| Session Leader Plan for 1110317
MP 649: Scaling of parallel impurity transport with Mi, q95 and vi This run will focus on running L-mode plasmas with large amounts of on-axis D(3He) mode-conversion and D(H) minority heating in order to reach high toroidal rotation speeds (~100 km/s). This run will be done at ~5.1 T with J-ANT at 50 MHz in D(3He) and D+E at 80 MHz for D(H) heating. These plasmas will be used to study the in/out ratio of molybdenum density on a flux surface thought to be driven by centrifugal force by using LBO Mo injections and examing the 2D emissivity distribution using XTOMO and AXUV diode arrays. A LSN plasma will be used since we're in reversed field and want to avoid H-mode. The current/density scans required by MP649 will be completed starting with a favorable target from 1110316 which will optimize mode-conversion flow-drive in I-modes. ***NO OVERNIGHT EC/DC**** GAS SETUP: ========== main-ion: D2 B-SIDE-LOWER: 3.0 psi Ne for seeding as necessary for PFC protection H-BOTTOM: 1.5 psi Ar for HIREXSR NINJA - D2, leave disabled but possible at higher nl04 shots ***3He puffing for ICRF*** ICRF: ========== J at 50 MHz 2-3 MW, D+E 80 MHz at 2-3 MW DIAGNOSTICS: ============ all Te and ne diagnostics (TCI, TS, GPC1, GPC2, FRC). | A very useful day. We got through all of the run plan and had time for a few shots to try for high Te.
Between 1110316 and today I got a current scan from 0.7-1.3 MA by 100 kA at a range of densities and velocities. Now begins the immense amount of data analysis. Shots 001,006 and 022 were locked mode calibration shots. We made the same flub as before on shot 001 that we left the Ne on. We disabled B-SIDE-LOWER for 006 but then forgot to turn it back on. Earl just removed the puff from the target shot for 022. For 002-005 we worked to get back a demonstration shot yesterday, the 1110316019 reference. We then started the Ip and nl04 scans. 007-012 were 0.9 MA, nl04~0.65,0.47 013 was 0.7 MA, nl04~0.5 014-021 and 035-036 were 1.1 MA, nl04~0.95,0.67,0.8 023-034 were 1.3 MA, nl04~1.1,1.2,0.95,0.8,0.7 We had a number of issues with Mo injections, MARFEs and locked modes but not unexpected considering the parameter space we were covering. We had some trouble avoiding I-H transitions and limited the ICRF power coming from D+E. We saw the same issue as yesterday with the rotation hitting a limit and not scaling with the WMHD at the I-mode transition. |

| The machine ran reasonably well today, although there were quite a few early disruptions, mostly associated with natural impurity influxes/injections and/or locked modes. Nevertheless, a good number of high performance I-mode shots were produced, and the session leader run plan was essentially completed, covering 4 plasma currents from 0.7 to 1.3 MA, with density scans at each but the lowest current.
Startups were reliable, with one fizzle, a few bouncers with early hard x-rays, and one shot with late breakdown that nevertheless ramped up. Minor tweaks to prefill and EF4 precharge current were made a couple of times. There was a short delay at the start of the day to resolve an ICRF breaker issue in the hi-yard. The cryo system interface PC had a problem after one of the shots, also causing a short delay. scorecard: Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax(MA),Result Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax,Result | 01 0.632 0.845 Plasma | 02 0.020 0.090 Fizzle | | 03 0.321 0.796 Plasma | 04 0.586 1.001 Plasma | | 05 1.512 1.057 Plasma | 06 1.797 0.806 Plasma | | 07 1.503 0.975 Plasma | 08 0.261 0.707 Plasma | | 09 1.950 0.922 Plasma | 10 1.691 0.923 Plasma | | 11 1.954 0.921 Plasma | 12 1.955 0.917 Plasma | | 13 1.950 0.719 Plasma | 14 1.535 1.138 Plasma | | 15 