This a 5.4T, 900kA ELMy H-mode shot. nl04 demand is 4e19 before the H-mode, and is raised to 8e19 at 1s as a safety net, in case the plasma drops out of H-mode at high power. Enable diagnositc Ar puff: 25ms at 0.3s. Operate D+E from 0.7 to 1.5s at 2--3MW. Establish a clean H-mode. Seed if necessary with Ne. 3--4 shots (2) Reduce flattop Bt to 3.4T. Set Ip to 700kA. Heat with J-port from 0.7 to 1.5s. Begin with power ramps from 1MW up to max available. Tailor the power profile as needed to obtain good H-modes with ELMs. Several shots will likely be needed to condition J and get the density down. Reduce Ip if q appears to be too low. 5--6 shots (3) Program 2 RF power steps from J: ~2MW from [0.7,1.1]s and maximum available from [1.1,1.5]s. Run this discharge with initial nl04 of 5e19, first with Ip~0.7MA and then with Ip=0.56MA. The second Ip point should match q95 on 1101214029. Repeat this sequence until the actual density is as low (or lower) than demanded, or until we give up. 10--12 shots (4) If it looks desirable, obtain some of the cases in (3) with higher programed density, say 6.5e19 and 8.0e19. 3--5 shots (5) If we are not too terribly plagued with prompt ion losses or other limiter damaging phenomena at low current, then choose an interesting condition obtained above and re-run the shot with Ip decreased to 0.4MA. 2--3 shots (6) If interesting ELMy conditions are obtained at 3.4T, then attempt to run at 2.7T with 2nd harmonic D(H) heating using D+E at 80MHz. Repeat some low current points from above. 3â??-5 shots (7) If there is time left over, set Bt to 5.5T and run some matched-q95 discharges with D+E. |

| A very productive run day for studying ELMs and pedestal physics at low magnetic field (3.5T). Many thanks to everyone involved.
It was surprisingly easy to achieve low density ELMing plasmas at 3.5T in the usual JFT-2M shape. The expected problems achieving sufficiently low collisionality (density) at 3.5T were not evident, as the first attempt at 3.5T (shot 8) achieved steady ELMing periods. A successful current scan produced ELMing discharges at three values of Ip, 700kA (eg shot 8, 12, 25, 31, 32), 560kA (shots 17-19), and 440kA (shot 34). Density and power scans were also conducted at 700kA and 560kA, with a good range of density achieved at 700kA. At higher densities, the ELMs go away as expected. There are several timeslices noted in the log that should be useful for analysis and comparison to models such as EPED. It appeared early in the day that ELMs might be going away due to ramped up RF power (eg 24), but it was later found (shot 25) that starting at high power and then reducing it produced ELMs at high power. It appears that back transitions to L-mode, which sometimes occur at around 1-1.1s, cause a change in plasma conditions that tends to make steady ELMing conditions difficult to achieve afterward. However, cause and effect is not clear here, and requires further study. It is also not completely clear in all cases whether observed ELMs are Type I or Type III. There are many interesting observations of a variety of moderate to high frequency fluctuations in these discharges. In some cases these fluctuations are observed to onset shortly before ELMs, and may potentially play a role in constraining the evolution of pedestal profiles. It would be interesting to study the fluctuation data from this day in detail. The conditioning phase of the day ended with a very nice shot at 5.4T, 900kA (shot 6), with a very long steady ELMing period, that is also a good candidate for analysis. Combining with earlier days at 5.4T and 8T should provide a good scan of Bt in ELMing H-modes over a factor of more than 2, in plasmas with a range of current, density, and power. |

The purpose of this run was to expand the C-Mod data set in ELMy H-mode to reduced values of magnetic field (3.5T in this case to utilize on-axis fundamental D(H) heating with J-port at 50MHz). These data were needed to complete a comparison of C-Mod results to the predictions of the EPED model for pedestal width, and to provide information about whether pedestal width shows any scaling with normalized machine gryroradius. This run contributes directly to the FY11 FES JRT in Pedestal Physics, and Phil Snyder (GA) co-led the session remotely. The run also had the participation of ITPA collaborators Tom Osborne (GA), Marc Beurskens (CCFE) and Lorenzo Frassinetti (KTH-Stockholm). The main goals of this experiment were accomplished. We began by reproducing a low-elongation, high lower trangularity ELMy H-mode case from a December experiment, using 80MHz ICRF from D and E-port for central heating at 5.5T. Recovery from boronization was relatively quick, although it was deemed advisable to seed with Ne after the initial shots showed signs of severe hot spots in the divertor, and occasional injections. An ELMy H-mode similar to the target shot was obtained on shot 006, after which we lowered the field to 3.5T for the remainder of the day. We easily obtained ELMy H-mode at the 5/8 field, as early as