The goal of this run is intended to fulfill the initial calibration, focusing and alignment requirement of the HiReX Sr spectrometer.

Tentative Run plan (subject to change with available time. part 2 has the priority)

1.Focusing tests (ref #1111206031 but no RF): get repeatable standard shots(need to be same Te) for HiReX focusing test until focusing curve is completed on all modules.

2. Locked mode calibration (ref #1110329010): when focusing test is done, continue running locked mode discharges until wavelength calibration is confirmed.

3. Absolute Ar density tests (ref #1110128009): if time allows, we may have some low density discharges with different argon injection time to try measuring absolute argon density.

Full day with a lot to look at for Polarimetery. The TF shots are very interesting and currently give us a much better idea of what the noise level is like at the flat top and a slow drift not seen in the last campaign. That the drift is present on one shot and not the next for a given chord makes it tricky to isolate but the rate is so slow that it also is doubtful to cause too much of a problem for this campaign.

The IP ramps are helpful, that Ne comes along for the ride of course makes the analysis a little bit more complicated. I'm pretty confident though that we'll be able to map out a decent sensitivity to IP.

The TF ramps within the shot in conjunction with the multiple shots at different values for Bt should allow for determination of corruption above or below the noise floor. Analysis to follow that tries to compensate for the Ne variation.

finally, the low frequency data on shot 27 doesn't look worse than 26 suggests that the upper box really isn't perturbed by sound as much as it used to be. We'll do follow up thumper tests on Monday.

Thank you all in and out of the control room for assisting with the run.

The machine ran reasonably well today.

Shots 1 and 2 were TF only tests (MP 677)

The first plasma (shot 3) was a 1 MA disruption (apparent impurity influx), followed by 2 fizzles. Then we got 9 good startups. Shot 14 was another 1 MA disruption (overfueled by ninja), and then we had several fizzles (6 out of 8 tries). The last 5 shots were good.

There were no power supply problems today. One shot was delayed when we were stuck in recool.

Session Leader Comments
Dec 7 2011 08:07:24:917AMWill BergersonI'd like to start with the two TF only tests at 150 KA.
Goal: Establish the TF only noise and determine noise at the flattop for analysis during the campaign.

As we are not piggy backing on someone else, the current dither that is in the listed shot in the MP should be modified as follows.
1) Move towards the start of the flat top and extend it from a single IP increase / decrease to multiple cycles of increasing and decreasing. It will be important to keep the density as constant as possible in this period.
Goal: Determine the sensitivity to the plasma current the diagnostic has.
Tweaks: (1) I'd like to vary the amplitudes of the dithers higher and lower as needed to find the sensitivity limit of the diagnostic. (2) I'd also like to look at a different initial target plasma upon which these dithers are made - adjusting IP*ne up or down. I'll punt that decision to the run time and guess that Jim wants to chime in on that one as well. I think that each target plasma and subsequent tweaks will need four shots.

2) Get a couple of plasmas with IP ~ 1MA and Ne ~ 10^20. Most of the shots thus far have resulted in modest phase changes for the diagnostic - ~ 10 degrees. Given parameters should push towards the other end of the diagnostic range.
Goal: Record data with larger Faraday shifts to identify any potential problems. 2-3 Shots

3) We need to test if there is any Bt corruption of the measurements. The general theme is to have a constant IP and Ne, and ramp or scale Bt. The two approaches we would pursue would be Bt ramps within a single shot and multiple shots, matching IP and Ne, while scaling Bt as much as possible.
Goal: Establish influence of Bt in measurement

- For the Bt ramps within a shot it would be helpful to have a couple of repeat shots and then some with different IP and Ne ( higher or lower) and a follow up Bt ramp during the flat top. Technically, it doesn't matter if Bt is ramped up or down, but going up is more helpful. I don't know if this makes a big difference on the engineering side though.
Tweaks: The rate and amplitude of the ramp within a single shot
Bt ramped shots 5-10: Determining the threshold of Bt contamination in the signal is very important and may require a number of shots to test a net delta Bt that has a derivative that isn't corrupting the measurement. It is already known that the derivative causes some problems.

- For the scaled Bt measurements, it is important to match the density and IP as much as possible while changing Bt as much as possible. For a given IP and Ne, three (two if there is a time crunch) different Bt's would be helpful ( 2-3 shots apiece).

4) Acoustic test. If the previous tests have been satisfied, I'd like to take a panel off the upper enclosure to test the effects of sound on the measurement. Should take 1 shot.

5) If the acoustic test isn't terrible, and there is time I'd like to do a beam co-linearity test. It will take more than 10 minutes to set up (up to 20), but has to be done at some point before taking research data.