1.748 1.109 Plasma | 16 1.292 1.177 Plasma | | 17 0.615 1.137 Plasma | 18 1.607 1.117 Plasma | | 19 0.678 1.150 Plasma | 20 1.008 1.171 Plasma | | 21 1.951 1.119 Plasma | 22 1.861 0.804 Plasma | | 23 0.618 0.994 Plasma | 24 1.746 1.305 Plasma | | 25 1.747 1.286 Plasma | 26 1.535 1.304 Plasma | | 27 0.682 1.219 Plasma | 28 0.574 1.138 Plasma | | 29 1.488 1.380 Plasma | 30 0.582 1.124 Plasma | | 31 0.413 0.903 Plasma | 32 1.954 1.307 Plasma | | 33 0.826 1.350 Plasma | 34 0.816 1.368 Plasma | | 35 1.944 1.113 Plasma | 36 1.548 1.113 Plasma | 35 plasmas 1 fizzle 36 data cycles |

| Mar 16 2011 05:11:14:733PM | Matt Reinke | reconsidered the overnight ECDC
perform ECDC as done for 1110316 | |
| Mar 17 2011 09:24:56:893AM | 1110317001 | Matt Reinke | load the 1110316019 target with some tweaks to check machine/RF status
D+E start at 1.0 LBO injectionst at 0.85 and 1.25 ***need to wait for J-ANT to warm up*** instead run the locked mode (no ICRF/no injections) loaded from 1110316021 RESULT: the Ne went in, forgot to disable B-SIDE-LOWER, early disruption. No locked mode. NEXT: move to ICRF target shot, turn on LBO |
| Mar 17 2011 09:32:18:217AM | 1110317002 | Matt Reinke | load the 1110316019 target with some tweaks to check machine/RF status
D+E start at 1.0 LBO injectionst at 0.85 and 1.25 RESULT: fizzle NEXT: retry |
| Mar 17 2011 09:53:21:263AM | 1110317003 | Matt Reinke | retry the ICRF target
RESULT: early disruption at ~0.3. Looks like there was an Fe injection. AXUV diodes and the hailstorm on the LH camera suggest it came from the A-PORT area. NEXT: repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 10:04:14:857AM | 1110317004 | Matt Reinke | still trying for target
RESULT: early MARFE and disruption, Ar screams up and is ~x2 of the target shot. NEXT: reduce Ar (50 V) and repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 10:23:46:767AM | 1110317005 | Matt Reinke | trying for target shot
RESULT: good repeat of ICRF example from 1110316. the target density reaches the same prior to the ICRF turn on then density rises a bit higher. The 0.85 injection is clean but the 1.25 was into the ~H-mode. NEXT: run the locked mode shot and then start the scans in the SL_PLAN |
| Mar 17 2011 10:39:14:260AM | 1110317006 | Matt Reinke | try for the HIREXSR locked mode calibration shot
RESULT: great locked mode, velocity decays to ~+4 km/s so we're in good absolute velocity calibration NEXT: begin Ip/nl04 scans from SL_PLAN Ip=0.9, nl04=0.5 |
| Mar 17 2011 10:56:00:500AM | 1110317007 | Matt Reinke | start the Ip/nl04 scan 0.9 MA, nl04=0.5
also put 70 V on the Ne puff. Forgot that I increased the pressure to give me some headroom at higher Ip RESULT: good RF but very poor density control also the Mo LBO's weren't significant NEXT: repeat with improved LBO, also increase Ar to 70 V to try and increase signal during ICRF pulse |
| Mar 17 2011 11:08:30:903AM | 1110317008 | Matt Reinke | retry the 900 kA shot
RESULT: early injections, Mo and Fe NEXT: repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 11:24:32:523AM | 1110317009 | Matt Reinke | Ip=0.9, nl04=0.5 target
RESULT: still bad LBO and had some large unauthorized Mo injections NEXT: repeat w/o D+E to try and remove big injections (from limiter heating?) |
| Mar 17 2011 11:31:43:407AM | 1110317010 | Matt Reinke | Ip=0.9, nl04=0.5 w/o D+E
RESULT: nice steady plasma, the 0.85 injection is polluted but the 1.25 is good NEXT: increase nl04 to 0.7 |
| Mar 17 2011 11:44:29:823AM | 1110317011 | Matt Reinke | Ip=0.9, nl04=0.7
RESULT: LBO's are right after the ICRF so we didn't get clean data NEXT: repeat but add another LBO at 1.05 to make sure data is collected |
| Mar 17 2011 11:54:43:587AM | 1110317012 | Matt Reinke | Ip=0.9,nl04=0.7
