MP: CXRS calibration via beam into helium gas. Verify performance of MSE filters. SL: Rowan, Liao PO: Scott Initial setup Reference shot 1100901031. Load helium into B-Top at a pressure of 6 psi. Use at least three fill and purge cycles to remove remnant of previous fill gas. Control the gas using the wave form for PG4 in segment 1. Turn off all power supplies as no fields will be used in this run. Set the fizzle detector past 2.0 s. Set the gate valve to close during the shot. Set the beam for 100 ms on 100 ms off. Note the temporal variation of beam current and voltage and assure that integration time for detector is sufficiently short that times of non-constant beam parameters are acquired but may be left out of the averaging. For the first shot, the pressure will be set in the 10e-5 Torr range (50 ms) as it would be for helium fueling of a plasma shot. This will be a shorter setting for PG4 than is initially loaded. The pressure will be scanned up in coarse increments until 4713 He I line is observable with at least 1000 counts above the detector background. The increments will be determined on the fly during the run. 5 shots. Adjust beam timing and detector synchronization to optimize signal. 1 shot. Repeat for statistics. 3 shots. Scan the helium pressure up by approximately a factor of 5 to document any beam attenuation. Check the scaling of the signal level with pressure. Repeat with different pressures in the event of anomalies. 5-10 shots. Reset the helium pressure in the torus to approximately 2 mT (gas control set to approx 1 s). 3 shots With the pressure in the torus set to approximately 2 mT, measure MSE signal level in spatial channel #2 as a function of filter. Changing the filter is expected to require 5-10 minutes. 10 shots. With the pressure in the torus set to approximately 2 mT, measure the MSE signal level in spatial channel #2 as a function of filter temperature for a single filter. 5 shots |

Control gas using waveform for PG4 in segment 1. Set fizzle detector past 2.0 sec. Set gate value to close during the shot. We will start with a very small gas puff, sufficient to get roughly 10^-5 torr. Fire DNB, 100 ms on, 100 ms off. On successive shots, raise torus pressure until CXRS observes about 1000 counts above background. Then raise pressure another factor of 5, to document beam attenuation. Then proceed to 15 shots for MSE, at approximately 1-2 mTorr. There will be about 10 minutes between shots to allow MSE to swap optical filters. |

| The purpose of the experiment is to intensity calibrate the CXRS diagnostic for helium impurity measurements, helium fast ion measurments, or helium plasma measurements by observing the emission from the interaction between the beam and helium gas.
For these experiments, the beam was fired into a helium filled vacuum vessel. The pressure was varied from approximately 0.1 mT to 6 mT. Useful data was acquired for all channels over at least a subset of the pressure scan range; that is, the most sensitive channels acquired data at all pressures. The least sensitive channels did acquire useful signals for the higher pressures. A channel to channel relative intensity calibration of the channels will result from this experiment. |

| Mar 18 2011 09:45:39:963AM | 1110318004 | Ken Liao | Shot with 375ms puff shows about 1/2 the intensity of previous, in core channel B11. No obvious beam attenuation.
Next shot, got to 1500ms puff |
| Mar 18 2011 09:52:58:853AM | 1110318005 | Ken Liao | about 800 counts on B11 (brightest), 70-80 counts on B13 (darkest)
Next shot, go to 3000ms puff. |
| Mar 18 2011 10:08:02:633AM | 1110318006 | Ken Liao | Beam on wall signal is visibly weaker in wide2.
Signal levels on core B11 are about 1400 counts. This is clearly attenuated. Near edge channel B13 peak around 100 counts, also clearly attenuated. Next shot 2s |
