Run plan: 1110323
MP624: Measurements of Mode Converted Waves in D-He3 Plasmas with Phase Contrast Imaging

Bt: 5.4-5.8 T
Ip: 0.6-1.4 MA
nl04 ~ 0.6-1.2e20 m^-2

Working Gas Species: D2
Boronization Requested: No
Standard ECDC Overnight

Diagnostics:
Standard profile measurements, PCI, ECE

--

The goal is to have measurements in steady rf heated plasmas, with high He3 fraction and on axis mode conversion. Run J antenna at different power levels to see if there is any optimum for mode conversion. Switch to He4 plasma later in the day for CXRS calibration.

--

1. Start from higher He3 fraction. 150 ms He3 puff, 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, nl04 = 0.9e20 m^-2, LSN. Switch to USN once He3/e ~ 0.3. He3 puff would need to be increased to 200-300 ms. Increase Bt as necessary for mode conversion layer ~ 0.69 m. RF waveforms:

180:0.50-0.95 s, +90:1.00-1.45 s, 0.5 MW
-90:0.50-0.95 s, 180:1.00-1.45 s, 0.5 MW
*180:0.50-1.45 s, 1.0 MW
+90:0.50-1.45 s, 1.0 MW
-90:0.50-1.45 s, 1.0 MW
180:0.50-1.45 s, 1.8 MW
180:0.50-1.45 s, 2.5 MW

2. Reduce He3 puff to 150 ms, 100 ms, then 70 ms. Use the rf waveform*.

3. Lower density
Use the rf waveform* with nl04 = 0.6e20 m^-2

4. Switch to He4 plasma. Run at He3/e ~ 0.1 for energetic He3 tail generation.

He3/e - Bt for resonance @ 0.69 m
0.10 - 5.2 T
0.15 - 5.4 T
0.20 - 5.6 T
0.25 - 5.7 T
0.30 - 5.9 T

We got the desired concentration (He3/e ~ 0.25) around shot 7. The fluctuation intensity was about an order of magnitude lower than it was expected to be. Density has been somewhat low compared to the previous 8T, low fraction run, which might have affected the mode conversion efficiency. Although sensitivity to density dependence at this parameter regime is not clear from analytic IBW mode conversion theory, some insight might be obtained through numerical means.

Relative concentration change seen by PCI and CXRS seem to deviate while scanning the He3 concentration down. If the actual concentration is lower than what is seen by PCI, which will make the two measurements consistent, it might help to resolve some of the discrepancy between the PCI measurements and the simulation.

The last few shots were run in He4 for CXRS calibration. Small mode conversion was seen around He3/e ~ 0.11.

The machine ran relatively well today, with most plasmas going full length.

Startups were robust, with the exception of some minor bounces that went away
and one instance where something seemed to fall in during startup (shot 18).
There were also a handful of early disruptions caused by injections that
occurred around the OH1 crossover time.

Most of the discharges were D main ion, and many had large concentrations of
He3 (n_He3/n_e up to 25%, according to SL). Beginning on shot 28 we switched
over both B-main and B-top to He4 and loaded a He startup from February
(1110207005). This started up with no difficulty.

**Note to future PO's: My LSN shots in D2 used Segment 3, and my USN shots in
D2 used Segment 2. My He shots used Segment 2.

An important observation today was a large number of magnetics baseline offset
warnings, accompanied by a considerable amount of pick-up induced by RF on many
magnetics signals, including BTOR. See Steve Wolfe's entries under the MHD
topic for details. These offsets were not severe enough to prevent normal operation.

On the final shot (032) I extended the TF to 2s to assist Orso Meneghini in
making a rampdown measurement, and had the fizzle detector set earlier in order
to reduce the length of the TF pulses.

Total cycles: 32
Tests: 0
Plasmas into rampdown: 28
Early disruptions: 4
Fizzles: ZERO
Duds: ZERO

Mar 23 2011 09:22:23:777AM1110323001Naoto TsujiiLSN, 150 ms He3 puff. Good signal. He3/e ~ 0.14 - 0.1.
Mar 23 2011 09:29:06:510AM1110323002Naoto TsujiiOnly slightly higher He3 fraction, signal ok.

Next: Increase He3 puff to 200 ms, +90 phasing first.

Mar 23 2011 09:57:56:683AM1110323004Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.17 - 0.11.

Next: -90 phasing first.
Mar 23 2011 10:13:14:753AM1110323005Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.19 - 0.12.

Next: 250 ms puff, Bt to 5.6 T.
Mar 23 2011 10:52:40:550AM1110323006Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.19. Still not high enough concentration.

Next: 300 ms puff, +90 phasing.

Mar 23 2011 10:52:51:173AM1110323007Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.21. This should be high enough concentration. Move to power scan.

Next: 1.2 MW, turn off at 1.0, 1.3 s.

Mar 23 2011 11:01:59:840AM1110323008Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.24. Similar signal intensity with power doubled. Concentration is higher for this shot, so MC is expected to be larger, if anything.
Mar 23 2011 11:10:07:290AM1110323009Naoto TsujiiRepeat. He3/e ~ 0.24. Signal is very similar to the previous shot, both in terms of intensity and resonance location (He3 fraction).
Mar 23 2011 11:41:24:020AM1110323011Naoto TsujiiSignal different, but not clear if there is any qualitative change.
Mar 23 2011 12:24:50:277PM1110323012Naoto Tsujii1.8 MW. No obvious change in the fluctuation intensity.
Mar 23 2011 12:57:39:130PM1110323015Naoto Tsujii2.5 MW. H-mode at 0.7 s. Signal larger in H-mode, maybe due to higher density.
Mar 23 2011 01:27:24:460PM1110323017Naoto Tsujii1.5 MW. Signal may be increasing as the density increases towards the end of the flattop.
May 27 2011 12:37:38:660AM1110323020Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.17-0.11. Density increases towards the end, but He3 fraction is too low there.
Mar 23 2011 02:30:40:963PM1110323021Naoto TsujiiDensity is higher, but He3 fraction too low.

Next: Move on to concentration scan.
Mar 23 2011 02:44:27:933PM1110323022Naoto TsujiiUSN, nl04 ~ 0.8e20. Steady He3 fraction around 0.17.
Mar 23 2011 03:00:35:693PM1110323023Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.17. Reduction of the concentration from the previous shot seems to be small despite half the puff time.
Mar 23 2011 03:17:00:797PM1110323024Naoto TsujiiStill He3/e ~ 0.16.
Mar 23 2011 03:25:23:753PM1110323025Naoto TsujiiNo He3 puff. He3/e ~ 0.14.
Mar 23 2011 03:39:36:977PM1110323026Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.13.
May 27 2011 12:55:24:853AM1110323027Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.12, 70% of shot 22. CXRS seems to see about a factor 3 difference between the two shots.
Mar 23 2011 04:23:30:113PM1110323028Naoto TsujiiHe4 plasma. He3/e ~ 0.12. PCI signal looks similar to the previous one.
Mar 23 2011 04:52:04:767PM1110323029Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.10. Mode conversion is weaker.
Mar 23 2011 04:52:37:887PM1110323030Naoto TsujiiHe3/e ~ 0.10. Mode conversion very weak.
Mar 23 2011 05:00:57:327PM1110323031Naoto Tsujii100 ms puff. He3/e ~ 0.12. Mode conversion came back up a little.
