I-mode with lower single null and unfavorable grad-B topology

The purpose of these experiments is to characterize I-mode in lower single null topology with unfavorable grad-B topology. The experiment has several motivations and goals: a) exploit the better power handling capability of the lower divertor to further explore I-mode performance vs. shaping b) determine if the vertical target geometry in the lower divertor leads to consistently better confinement performance and c) document the I-mode power widths and peak heat flux using the better divertor diagnostic set in the lower divertor.

We will build on the success of the previous I-mode campaigns with an emphasis towards the three main goals of the experiment: a) better â??fill outâ?? shaping space of triangularity and elongation b) characterize divertor response in I-mode c) document static and fluctuation features of the core and pedestal plasma during this exploration.

Experiments will all be in counter-clockwise Bt and Ip with LSN x-point topology. We will keep the cryopump cold since it will still be of use since the secondary upper x-point streams outer SOL flux surface into the pump entrance.

1. Establish reference for Ip scan at lower δ 1-3 shots
Reference shape: #1110214018, Ip=0.8 MA, NL04 target ~ 0.7e20.
Bt = 5.8 T
250 ms Prf steps: 2.0, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75
May have to vary target density for I-mode access.
a) Obtain steady I-mode and document heat flux
b) Assess optimal neon seeding for impurity control & measure heat flux.

2. Increase Ip at low low δ 5-6 shots
Same as above but at
i) 1.0 MA NL04~0.8 without neon seeding
ii) 1.0 MA NL04 ~ 0.8 with neon seeding.
iii) 1.25 MA, NL04 ~0.9
iv) 1.25 MA NL04~0.9 with neon seeding
Again may have to tweak target density which generally needs to increase with Ip
Success determined by obtaining sharper I-mode transitions + divertor heat flux
Scan from here on will use optimal neon seeding.
v) Repeat trying to hold I-mode constant throughout shot.

3. Lower triangularity scan at fixed current (I~1.2 MA or TBD) and NL04 and keep upper triangularity as fixed as possible: 5 shots

A successful day in that we saw new aspects of I-mode.
Overall observation: I-mode characteristics at
modest dominant triangularity (0.5) and/or with
vertical target are different than our experiences
at higher dominant triangularity in the upper divertor.

The biggest "success" of the day was seeing a substantial
increase in the power window for I-mode. The best examples
of this are 1 MA, delta~0.5 shots: I-mode was obtained between
2.2 and 3.5 MW, with no H-mode transition. (When the power
was slowly ramped up we ceased to see H-modes in the latter
part of the run day.) This is significant towards demonstrating
I-mode as a viable operating scenario, and (perhaps not
surprisingly) shaping seems to play an important role.
Control room assessment of WCM is that it was at higher
frequency. Also the L-I transition (shot 17 for example)
was qualitatively different: the pedestal T seemed to ratchet
up every sawtooth crash, and after about 5-6 attained its
stationary value. We obtained very good absolute performance
at 1 MA in I-mode: H98~1.1-1.2, pedestal T > 1 keV.
When we did get H-modes they were very high performance
(although transient) with H98 > 1.5 routinely seen and 1e14 n/s.
I-mode was also obtained at 0.8 and 1.25 MA in the standard
LSN shape.

We also saw interesting behavior in the lower triangularity
scan at 1 MA.
a) Moving to lower triangularity, thus moving the
OSP up onto the nose, resulted in disruption-causing
Mo injections, hinting that divertor power loading
is important to that problem.
b) A very surprising result: when
the lower triangularity was bumped up to ~0.6, and the outer
leg moved into the slot, the I-mode disappeared, despite matched
density and ICRF power to delta_Lower~0.5 with the outer leg on
the vertical target. The discharge just stayed in L-mode??

However we faced a learning curve about running in this
configuration; in particular we struggled with Mo injections
for much of the day. The source location
of the injections is not clear. The inner divertor
was significantly more attached than in favorable grad-B.
Also, heat diagnostics at the outer divertor hinted at
very high local heat flux (> GW/m2). As usual some
combination of more density + neon helped. We were far
from optimizing this but ran out of time

We probably lost ~1/3 shots to technical issues like
EF(1?) failure, Marfes and cryopump burps. And ~1/3
to injection caused disruptions. As a result we probably
got ~1/3 -1/2 through run plan.

This was the first reversed field experiment following the bus modifications required for reversed field operation. Some critial work on developement of the discharge for this run was done on 1110214. The latter acquired the basic LSN discharge that we used to start this run. The discharge variations included small changes in density and plasma current. There were significant changes in the lower triangularity in terms of effect on the plasma. Large changes in the upper triangularity were less perturbative.

There were upper and lower triangularity scans. The lower triangularity scan ran into inner and outer noses but seemed to accomplish the SLs basic requirements. Possibly appropriate to make a second attempt at the scan using a higher x-point. In this case, this would have added an additional varying quantity, elongation.

A major problem during the run were the frequent impurity injections. While neon puffing was primarily for control of limiter and divertor loading, it also seemed to reduce the injection of impurities. Some injections caused disruptions. The I-mode experiment should have been quite simple, but the injections were a limit.

The cryo pump was used for the first half of the run. It appeared to have little effect but for some operational problems which resulted in fizzles and delayed shots. It was not used from shot 016 on and its limited effect on the plasma was confirmed. The plasma was LSN, and the cryo is expected to have a stronger effect for USN.

A EFC failures resulted in duds. These were due to a continuing engineering issue.