Dec 7 2011 09:12:00:990AM1111207001Will Bergerson Less than 0.5 degree drift at flat top and noise below 0.5 degree as well.
typical problems at TF ramp.

Offset at t =0 depends on Channel, and which reference is used.
Beam issue not seen, but shutter open and may be signal may be swamping thier noise.
Dec 7 2011 10:04:22:020AM1111207002Will BergersonLooks like the noise at the flattop is dominated by ~30 hz - Peng reports

02 upper and 01 lower have differing values of offset at t = 0s. in comparison between TF shots.

AC noise below 0.5 degrees. 01U and 02U are ~0.2. DC ramp error exists on some channels for the 0 sec -> 0.5 sec, but settles down after that.

oddly the ref/ ref signal has differences between 01 and 02 as well. Didn't expect that oen. .5 deg offset on 01 (flat at flattop) and .2 degree on 2 with dc ramp to follow in flattop.
Dec 7 2011 10:06:33:560AM1111207003Will Bergersonstarting current modulation

will adjust dithers on a shot by shot basis.

Didn't make it but the measurements look good. Nice tracking of the density evolution prior to disruption.
Dec 7 2011 10:46:05:853AM1111207006Will Bergersonseeing a dither in signals, but timing looks to be delayed a little. going to shoter flattop to reduce effect from density drift.

core-most chord is pretty flat and there is a correlated dither on 2 and 3, next two outward from core, but oddly, suspected phase flip in #3 puts 2 and 3 IN phase.

dither on #3 ~1 degree
Dec 7 2011 11:15:24:290AM1111207008Will Bergersondensity evolution is increasing as well. but dithers now look stronger in the core-most chord. Delta IP at 1.1 sec. looks good and appears correlated to #1 and #2. Don't see a delay on this one.
Dec 7 2011 11:23:15:800AM1111207009Will Bergersondensity evolution is increasing as well - Rapid 3-4 degree on edge most chord but larger phase is probably a result of density change in the signal as well.
#1 and #3 have a nice signature at 1s and 1.2s, right at the notch in IP.

~1 degree change in #3 at 1 sec as IP ramps down and Density is pretty flat. -> only 20 KA change
Dec 7 2011 11:39:26:550AM1111207010Will Bergersonlooks like a degree drop on #3upper at the two 20 ka drops ending at 1.1 and 1.35

following ramps are about a degree on #1 upper- good density control in these regions.
Dec 7 2011 12:19:14:293PM1111207012Will Bergersonkeeping a single dither on the back of the flat top but moving to try for larger net phase changes by increasing IP * Ne.

single dithers are a little easier to track on the signals
Dec 7 2011 12:43:24:373PM1111207013Will BergersonNice ~15 degree phase shifts on signals. #3 still looks a little noiser, but it may be a reflection that chord is closer to the edge and simply not as clean. It also has the new style det. on it.

pre TF noise is great. 0.1 deg. Have to figure out the 30 hz though

1.26 - 1.32. ne_04 is flat with IP dropping 20 ka. Signal on #1 and #3 looks well correlated with it and total phase chage on #1 = 1.5 deg and on #3 2 deg. Have to examine again later with higher time resolution.
Dec 7 2011 12:36:54:350PM1111207014Will BergersonNice ~15 degree phase shifts on signals - just before the disruption. Signals look pretty clean actually. Phase noise after disruption only 1 degree on the uppers. Last campaign I recall amplitudes much larger than that.
Dec 7 2011 01:19:03:157PM1111207018Will Bergersonpretty immediate response to the IP change on #3 and #1 after. #2 still doesn't look quite like either other chord. Strange.
Dec 7 2011 01:44:31:423PM1111207020Will Bergersonstarting the BT ramps within a shot. target was 5.4 -> 6T

#3 looks good and #2 has a positive and negative swing during the Bt ramp which suggests something besides CM effects or geometry misalignment

Changes in #1 are more dynamic but def. not any kind of linear / quadratic sweep associated with Bt
Dec 7 2011 02:21:39:970PM1111207023Will BergersonDynamics are pretty rich during the TF ramp, but the signals don't exhibit a unipolar change in phase. More suggestive to me that ne profiles are shifting around. may need a matched shot in the future with efit running.
Dec 7 2011 02:30:25:843PM1111207024Will Bergersontrying for two shots with matched IP and Ne at different Bt. Hope we can hit them in time remaining.
Dec 7 2011 03:05:15:020PM1111207025Will Bergersoninitial comparisons look pretty good. We'll have to do more careful look off line try to compensate for rough Ne differences.
Dec 7 2011 02:58:09:420PM1111207027Will Bergersontook the smallest panel off the enclosure to test effects on signal with more noise getting into upper enclosure.
