attempt: Repeat with more Ar. Also decrease gaps to try to improve vertical
stability.
Add a 2nd pulse to PG1 from 0.9 to 1.0s, also at 70V.
Also decreasing CLEARIN by 0.003, and make the ramp in CLEARIN negative
(it had been positive, probably a holdover from some gap scan for edge
diagnostics)

Result: Plasma to 1.76s. Good density ramp. Startup looks good,
although Wolfe is very unhappy about the poloidal field program.
He says that Seg1 is merely a normal field startup with the TF increased
and started earlier. It has propagated down to me via prior high-Bt runs
going at least as far back as last December.

**Update: smw has revised his statement about the startup. He actually says
it is fine, other than that it has a EF4 setpoint which is too low
relative to our 5.4T startups.
