| SESSION LEADER PLAN FOR 1110203 - MP599:Up/Down Poloidal Impurity Density Variation
NOTE: 10-hr run day (8:00 am - 6:00 pm) The purpose of this run is scan parameters throught to be responsible for causing poloidal variation of impurity density on a flux surface. According to theory, the primary driver is ion collisionality (v_ii ~ n_i/T_i^3/2) and toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields (~Bt/Bp^2). We seek to cover a wide operating space of C-Mod Ohmic plasmas in the variables Ip, Bt and nl04. Density will be scanned during the shot and Ip and Bt will be scanned shot to shot. The space of interest is bounded by MARFEs at high density and locked modes (LM) at low density, both of which are Ip and Bt dependent. Sufficient signal to make measurements of He-like Ar will limit low-Ip high nl04 operation to where Te0 ~1.0-1.5 keV. Ohmic H-modes are also to be avoided, limiting Ip but since P_LH~n_e*Bt this is also a moving target. Above all, an administrative limit of Ip=1.4 MA for machine safety is expected. DIAGNOSTICS: all possible n_e and T_e (TS,TCI, FRCECE,GPC1,GPC2) with GPC1 set for 5.4 T and GPC2 set for 7.5 T. HIREXSR/JR for emissivity, flows and temperatures. (use medium mask on He-like Ar crystal) AXUV and XTOMO for 2D emissivity measurements laser blow-off using molybdenum DNB allowed if CXRS can make measurements in Ohmic plasmas HFS/LFS scanning probes and SOL reflectometer encouraged to piggyback GPI NOT ALLOWED at low density, D2-based GPI possible at higher density range GAS SETUP: Main-ion species: D2 B-SIDE-LOWER: ~1.5 psi Ar enabled cryopump for first shot REFERENCE SHOTS: Locked-mode: 1110128022 Outer Gap Scan: 1101207005 (remove ICRF, add Ar pulse) Equilibrium: 1110126013 (LSN w/ small SSEP to enable pumping) 1) Load reference equilibrium (Ip=600 kA, nl04=0.65, NO ICRF). Set nl04 ramp from 0.65-0.30 from t=0.7-1.4 seconds to check pumping and density control. Ar puff from 0.3-0.4 seconds at 75 V. 2) Locked mode calibration Proceed with the current, field and density scans. At each Bt,Ip data point, two shots will be taken. First scanning density from a moderate level down and then from a moderate density up. Use the table of values (in nl04 10^20 units) as a rough guide. Ramp density over 0.7 < t < 1.4, adjust as necessary for shorter flattop in high field shots If locked mode or MARFE are not reached, make note for possible extension of density scan after (A)-(D) are completed. Adjust PG1 voltage as necessary for sufficient Ar signal and to minimize MARFE onset. 3) LOW-FIELD (A),(B) PART OF TABLE (no laser blow off) (A1) Bt=3.3, Ip=0.6 - x2 shots (A2) Bt=3.3, Ip=0.8 - x2 shots (B1) Bt=2.7, Ip=0.6 - x2 shots 4) Locked mode calibration 5) Outer gap scan calibration 6) HIGH-FIELD (C) PART OF TABLE (enable Mo laser blow-off) (C1) Bt=7.5, Ip=0.6 - x2 shots (C2) Bt=7.5, Ip=0.8 - x2 shots (C3) Bt=7.5, Ip=1.0 - x2 shots (C4) Bt=7.5, Ip=1.2 - x2 shots (C5) Bt=7.5, Ip=1.4 - x2 shots 7) MID-FIELD (D) PART OF TABLE (enable Mo laser blow-off) (D1) Bt=5.4, Ip=0.6 - x2 shots (D2) Bt=5.4, Ip=0.8 - x2 shots (D3) Bt=5.4, Ip=1.0 - x2 shots (D4) Bt=5.4, Ip=1.2 - x2 shots 8) Locked mode calibration

| A pretty successful day! We were able to get a large amount of MP599 forward field Ohmic parameter space covered. Also got a number of rotation reversals that should help fill in John's tables.
Thanks to PO and EO flexibility we were able to respond to alternator problems by getting lower field points at smaller RPM while they checked out vibration issues. STARTUP TEST: 001 LOCKED MODES: 003,011,029 OUTER GAP SCAN: 013 (5 shots) NL04 SCAN SHOTS: 004,006,008,009,014,015,017,018,020,021,022,023,025,026,028,030,031,032 (18 shots) EARLY DISRUPTION: 002,005,007,010,012,024 (6 shots) FIZZLE: 016 (1 shot) NO POWER: 019,027 (2 shots) Many of the disruptions were bricks and (check PO comments) didn't require much if any changes to run. The PO and EO were very patient with my crazy requests for shot-to-shot field and current changes. We got good coverage of our operating space depsite a limited number of shots with nl04 scans. The nl04 scans became larger than intended, which is fine, but to get to lower density we had to simply start at lower density and then ramp up to the middle density. This resulted in some fast density ramps at the later shot but I'll have to look at the data to see what's happening. Unlike 1100325 we didn't have any problems with MARFEs or locked modes. I think the LSN operation is the way to go for such wide parameter space scans. We got Mo injections on a large fraction of the shots, focusing on the high field and current shots where the Te is high enough to see anything. Below is plotted the (nl04,Ip) space covered at different fields.

