For last two hours of run: MP647a Note: 1-2 shots before start of this part of the expt, we will turn the MSE filter temperatures to their minimum. 1) Load segment-2 from shot 1110126026 (5.4 Tesla, 0.60 MA LSN, forward-field). Make changes to TF, Ip waveforms as described in MP647a: BT ramps up to 7.2 Tesla and IP ramps up to 0.80 MA. This is "shot-condition-A". 2) Turn off RF and LH. 3) At discretion of PO, either load segment-1 from the same reference shot, or else use a recent 5.4 Tesla segment-1. 4) set NeL demand to 8.e19. We will probably take 2 shots at this condition. Then: 5) Make changes to TF, Ip waveforms as described in MP647a: BT ramps down to 2.5 Tesla and IP ramps down to 0.46 MA. This is "shot-condition-B'. 6) Alternate between shot-condition-A and shot-condition-B until end of day.

the main purpose of this run is to determine the propagation direction of the turbulent feature at high k and frequency which is evident when the core toroidal rotation is directed co-current. the first shot will be a locked mode for the velocity calibration. the second shot will be a reversal discharge. if good, then several shots will be run for the PCI.

Shot Plan for the second part MP 640 ICRF heating of LHCD driven low density RS plasmas Request for total 18 (4+5+6+3)"ok" shot. Step 1) Target development for 640 (4 shot ?) Reload 1101119007 (450kA, 5.4T, ne04=0.3) Add He 3 puff to make 15% He concentration (suggested puff is 110-130ms). Ar puff 50ms LHCD starts from 0.9s 75 deg phasing and switch to 90 deg phasing from 1.0s. LHCD stops at 1.4s. ICRF form J-port is added from 1.5 s to 1.7 s. Use two-three shots to increase LHCD and ICRF power gradually. LHCD 600kW/ ICRF 0.8 MW LHCD 800kW/ ICRF 1.5 MW + one OH shot for MSE reference. Step 2) MC cntr-CD heating of LHCD plasma. (5 shot ?) Move ICRF pulse to 1.1s and see if what happens. If transient fluctuation of density is problematic, we may need to start ICRF even earlier. Try different heating power (0.8MW / 1.5 MW / 2.3MW) If plasma is heated successfully, add E+D after 1.2 s. Step 3) MC co-CD of LHCD plasma including one cntr-CD phasing for comaprison(6 shot) * 5T Step 4) MC heating of LHCD plasma with density rise (3shot) Choose better one between step 2 and step 3, and intentionally increase the density. This section depends on the results of step2. I expected that by just applying ICRF, density will rise. So the density ramp-up in this section has to be much larger than the natural increase. A practice using TRANSP suggests that we have to change the density by 50% to have a reasonably visible effect on f_bs. So, minimum density ramp-up is from 0.3e20 to 0.45e20 Step 2-backup) if adding ICRF to LHCD deteriorate the target plasma significantly, we change the target density to around 0.45, which is the density we observed SW suppression before. (I do not have any reason to believe that increasing the density is helpful. This is just trial)

MP 647a (shots 30 --> 38) We had some difficulties with breakdown / fizzles, but ultimately we got more or less what wanted. "High BT ramp (5.4 --> 7.2)" shots 31, 32, 35, and 36 are good. Be careful on shot 32, the DNB lost some inverters so analysis will be more complicated. "Low BT ramp (5.4 --> 2.5): shots 33 and 38 Fizzles: shots 30, 34, 37. shot 31 was another Hi-BT ramp but the DNB calorimeter was closed, so MSE got no data. On these shots we varied the MSE filter temperatures over the range 23 --> 59 Celsius. Also, on shot 36 Bob Mumgaard made several swaps in fiber / filter assembly, to make a big change in the relative wavelength of the MSE spectrum versus filter. Control room analysis: We expected to see a smooth change in polarization fraction in time, as the magnitude of the Stark split changed with BT. But surprisingly, in the BT ramps at filter termperatures of 23 C, we saw little change. This motivated the swap of fibers / filters. In shot 36 we finally did see small polarization fractions. In addition, we will get additional insight by examining the time dependence of the polarization fraction on a single DNB beamlet, because the DNB voltage varies from 40 to 50 keV. Executive summary: we did not observe the changes in polarization fraction that were expected, but we may have gathered enough data to figure out what is wrong.

SL summary 2nd part MP640 ICRF heating of LHCD driven low density RS plasmas This section started 10:20am and ended 3:10pm It was difficult run. We were able to do MC ICRF heating at low density showing clear heating. In shot 13, ICRF starts from 1.5s Te0 2.2->3.5keV and ne0 0.8e20->1.2e20 (ICRF 1.6MW 50MHz MC) In shot 14, ICRF was launched to LHCD plasma. Both ICRF and LHCD tripped and results is unclear, but turn-off of LHCD at 1.4s shows clear increase of vloop. Driven by observing LHCD and ICRF tripping simultaneously, we changed the field to 5.0T, which is the part 3 of run plan. This change and prolonging the ICRF pulse length starting from shot 22 disturbed the plasma control due to the magnetic probes' RF pick-up. We observed very high Zeff, increase of CII emission, and we obtained four disruptions. In shot 29, we moved 5.4T and increase the plasma current by 50kA, which eliminate the tripping of ICRF. But, LHCD tripped probably due to the low density at the launcher. As He3 puff length increased, the density tends to overshoot largely and did not come back to the target density. This issue was solved by splitting He3 puff to the first and second segments.

C-Mod ran well throughout the day. A magnetics pickup problem (see below) caused some problems with plasma control. 1110329001 was a shot to exercise the piezo gas fueling valves. This is typically the first shot of the week. It was run under engineering control and it was successful. The purpose of this run was to execute three MPs. MP 632, q Dependence of Rotation Reversal Density, SL: Rice The purpose was to acquire PCI fluctuation data to test a theoretical ansatz for plasma rotation features. The shots were 1110329002-1110329010 The run consisted of a couple of locked mode shots for calibration. There were some minor diagnostic delays. The purpose of the shots was apparently achieved. MP 640, ICRF heating of LHCD driven low density RS plasmas, SL Shiraiwa The shots were 1110329011-1110329029 This run was marred by pickup from J-port in the magnetic flux loops. Possibly due to modest plasma absorption.(?) Compare shot 027 where the antenna was off to the preceeding two shots 025 and 026. MP 647a, Evaluation of MSE issues, SL Scott The shots were 1110329030-1110329038. The goal was to test aspects of the MSE diagostic. Two shots were created by the SL with IP and BT ramps which scaned the MSE spectrum across the filter bandwidth. The shots were 1110329032 which corresponds to Figure 4 in MP 647a and 1110329033 which corresponds to figure 5 in MP 647a. The SL obtained 6 good shots required for this run and apparently achieved some of the goals.
