MP 355C ICRF testing and conditioning, with detection of mode conversion location

Purpose of experiments:
Conditioning the ICRF system (D+E antennas), and also measure the location of RF mode conversion in H/D plasmas with large H/D ratio (compare the H/D level from H_alpha measurement and that from PCI measurement)

Plan:

1. Start with Bt0 = 6.0 T, 800 kA, nl = 0.8e20 m^-2, LSN plasma.
D antenna: 1 MW, 0.5-0.9 sec
E antenna: 1 MW, 1.0-1.4 sec.

2. Adjust Bt0 field based on the observed H/(H+D) level and PCI data. Adjust D and E antenna powers for conditioning the antennas.

3. Possibly program a B field ramp in order to clearly see the MC location.

4. H/(H+D) level is expected to rise shot by shot. Try to have two shots with reasonably clean RF pulses at each H/D level.

Physop plan:

Per SL plan, begin with a recent shot, e.g. 1111202030; this shot is
LSN, 5.4T, 800kA, 8e19. with a strikepoint sweep. Modify as follows:
1) If Bob has updated the btor_pickup values, recalculate mag predictors
in all segments. Need to change hybrid::top.config.config_id message
2) Remove Strikepoint (RXL) sweep
3) Change TF_CURRENT from -152800 (5.44T?) to 168500 (should be 6.0T)

See what we get, and modify field program and/or density as directed by SL
to identify MC location in PCI field of view.
Monitor H/(H+D) as we go along.

1. conditioned D and E antennas to 1.5 MW, running separately.

2. Run the new J antenna up to 1 MW. No problems encountered. Also tried mono-pole phase in the last a few shots.

3. Recorded H/(H+D) level and compared with PCI inferred H/ne data, for the range of H/(H+D) of roughly 15% to 35%.

4. H/(H+D) rises shot by shot.

5. Nearly no heating effect observed at this H level.

A relatively successful run. RF made progress on conditioning D&E up to
~1.5MW, and also got J going up to 1MW level, limited by voltage handling of N2 
in the transmission lines.

We started at 6.0T so PCI could see the mode conversion layer, and then
moved up to 6.2 as the H/(H+D) level rose with more RF power. This seemed 
to be successful, with Naoto reporting nH/ne fractions close to Earl's 
H/(H+D) signals. At shot#13 we went back to 5.4T for the rest of the run. 
The machine ran fine at 6 and 6.2T, with somewhat slower cooling rates. Since
the coax resistances have been good and we were double swinging anyway, I
had Andy move the Fizz Gate Off time from 2.1 to 1.8sec for shot#12 to get rid
of the TF increase and long pulse, but then we went back to 5.4T anyway. 

The sparker was misbehaving all day, with current dropping from the usual .2mA
to around .1 mA or less. Jim Irby posted a logbook entry noting that it appeared
to be voltage limited, and suggesting Bill Parkin could increase the supply 
voltage. However, the lower current did not appear to be adversely affecting 
breakdown. The sparker appears to be bistable, with two current levels. 

Operation was pretty reliable, at least up until a hard disruption (RF induced)
on shot#25. After that we had three fizzles in a row, one plasma, another 
fizzle, then four more plasmas with somewhat shaky startups. Runaways were not
a problem today; we had a few shots with ~3e13 levels on neuts/hards with 
a little snow on the tv, but nothing serious. 

I did a fair bit of fiddling with the startup, mostly gas, some voltage and
rcur tweaks, to no obvious benefit. On the last shot I did try dropping
the plateau voltage in the seg1 pg3 puff, which had already been shortened
a lot from what we used last year. This actually seemed to help with a 
hesitation and inward drift that had been present for the last part of the run.
Might be worth leaving at the lower (30V) level just to see how it behaves
for extended periods. 

There was one power system problem: oh2l crowbarred at switch close time on shot
#23. No blown fuses were found and the next shot ran fine. 

There was a logbook problem, maybe more than one, at the beginning of the day.
Initially the web-based logbook wouldn't come up for me, and people with
browsers already up reported slow response. IDL entry_display was working for
me. Then around shot#4 we started getting the error message indicating unable 
to allocate space. Josh and Tom fixed this by around shot#7, by changing 
a database parameter. It then took a few more shots before the logbook could 
be convinced to advance the current shot number. Everything seemed to work 
from around shot#10 to the end of the day. Then I had a brief hang trying 
to make the physop entry for the last shot (running in Chrome), but it
eventually made it. I don't know if this means the problems aren't completely
fixed or maybe there was just a network issue at the time.

Note that Sparker was working and arcing on the gas test shot#1,
but it looks like there was a loss of current between -0.5 and -0.25sec;
have to keep an eye on that. Voltage over 20kV

Result: Got gas that time
B-main responded fine. Sparker is below 0.06mA for an extended
period before t=0, just recovers at -0.07 sec; this could be trouble.

Next: Reprogram pg3 in seg1 and go for plasma, hope sparker cleans up.

Shot#4: repeat after long delay to track down issue with E-port;
seems to have been a bad point in the programmed waveform, but Yijun
is still not sure how it did what it did.

Result: plasma full length some early runaways
some hestitation in initial current rise, just over 200kA at 50msec
Sparker still faulting, maybe better than last time; cleaning up? Voltage 
down to 18kV around t=0 this time.
D&E still ratty, no early pulse from E this time.
Some evidence of heating on Te trace during Eport faulting
Density feedback puff is putting in about 10Torr-l
H/D going from .22 to .3 this time

Result: Fizzle, big C signal, looks like it's moving in. 
EF4 is already at -1310. Sparker was down at t=0 on this one,
but the breakdown time was normal. Complicating things is that
Wukie is pulsing J into vacuum between shots; no obvious junk on RGA.

so we don't extend the tf pulse on full plasmas.
Coax resistances look fine.

D and E still hanging in around 1MW (separately)

Irby has indicated that the sparker may need to have its voltage raised,
but the low level could be ok (see logbook entry under Ops). I'll leave
it for now, since the plasmas seem ok with it.

Result: plasma full length, current rise slower, under 150kA at .05sec
Sparker is back up to 0.22mA for most of its pulse this time. 
RF trying to stack, with mixed success, max power up to 2MW, no noticeable heating. 2pi foil is up to 1.5MW.
H/D was over 0.5 

Next: No DPCS changes, RF continuing to bang away

RGA is showing lots of 16 slowly coming down since the disruption,

current rise is slow, about 120kA at .05sec and it still moved in, but made it.
The walls pumped a little bit on this one, 6Torr-l out with 16 T-l in. 
C light only down a little, around 0.02
J ran with multiple faults, then steady for a short while 
E and D ran clean, all around 1MW. 

Next: leave short prepuff until it starts giving runaways

Startup looks iffy. 

RF runs just over 1MW with a few faults: order J/E/D
Divertor energy didn't update on 31, had a reading on inner divertor
on 30 (which had no plasma); possible problem.

D and E also clean at 1.4MW or so.