| PO Summary for 1110204
We operated the machine today at fields of 2.7, 3.4, 5.4 and 7.5T, and ran currents spanning from 0.6 to 1.4MA. All shots were Ohmic, and most had some kind of density ramp programmed in. In addition to the standard LSN equilibrium that was loaded to do the parameter scans, we ran two types of calibration shots: locked modes for Hirex Sr and an outer gap scan for the bolometery diagnostics. Aside from a few slightly dirty startups and some early disruptions, the plasmas ran well, and we completed a fair portion of the SL's run plan. For this run I used all 4 segments: Seg1 for startups, Seg2 for the baseline equilibrium, Seg3 for the outer gap scan and Seg4 for the locked mode shots. In actuality I could have used 5 segments because the 7.5T shots needed the high-field startup loaded as well. I was kept pretty busy by all the switching around called out in the SL's run plan. In addition, there were alternator vibration warnings on 2 occassions that forced us to back off of the high-field sequence and return to lower field. (1680 RPM as opposed to 1710RPM) There were some vertical instabilities in rampdown that were corrected by backing off of elongation, and there was some fiddling with the prefill to reduce bounces. But there were no major glitches that needed addressing. Some of the density ramps at lower density did not have robust feedback. Steve Wolfe suggests that turning off the integral gain may have helped this. He also noted that the high-field startup could have perhaps used a tweak in the EF4 current (10 or 20A more positive). But it was not thought beneficial to try to explore wither of these changes. Scorecard: Useful shots: 19 (1,4,6,8,9,14,15,17,18,20,21,22,23,25,26,28,30,31,32) Early disruptions: 5 (5,7,10,12,24) Locked mode calibrations: 4 (2,3,11,29) Outer gap scan calibration: 1 (13) Fizzle: 1 (16) No power shots due to alternator warnings: 2 (19,27) |

Attempt: Retry. Reduce pre-fill from 62ms to 59ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 09:35:53.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Density program looks good, but plasma disrupts at 1.1s. Vertically unstable. kappa is 1.7! |
| Feb 4 2011 09:58:53:257AM | 1110204009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9.
Attempt: 3.4T, 800kA nl04 from 0.6e20 to 0.8e20 per SL request. Set nl04 in Seg2 to ramp from [0.7e20,0.9e20] from [0.7,1.4]s. Decreasing ZCUR during flattop by 0.005m, preserving the ramp down that is programmed. Also raising ZXU by net 0.005m in the flattop. Finally, return pre-fill to 62ms, as on shot 7. Load at 4-Feb-2011 09:51:07.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Startup is much improved, though not through anything I've done. Got the density ramp. Overfuelled to a disruption, actually. n/ncrit looks to be more under control. |
| Feb 4 2011 10:14:11:810AM | 1110204010 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 10.
Attempt: 2.7T, 600kA, nl04 ramping from 0.5e20 to 0.2e20 !!! q95 will be pretty low. TF to -72100 PG1 reduced to 70V. Ip to -600000 nl04 ramping [0.6e20,0.1e20] over [0.7,1.4]s Load at 4-Feb-2011 10:07:15.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Startup doesn't go well. I think something falls in again, as on 005. MLR says boron. Increase in carbon/Halpha, followed by a few hards. |
| Feb 4 2011 10:25:03:503AM | 1110204011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11.
Attempt: Locked mode calibration shot. SL wants to keep cryopump on. Turn OFF Seg2 Turn ON Seg4 Load at 4-Feb-2011 10:17:02.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Shot ran as programmed. No incidents during startup. |

