MP659 LHCD using moderate density plasmas in a single pass absorption regime Setup) He4 overnight ECDC LH2 : setup the same protection system configuration as previous high N// experiments Run from 9am to 6pm Step1) Target plasma development (3-5shot) Reload 1100210012 (ne04 = 0.5). Increase the density to 0.4 and remove D antena from ICRF pulse. Change Gas puff setting to use He4. Segment 1 need to be adjusted for a breakdown with He4 Step2) Apply LHCD to the target plasma LH power level = 300 -500 kW LH timing = from 0.7 s to 1.2 s Phasing 90, 105, 120, 135, 150 (each 100ms) If 150 deg turns out to be too tough, we will use 145 deg. Step3) If step2 is successfully done, we change target plasma density (ne04 = 0.3-0.4e20, 0.8e20) and repeat step2. Special request for diagnostics Between-shot HXR data analysis based on the revised PHA routine (-> Orso, Ian) MC position check using PCI (-> PCI team) Assuming each density takes 5 shots. total will be 5*4=20 shots including the target development |

| Microproposal to assess neutral full-energy DNB current
Timing: last 2-3 shots of the day. High-level summary: inject the DNB (in DEUTERIUM) into an Ohmic deuterium plasma, Lower single null, 5.2 Tesla, 1.0 MA with a density ramp from NeL_04 = 0.5 --> 1.2 e20. Repeat same shot a few times. Segment-2 reference shot: 1110114026. Changes: #1: Impose a density ramp. at t=0.3 seconds, NeL_04 = 0.5e20. Ramp linearly to NeL_04 = 1.2 e20 at t=1.5 seconds. #2 Cryopump = off #3 Set duration of argon puff to 100 ms Segment-1 reference shot: 1110329038. Changes: #1 Adjust prepuff for cryopump-off conditions (I suggest 25-30 ms, but physOp can do what he deems best). DNB timing: start time = 0.50 sec. 80 ms on, 20 ms off. 10 pulses. Required hardware: DNB in deuterium Required diagnostics: Thomson, neutron detectors, single-chord VB. Desirable but not essential diagnostics: HIREX, ECE, TCI, UT spectroscopy (to monitor evolution of helium density), bolometers. Comment: this microproposal will follow an extended operational period in helium. We anticipate that there may be some contamination of the plasma with residual helium. |

| Summary of Microproposal to characterize DNB full-energy current
This was a successful run. We injected the long-pulse diagnostic neutral beam into an otherwise Ohmic plasma in a density ramp from 0.5 to 1.2 e20 m^-2. By varying the density, we vary the deposition profile of the beam. We will compare the measured neutron rate to TRANSP calculations. Good shots are 24 and 26. Shot 24 had about 7 good DNB pulses (80 ms on, 20 ms off) and shot 26 got all 10 DNB pulses. A small complication to this expt is that it followed a long period of operation in helium, so there may be some helium contamination of the plasma, leading to dilution of the target deuterium density. We can get an estimate of the deuterium density by comparing the measured neutron rate during DNB-off periods to TRANSP calculations that use the ion temperature measured by HIREX. We provided an argon puff to get good HIREX measurements of Ti. Thanks to all concerned for staying late to make this experiment possible. |

| Summary of MP549
LHCD using moderate density plasmas in a single pass absorption regime Run starts 8am, and we obtained full length He4 plasma from the first attempted discharge (shot 3). ICRF worked well smoothly expect for a repeatable trip due to drop of power line voltage. In the first few shots, the central temperature was about 4keV. After shot 4, we increased plasma current to 1.2 MA in order to increase Te, which increase Te0 to 4-5keV. These plasmas had a bit higher density than I used in modeling, but we chose to stay at a given density and to spend time on adjusting LHCD, since we knew LHCD coupling is difficult at high phasing. Although we were not able to eliminate trips from LHCD completely, we obtained clean transition from the lowest phasing to the highest phasing which can be used to evaluate the first order effect of phasing. After getting this discharge, we lowed a target density to obtain a discharge with modeled density. However, after shot 14, the breakdown became very difficult probably due to He4. We tried increasing pre-puff and even tried to breakdown in D2, but neither worked really well. Nonetheless, we found a interesting phenomena on these plasmas, We observed strong non-thermal emission and HXR emission. Those are clearly higher then what was observed in a previous experiments using the same density. The following in the summary of HXR emission based on the past 3 years of experiments. Probably, this is a very good result, but at present it is not clear why the emission is so high. Many things are different from other discharges and we are working on data analysis.

| Following a couple of gas tests to get pg3 running again, we had good results running at 8T in helium (both prefill and main gas) until shot 14 when we began a string of duds. Two were caused by problems with the EF1 commutation bank (8, 18). Others were related to fill pressure and our use of helium as the startup gas. Following the dud on shot 14, I increased the gas by 3 ms increments until we got a plasma again on shot 16 which unfortunately disrupted. Shot 17 was another dud, but it was not clear if it was a gas problem or a disruption recovery problem. On shot 20 we gave up on the helium prefill and switched to D2, which had a hard x-ray shutdown. On shot 21 we added more gas, but I put in the wrong timing for the pg3 seg 1 puff, so we had another x-ray shutdown. Shot 22 disrupted at 0.3 s, probably because of injections.
We switched to the MSE microproposal starting on shot 23. Bob Granetz became phsop. Score: gas tests 1,2 duds 8,14,15,17,18 fizzles 19 plasma 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,16,20,21,22 |

Shot 23 -- Plasma, but disrupted at t=0.36 s due to a big injection. The injection actually caused the
density to start rising sharply even before the radiated power starts up. Beam worked normally.

Load seg 2 from 1110114026 (5.2 T, 1.0 MA, LSN) and seg 1 from 1110329038. Adjust seg 1 gas for no cryopump. Adjust seg 2 nl_04 to ramp from 0.5 to 1.2e20 m-2. Change plena gases back to usual setup.