shot 008. Then we spent the remainder of the day attempting to very power and density at Ip of 700kA (008--013, 023--031), 560kA (014, 015, 017--019, 032, 033) and 440kA (020--022, 034). Some ELMs were obtained at all three of these currents, with QCM activity more prevalent at the lower currents. Generally, pedestal profile data were very good, and this data set should be very good for EPED analysis and stability calculations. Jim Terry got some good data with the GPI in He, showing some ELM precursors, and filament propagation. Cornwall Lau got some reflectometry data which may be good for looking at L-H transitions and/or ELM transients. Lots of interesting stuff was reported on magnetics by David Pace, and Arturo Dominguez saw lots of intriguing signatures in the O-mode reflectometry looking at the pedestal, including changes in the quasi-coherent modes around the time of ELMs. Thanks to all these dedicated diagnosticians for making this a successful run. On the last 3 shots, the DNB was operated in deuterium, so that the DNB/MSE teams could use the excess neutrons to evaluate the neutral current in the plasma. See the SL_SUMMARY by Snyder for more info. |

| Mar 25 2011 09:16:11:940AM | 1110325001 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 1. Attempt: Load 1101214029 and fire up D+E. Result: J-port was fired too. Need to turn that off for next shot. Ohmic density looks reasonably low. Density screams up after RF come on. |
| Mar 25 2011 09:55:49:243AM | 1110325002 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 2. Attempt: Retry without J. Result: D and E run clean at ~1.5MW, L-mode Nasty injections from the divertor slot, from the vicinity of H-J-K, as we've seen in the past. Enable Ne seeding on next shot. WIDE2 looks good again. Thanks, JT! |
| Mar 25 2011 09:56:28:463AM | 1110325003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3.
Attempt: Retry with some Ne seeding. Result: H-modes, No killer injections. Ohmic target desnity looks good. Relatively clean pedestal profiles. Not a lot of SOL coverage. ne,ped is >2e20. Kind of high. First ELM comes at 0.92s. There appear to be others in later H-mode phases of the discharge. |
| Mar 25 2011 09:58:27:460AM | 1110325004 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 4.
Retry with a little more power Result: Early locked mode and high Prad. No good H-modes |
| Mar 25 2011 10:04:01:770AM | 1110325005 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 5.
Attempt: Fix early density drop and repeat. Result: Much improved. 5 H-modes. MLR reports plenty of Ar, Ne in the H-modes. ne,ped is touching 2.3e20. |
| Mar 25 2011 10:29:46:477AM | 1110325006 | Phil Snyder | Very nice ELMing discharge at standard Bt. Some RF drop outs, but several good ELMing periods. Go to low Bt for next shot. |
| Mar 25 2011 10:32:30:907AM | 1110325006 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 6.
Attempt: Reduced Ar, Ne. Result: A great ELMy H-mode shot. Steady H-mode, plenty of ELMs. Decent pedestal coverage. ne,ped is still still above 2e20. Pedestal Te looks reasonably high. |
| Mar 25 2011 10:36:26:460AM | 1110325007 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 7.
Attempt: First attempt at 3.4T, 700kA Result: Early disruption, PF breaker pull. Power supply issue? |
| Mar 25 2011 10:50:54:300AM | 1110325008 | Phil Snyder | Successful ELMing shot at 3.5T. Pedestal density appears to have come down slightly, and pedestal pressure is down, as expected. |
| Mar 25 2011 10:57:27:167AM | 1110325008 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 8.
Attempt: Retry Result: ELMs on the first 3.5 attempt! J-port coming up, tolerating ELMs. ne,ped slightly lower than in the higher-field case. Modest Te,ped in evidence. q95~3.1 |
| Mar 25 2011 11:18:55:593AM | 1110325009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9.
Attempt: Repeat with power steps Result: 2 phases of either ELMy H-mode or very rapid dithers to L-mode phases preceding H-L transitions. |
| Mar 25 2011 11:28:30:737AM | 1110325009 | Phil Snyder | ELMs in bursts - some may be back-transitions. May not be an ideal shot for pedestal analysis. |
| Mar 25 2011 11:42:46:397AM | 1110325010 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 10.
Attempt: Repeat with more ICRF demand, reduced Ne. Result: Two H-mode phases at different density. ELMs are interspersed. We continue to see the weakly coherent stuff at 200-300kHz prior to ELM onset, as Arturo pointed out on shot 8. Nothing regular in evidence. A surprising locked mode shows up at 1.3s |
| Mar 25 2011 12:23:08:740PM | 1110325011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11.
Attempt: Repeat Result: H-modes, mostly ELM-free. A few ELM-like events are seen between 1.1s and 1.35s, but the input power is not very steady. |
| Mar 25 2011 11:59:08:923AM | 1110325012 | Phil Snyder | Steady ELMing period from ~0.85-1.1s. Pedestal density stays low and fairly steady (~1.7e20). |
| Mar 25 2011 12:24:17:240PM | 1110325012 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 12.