also noticed that we've been w/o the Ne puff since we did the LM (006) that might be what's causing some of the Mo problems. Will re-enable when going to high current. RESULT: good shot w/ 2 of the LBO's clean NEXT: move to lowest current point, Ip=0.7 and nl04=0.5 |
| Mar 17 2011 12:10:30:173PM | 1110317013 | Matt Reinke | Ip=0.7 and nl04=0.5
RESULT: got two good Mo LBO NEXT: up to the high Ip points |
| Mar 17 2011 12:23:08:620PM | 1110317014 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1 MA, nl04=0.9
re-enable Ne puff and use the ICRF waveform from 009 NINJA firing at 1.1 seconds reducing back to 0.85 and 1.25 Mo LBO's RESULT: good injection at 0.85, but get an H-mode during the 2nd ICRF pulse NEXT: lower D+E power |
| Mar 17 2011 12:35:43:477PM | 1110317015 | Matt Reinke | repeat shot w/ lower D+E power (3.9 MW total w/ J) to avoid I/H transition
RESULT: the 2nd LBO injection is once again masked by an unauthorized Mo. NEXT: lower D+E again to 3.5 |
| Mar 17 2011 12:48:08:097PM | 1110317016 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1, nl04=0.9, lower D+E to avoid H-mode
increase to x3 LBO's at 0.85, 1.15 and 1.35 to try and make up for my terrible luck with injections RESULT: early disruption, but the 1.15 injection is clean so move on NEXT: Ip=1.1, nl04=0.7 |
| Mar 17 2011 01:03:20:580PM | 1110317017 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1, nl04=0.7
turn NINJA off, same ICRF pulse RESULT: locked mode ~ 0.48 NEXT: Have the PO tweak the nl04/ip ramp part of the shot and repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 01:18:21:197PM | 1110317018 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1,nl04=0.7
repeat w/ PO magical fixes RESULT: good shot, two of the LBO's are good NEXT: lower the target density to 0.5 |
| Mar 17 2011 01:26:39:030PM | 1110317019 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1, nl04=0.5
RESULT: hit a locked mode and early disruption NEXT: move back up to nl04 to avoid the locked mode, increase the ICRF power to increase the temperature to lower the collisionality |
| Mar 17 2011 01:40:36:883PM | 1110317020 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1, nl04=0.7 but w/ increased D+E ICRF heating
RESULT: disruption at ~1 sec due to a Mo injection that started just before D+E came on NEXT: repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 01:55:31:433PM | 1110317021 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.1,nl04=0.7
RESULT: got two of the LBO's on this one, end of 1.1 MA shots NEXT: locked mode shot, then move to 1.3 MA |
| Mar 17 2011 02:02:08:370PM | 1110317022 | Matt Reinke | locked mode shot for HIREXSR calibration
RESULT: good locked mode, voffset ~ +5 km/s NEXT: move to 1.3 MA, nl04~1.1 |
| Mar 17 2011 02:16:37:980PM | 1110317023 | Matt Reinke | move to higher current portion of the run, start at high nl04 work toward locked mode level
Ip=1.3, nl04=1.1 enable NINJA RESULT: early MARFE and disruption in current ramp, looks like nl04 is too high too early NEXT: PO adjustment of density rise and repeat |
| Mar 17 2011 02:35:25:390PM | 1110317024 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.3, nl04=1.1
have J-ANT start at 0.5 seconds to assist RESULT: ICRF a little ratty and got a number of Mo injections and an H-mode in the 2nd pulse NEXT: repeat Ip=1.3 and nl04=1.1 with some tweaks |
| Mar 17 2011 02:44:04:903PM | 1110317025 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.3, nl04=1.1
increase the Ip ramp slightly so flattop starts at 0.9 D+E reduce power and start at 1.1 LBO at 1.0 and 1.3 RESULT: looks like I didn't get I-mode, density too high NEXT: move to lower nl04 |
| Mar 17 2011 02:57:12:970PM | 1110317026 | Matt Reinke | Ip=1.3, nl04=0.9
