MP659 LHCD using moderate density plasmas in a single pass absorption regime Setup) He4 overnight ECDC LH2 : setup the same protection system configuration as previous high N// experiments Run from 9am to 6pm Step1) Target plasma development (3-5shot) Reload 1100210012 (ne04 = 0.5). Increase the density to 0.4 and remove D antena from ICRF pulse. Change Gas puff setting to use He4. Segment 1 need to be adjusted for a breakdown with He4 Step2) Apply LHCD to the target plasma LH power level = 300 -500 kW LH timing = from 0.7 s to 1.2 s Phasing 90, 105, 120, 135, 150 (each 100ms) If 150 deg turns out to be too tough, we will use 145 deg. Step3) If step2 is successfully done, we change target plasma density (ne04 = 0.3-0.4e20, 0.8e20) and repeat step2. Special request for diagnostics Between-shot HXR data analysis based on the revised PHA routine (-> Orso, Ian) MC position check using PCI (-> PCI team) Assuming each density takes 5 shots. total will be 5*4=20 shots including the target development |

Engineering setup for Monday 2011/04/04
MP659 - LHCD using moderate density plasmas in a single pass absorption regime

Over weekend: ECDC in HELIUM and 60 C bake.
Run will start at 09:00 and end at 18:00
NOTE extended run day.
Power systems as on: 1100210012 (1.0 MA, 8.0 T, 0.5e20 m-2, USN)
A-coil configuration: -Dtop +Dbot +Jtop -Jbot; Hybrid enabled (standard
configuration for reversed field)
Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi He Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 2 psi Ne Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid enabled (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi He Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill H-bottom with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG5)
leave NINJA as is
Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo, HIREX-Sr, B-spectrometer GV, Xeus
Torvac setup: keep gate valves open during pulse
Specific diagnostics: HXR array, TS, ECE (8 T), PCI

Run plan: Load seg 1 and 2 from 1100210012 (8 T shot), but fill fueling
plenae for helium breakdown and plasma operation. He3 puff is
150 ms. Set nl_04 to 0.6e20 m-2. LH will be applied with various
phasings. If successful, density will also be varied.
For the last 3 shots of the day we will switch back to a recent
deuterium ohmic shot (seg 1 = 1110329038, seg 2 = 1110114026) and
fire deuterium beam pulses into it and check the DD neutron rate.

This 8 tesla LH run had to be postponed until tomorrow because the machine was not cooled sufficiently over the weekend, and is too warm today to run 8 tesla. However, we will run one or two gas-only shots to check a possible problem with the pressure reading on the He3 (B-side-upper) plenum. |

Shot 01 -- No-power gas-only shot to check the plenum pressure in B-side-upper (He3). Looks like
the MDS shot cycle failed to go; there are no data.
Next shot: try again for a gas-only test shot

Shot 02 -- No-power gas-only test. The B-side-upper valve (He3) must have opened, and there must be
a finite pressure in that plenum, because the torus gauge registered an healthy increase, but
the gas system data acquisition failed.
Next shot: Try one more gas-only test, hopefully with data this time

Shot 03 -- No-power gas-only test of B-side-upper (He3) valve and plenum. Everything worked, and we
got the data this time to prove it. What's more, the B-side-upper plenum pressure is now
reading properly, so now there's nothing that needs to be fixed.
Shut down until tomorrow.