Attempt: Flat RF 1MW. Result: A decent ELM-free phase, followed by ELMy phase in the first H-mode. Low input power seems to be a key ingredient. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:28:10:360PM | 1110325013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13.
Attempt: Lower power scan. Result: ELMs and dithers. High Prad in the 2nd half of the flattop. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:29:44:780PM | 1110325013 | Phil Snyder | Lower RF power to 600kW ramping up to 800kW. Initial ELMs followed by dithering period. No steady H-mode achieved at this power.
Very interesting mode seen on the reflectometry preceding the early ELMs. Possible candidate for K(R)BM. Next shot: Move on to lower current, Ip=560kA. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:34:46:367PM | 1110325014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14.
Attempt: Ip=560kA. Result: Got the conditions we wanted. q95~3.7. H-mode triggered after 1s. No clear ELMs. Should try for more power. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:44:15:677PM | 1110325015 | Phil Snyder | Series of back-transitions, with no ELMing H-Mode. Try staying at the same RF power, but reducing neon & argon, to see if we can slow radiated power rise. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:51:14:717PM | 1110325015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15.
Attempt: A little more ICRF power Result: Multiple H-modes. Prad rise is fairly swift in each. QCM is in evidence now, but is not giving rise to a steady H-mode. |
| Mar 25 2011 12:51:51:090PM | 1110325016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16.
Attempt: Retry with no Ne, less Ar Result: Dud. |
| Mar 25 2011 01:11:19:167PM | 1110325017 | Phil Snyder | Nearly steady ELMing period from ~0.95-1.15s. Pedestal density and temperature are fairly low, as expected at this Ip and Bt. |
| Mar 25 2011 01:21:04:833PM | 1110325017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17.
Attempt: Retry 15 with no Ne, less Ar Result: Multiple H-modes with some big H-alpha spikes preceding the H-L transition. Looks similar to shot 009, at the higher Ip. These ELMs seem to onset when the Te,ped drops _below_ some criticla value. Because we turned off the Ne, this shot has a lower radiated power fraction, so higher net power. Seems like we should go up in power for next shot. |
| Mar 25 2011 01:26:27:543PM | 1110325018 | Phil Snyder | Fairly steady ELMing period from ~0.88-1.05s. Pedestal density and temperature low as expected, pressure very roughly 8kPa. |
| Mar 25 2011 01:37:18:310PM | 1110325018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Attempt: Repeat with more power. Result: Some ELMs intermixed with QCM, as on shot 017. |
| Mar 25 2011 01:47:31:703PM | 1110325019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19.
Attempt: Increased power yet again. Result: Long H-mode with slow density rise. Pedestal desnity doesn't come up to the level of the previous shot until about 1s. Shortly after that, there seems to be an ELM. . . Increased RF power just doesn't seem to get us ELMs today. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:15:42:860PM | 1110325020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20.
Attempt: Reduce Ip to 440kA, 1MW flat from J-port Result: Somewhat steady EDA H-mode starting at 0.75s. Density pedestal is down at the 1.5e20 level or below and seems wider at this low Ip. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:18:10:230PM | 1110325021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21.
Attempt: Repeat 20 without the large programed increase in nl04 feedback at 1s. Result: H-mode doesn't last any longer than on 020. J-port has a number of faults. Will try for more power anyway. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:31:59:927PM | 1110325022 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 22.
Attempt: More power. Result: Yijun coaxes 1.75MW out of J. EDA H-mode, no ELMs. A dramatic injection kills the discharge at 0.92s. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:39:37:980PM | 1110325023 | Phil Snyder | Repeat of shot 8 with no neon. Steady ELMing period, as in shot 8, from ~0.8-1.1s. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:45:29:563PM | 1110325023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23
Attempt: Repeat Shot 8, though with no Ne and 25ms Ar pulse. Result: Ohmic density matches that on shot 008, but the pedestal density is considerably lower. ELMs are higher frequency. Density begins to rise concurrent with the disappearance of the rapid ELMs around 1.1s. Cause/effect? This about the same time that the NINJA is puffing and the RF is ramping. For next shot let's have the RF ramp 100ms sooner and have NINJA puff 100ms later. |
| Mar 25 2011 02:58:35:693PM | 1110325024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24
Attempt: Ramping power in the 700kA, 3.5T case. Result: ELMs continue to disappear at the higher powers, and the ELM-free periods show considerable rate of rise in density, Prad. There seems to be a very narrow window in power for these ELMs. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:08:52:387PM | 1110325025 | Phil Snyder | Interesting shot. The RF waveform is reversed, with high power first and then lower power. Steady ELM period from ~0.9-1s at 2MW, and then another steady ELM period from ~1.1-1.25s at the lower power ~1MW. Clearly indicates that low power is not a requirement for getting ELMs, but there do seem to be differences between the early and later phases of the discharge. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:12:57:563PM | 1110325025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25.
