Session leader plan (minor change from Sl_plan of 1111209):

Use vanilla 5.4 T, 0.8 MA discharges *start with 1111209001) to condition D/E and J antennas.

Initial discharges will be used to condition J-antenna in its 2-strap configuration to max power in L-mode, and examine its power handling, voltage limit, and impact on SOL density profiles. We will compare J/D/E antennas in terms of heating effectiveness, impurity production and neutral pressure limit.

LH-SOL reflectometer will require cell accesses to insert it to reasonable position. GPI will also be utilized to measure SOL turbulence changes with RF.

FMIT #2 (E-antenna) High voltage did not come up when demanded from the PLC computer. Causes are under investigation. HV came up normally locally, and also came up ok after restarting the PLC computer.

Also a delay due to alternator.

Run Summary

The reconfigured J antenna runs reasonably well as a dipole. The
powered straps are #3 and #4 (closest pair to K port) and copuled
voltage in straps #1 and #2 is higher during D/E operation than during
J. This indicates the shorts are in a good location to prevent #1 and
#2 from acting as passive radiators. We reached voltage maximum
approaching 40 kV for short pulses and did not press too aggressively.
Maximum power reached 1.4 MW into L-mode discharges but H-mode
discharges may be trouble due to the lighter loading. We also
explored the neutral pressure limit and found that J antenna (>2.3
mtorr or nebar~2.5x10^20) is signficantly higher than D and E
antennas. This should allow higher density operation.

There was a brief delay this morning getting the alternator up to speed, but
after we got the first shot off at 9:32, the machine ran with no significant
hangs.

On shots 5 and 24 there were nl04 fringe jumps that caused DPCS to reduce or
eliminate its feedback puff.

There were 5 fizzles, and a few shots with minor early runaways. There was a
small N2 leak identified mid-afternoon, which may have contributed to the
fizzle on shot 22. During the day I made small tweaks to the pre-fill, but
otherwise no changes to startup.

The first half of the run required repeated L-mode plasmas at low-to-moderate
density to evaluate RF coupling from D, E, and the reconfigured 2-strap J.
Initially we obtained brief H-modes, which were mitigated by lowering the nl04
demand to 6e19, thus edging into the low-density branch of the power threshold.
Nonetheless we still got L-H dithers, even at low power. Starting with shot 9,
I raised the strike point up about 3 tile rows, and the plasmas stayed reliably
in L-mode after that.

In the afternoon, SL requested density ramps in order to evaluate neutral
pressure limits on J,D and E. In order to get nl04 to ramp all the way from
0.6e20 to 1.1e20, it was necessary to introduce some integral gain to the nl04
controller. At Wolfe's recommendation, I used the same value as was being
used for the proportional gain. This worked to get the density up, even causing
some overshoot. It produced very nice midplane pressure ramps, as desired. This
was how we tried to run shots 16 through 25. RF group established that the
pressure limit for the new J-port design is much higher than before, which is
an excellent result!

From shot 26 on we went back to flat density targets for RF power steps. J-port
continued to perform well even at high densities.

J stays on while G-side pressure ramps from 0.03 to 2 mtorr.