| Feb 4 2011 11:23:13:310AM | 1110204013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13.
Attempt: repeat with higher density. Raise nl04 program from 5e19 to 6e19 for duration of shot. Load at 4-Feb-2011 10:49:33.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Significant delay due to the cryopump fill valve being stuck. Needs consultation from Brian. Let's proceed without the cryo. Changing pre-fill to 25ms from 62ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 11:15:57.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Good shot, ramps outer gap as programmed. Density control is of course poor, but that doesn't matter. |
| Feb 4 2011 11:45:55:687AM | 1110204014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14.
Attempt: 7.5T, 800kA, nl04 from 0.6e20 to 0.95e20, per SL request. Cryopump will be off, until it can be made to work again. Prep work for the high Bt shot. Edit Seg2 while it's inactive. Set TF to -210000. starting at 0.1s, hold until 1.25s, then ramp down by 3s. Set Ip to -800000. ramping down starting at 1.25s. Set nl04 demand to ramp [7e19,0.35e19] over [0.5,1.25]s Load at 4-Feb-2011 11:08:53.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Now activate Seg2 and deactivate Seg3. Now import Seg1 from 1110107030 into Seg1. Set TF in Seg1 to -210000. Pre-fill is 24ms. Should be okay without cryopump on. Checked that Ip to -800000. ramping down starting at 1.25s. Set nl04 demand to ramp [6e19,9.5e19] over [0.5,1.25]s Load at 4-Feb-2011 11:34:30.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Now we're ready. Result: Disrupts at 1.53s, vertically unstable. Got a density ramp of 0.5e20 to 0.8e20, which is not exactly what SL was looking for. He seems generally happy. |
| Feb 4 2011 12:07:53:840PM | 1110204015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15.
Attempt: 7.5T, 1MA, nl04 from 0.8e20 to 1.05e20, per SL request. Increase Ip in Seg2 to -1000000. Set nl04 to ramp [0.9e20,1.05e20] from [0.6,1.25]s Load at 4-Feb-2011 11:52:00.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Put a little nudge in ZXU in the rampdown to try to relax the kappa. Load at 4-Feb-2011 11:57:47.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Disrupts at beginning of rampdown. The vertical instability seems to still be there. |
| Feb 4 2011 12:25:28:163PM | 1110204016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16.
Attempt: Repeat with more Ar. Also decrease gaps to try to improve vertical stability. Add a 2nd pulse to PG1 from 0.9 to 1.0s, also at 70V. Also decreasing CLEARIN by 0.003, and make the ramp in CLEARIN negative (it had been positive, probably a holdover from some gap scan for edge diagnostics) Load at 4-Feb-2011 12:20:39.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Fizzle, bounces at 15ms. |
| Feb 4 2011 12:55:35:523PM | 1110204017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17.
Attempt: Retry Increase PG4 pre-puff from 24ms to 28ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 12:27:39.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Shot goes. Gets much farther into rampdown this time: 1.6s @600kA, 6.4T. Startup still bounces. |
| Feb 4 2011 01:39:19:460PM | 1110204018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Attempt: 7.5T, 1.2MA, nl04 from 0.9e20 to 1.15e20, per SL request IP in Seg2 to -1.2e6 nl04 in Seg2 to [1e20,1.25e20] at [0.6,1.25]s. Made another reduction to flattop CLEARIN, set to -0.003, ramping down after 1.25s. Increase PG4 pre-fill from 28ms to 30ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 13:06:38.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Shot goes to almost 1.7s, gets to <0.6MA, 6T before disrupting. Density ramp is a little turncated, but SL is happy. |
| Feb 4 2011 02:00:30:517PM | 1110204019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19.
Attempt: 7.5T, 1.4MA. nl04 from 1.0e20 to 1.3e20, per SL request. IP in Seg2 to -1.4e6 nl04 to [1.1e20,1.4e20] at [0.6,1.25]s Increase PG4 pre-fill from 30ms to 32ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 13:49:18.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Alternator throws an error. Bearing number two. Have to take a no power shot. |
| Feb 4 2011 02:36:46:527PM | 1110204020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20
Alternator wants to run a shot at 1680RPM, which precludes high-field. SL says go pick up the 2.7T point from earlier. Attempt: Reload shot 10, all segs. Program is 2.7T, 0.6MA. Adjust PG4 pre-fill to 30ms in Seg1. Set nl04 to [0.5e20,0.7e20] from [0.7,1.4]s Load at 4-Feb-2011 14:30:43.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Forgot to have TF start and invert times reset! Oops. Shot went. Funny field behavior, but it went, and there was a decent density scan. Ohmic H-mode at the end. |
| Feb 4 2011 02:57:26:040PM | 1110204021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21
Attempt: 5.4T, 1MA, nl04 from 0.8e20 to 1.0e20 per SL request. Import Seg2 from 1110204019 into Seg2. TF to -150000., extend flattop to 1.6s. | Feb 4 2011 03:28:10:573PM | 1110204023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23.
Attempt: Repeat shot with cryopump on and nl04 ramping down from 0.8e20 to 0.4e20 Set NL04 in Seg2 to [0.9e20, 0.4e20] at [0.7,1.4]s. Set PG4 pre-fill to 62ms, as it was on shot 12. Load at 4-Feb-2011 15:15:40.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Wait for cryopump. Result: Plasma well into rampdown. Density is fairly flat unfortunately. Weird CII bump in startup that seems completely benign. |
| Feb 4 2011 03:40:07:570PM | 1110204024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Alternator vibration issue is for now resolved. Attempt: retry 019. Recover power supply settings from 018. Load shot 019. Increase PG4 pre-fill to 62ms, since cryo is on now. Load at 4-Feb-2011 15:31:02.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Disrupts at 0.5s at 1.08MA. |

Attempt: Retry. PG4 pre-fill to 67ms. Load at 4-Feb-2011 15:52:19.00 Open tree /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: Plasma to 1.76s. Good density ramp. Startup looks good, although Wolfe is very unhappy about the poloidal field program. He says that Seg1 is merely a normal field startup with the TF increased and started earlier. It has propagated down to me via prior high-Bt runs going at least as far back as last December. **Update: smw has revised his statement about the startup. He actually says it is fine, other than that it has a EF4 setpoint which is too low relative to our 5.4T startups. |