Attempt: Start at high power and then reduce. Result: Interesting shot. Putting 2MW in early seems to work just fine at triggering ELMs. Confinement is good early on, and then very regular ELMs onset at 0.88s. Confinement is poorer in the ELMy phase Subsequent H-modes exhibit a similar pattern, with gradual confinement degradation throughout the shot. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:17:55:460PM | 1110325026 | Phil Snyder | Steady ELMing period from ~0.85-1.05s. Should be a good case for analysis.
After 1.05s there is an RF cutout and back-transition, and the 2nd H-mode is different from the 1st. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:19:20:890PM | 1110325026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26
Attempt: Maintain flat RF and try to prolong the ELMy H-mode. Initial H-mode looks great. Lots of ELMs after 0.845s., very regular. RF trip at 1.07s seems to lead to a back-transition from which we do not recover another good ELMy H-mode. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:29:09:503PM | 1110325027 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 27.
Attempt: Raise nl04 demand from 5e19 to 6.5e19. Result: ne,ped came up. ELMS went away. J-port at 2MW with a few faults. |
| Mar 25 2011 03:45:39:387PM | 1110325028 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 28.
Attempt: lower density at fixed power Results: Beautiful shot with low, steady H-mode density and lots of ELMs. But no Thomson. Have to retake it. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:00:18:407PM | 1110325029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29
Attempt: Repeat 28 with Thomson. Result: Shot starts out the same, except for a small excess in Prad at 0.777s. I think the first ELM knocks out the RF. Again, once the RF faults and tries to recover into a new H-mode, there seems to be no getting back the nice ELMs. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:00:59:277PM | 1110325029 | Phil Snyder | Unfortunately, not a great repeat of shot 28. Get 3 back-transitions early on, and an ELMing period later, but presumably with conditions altered by the back transitions. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:11:09:303PM | 1110325030 | Phil Snyder | Early steady ELM period from ~0.78-1.0s, but short-lived. Very low pedestal density during ELMing phase. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:14:36:667PM | 1110325030 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 30.
Attempt: Repeat 28 with no RF trip, Thomson. Result: There is an RF trip at 0.76, but it does not prevent the reformation of ELMy H-mode. The density in the first H-mode ends up being lower than on shot 28, and the ELMs are higher frequency. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:21:22:843PM | 1110325031 | Phil Snyder | Good shot. Steady ELMing period at very low pedestal density (~1.2e20), from ~0.8-1.15s. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:31:27:690PM | 1110325031 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 31.
Attempt: Repeat 28 with no RF trip, Thomson. Result: More high frequency ELMs in a low density H-mode, followed by later H-mode with lower frequency ELMs. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:37:14:543PM | 1110325032 | Phil Snyder | Current back down to 0.56MA. Early injection at ~.78s, followed by a fairly steady ELMing period from ~0.86-1.04s. Low pedestal density ~1.1e20. |
| Mar 25 2011 04:40:38:453PM | 1110325032 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 32
Attempt: 560kA, nl04~3e19 Result: Low density ELMy H-mode followed by a moderate density H-mode. Last H-mode appears solidly EDA. . . He puff assisted? |
| Mar 25 2011 04:50:22:457PM | 1110325033 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 33
Attempt: Repeat shot 32 with no He NINJA puff, and no injection early in H-mode, and with Thomson, and with steady RF . . . Result: Decent ELMy period from 0.92 to 1.06, with ELM frequency changing as other plasma parameters like density change. |
| Mar 25 2011 05:10:42:530PM | 1110325034 | Phil Snyder | Good shot with ELMs at very low current, Ip~0.44MA. Steady ELM period from t~0.8-1.02s.
Interesting fluctuations on the magnetics and reflectomer. Appears between ELMs and then transitions smoothly into QC mode. |
| Mar 25 2011 05:22:29:580PM | 1110325034 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 34
Attempt: Ip to 440kA, density reduced from shots 20--22. 1MW from J. Result: This worked well. Nice regular ELMing period between 0.8s and 1.05s. Profiles look great. Arturo has nice stuff. Everybody's got a warm buzz. |

| Mar 25 2011 09:12:04:473AM | 1110325001 | Steve Scott | Changes from reference shot 1101214029:
1) increase early NeL demand from 4.0e19 to 5.0e19 2) decrease argon puff to 25 ms result: PRF = 1-2 MW, ratty waveforms. plasma disrupts at 1.08 sec We got some power from J antenna, despite lack of He3 puffing. Got quite a large density increase (to 1.4e20) during RF. |
| Mar 25 2011 09:29:59:600AM | 1110325002 | Steve Scott | physOp changes from previous shot: increase Argon puff from 25 ms to 80 ms.
