'Auxiliary' Session Leader Plan for DNB-deuterium operation

Note: There must be no cell access when DNB is actually firing deuterium into the calorimeter. This will be enforced administratively by the Physics Operator.

All shots will be: 60-ms beam on, 40-ms beam off.

Part 1: DNB into calorimeter. These shots will be taken between actual C-Mod shots. We will only take DNB shots up to 8 minutes past the previous C-Mod plasma shot, so as not to interfere with the C-Mod data acquisition cycle.

Part 1a: Perveance scan at 50 kV, with bending magnet OFF. 8-10 pulses per shot, varying the beam current from about 4.5 to about 7.0 amps.

Part 1b: At the optimum perveance identified in step 1a, with bending magnet OFF, take 2 shots each at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 pulses per shot.

Part 1c: with bending magnet ON, take 3 shots at 10 pulses per shot at optimum perveance.

Part 2: DNB into plasma. 5-10 shots at 8-10 DNB pulses per shot. We will accept whatever plasma conditions are available at the time. Purpose is to compare measured versus expected neutron emission.

Part 2a: between C-Mod plasma shots in Part 2, take a single DNB-into-empty-torus shot. To avoid overheating the inner limiter, restrict the beam to 4 pulses per shot.

Use vanilla 5.4 T, 0.8 MA discharges (start with 1111216003) to condition D/E and J antennas.

Since this is the first plasma operation post up to helium for a
boroscope inspection of the FA-J antenna, we will use vanilla plasmas
to investigate the machine condition. If the H/H+D is high as
expected, we will continue to condition the antennas and the machine.
Depending on conditions, we may switch to upper single null discharges
as on 1111209 (006-010).

In piggy back, we will condition J-antenna in its 2-strap
configuration to max power in L-mode, and examine its power handling,
voltage limit. We will compare J/D/E antennas in terms of heating
effectiveness, impurity production and neutral pressure limit if time
permits.

Use vanilla 5.4 T, 0.8 MA discharges (start with 1120104034) to condition D/E and J antennas.

To increase number of Joules, we will overlap the antennas and bring
up the power shot to shot. Depending on conditions, we will switch to
upper single null discharges as on 1120104032.

Machine and antenna conditioning were not significantly setback as a
result of the up to helium. After some initial issues with USN, we
managed to get fairly repeatable USN and were able to switch back to
LSN. The H/H+D started <10% but by the end of the day was approaching
15-18%.

Physics Operator Summaries

The run started slowly this morning due to the PG3 gas valve sticking. The PG3 valve started working again after increasing the initial puff to 50ms at 100V on shot 4.

Shot 5 was the first plasma of 2012. The lower nulls were based on seg 2 from shot 1111216003 with initial seg 1 from 1111216034. The LSN plasmas ran well with plasmas typically running all the way through rampdown to 0 kA. A few early disruptions were attributed to loss of density feedback---the PG3 valve would open full bore when TCI was lost.

We switched to USN plasmas starting with shot 15 (loaded seg 2 of 1111209012 into seg 3). These plasmas were vertically unstable with many disruptions at about 0.2s. Steve Wolfe discovered that the RCUR through ZXU predictors had not been recalculated since the coil changes during the last manned access. Performance improved after fixing this, but we still had many fizzles and early disruptions.

The CLEARIN ramp was slowed down to keep the plasmas from diverting so quickly. Additional fiddling with the PG3 and PG4 gas programming in seg 1 helped with both the fizzles and early disruptions. By shots 31-32 we had stable USN plasmas.

Shots 33-36 went back to LSN. Additional minor fiddling with the PG4 prepuff fixed the fizzle on shot 35.

Next shot: Try again before making changes. Might just be junk stirred up by previous shot.
Jan 4 2012 01:34:54:857PM1120104021Greg WallaceChanges: Try again before making changes. Might just be junk stirred up by previous shot.

Result: Hards starting at about 70ms. Disruption at 0.23s. Vertically unstable.

Next shot: Move CLEARIN=-0.01 point from 0.25s to 0.3s to slow down change from limited to diverted configuration.
Jan 4 2012 01:51:02:020PM1120104022Greg WallaceChanges: Move CLEARIN=-0.01 point from 0.25s to 0.3s to slow down change from limited to diverted configuration.

Result: Disruption at 0.2s. Some early runaways, hards really start rising around 60ms.

Next shot: Add PG3 control point at t=-0.15, v=100 to increase early PG3 to help control runaways.
Jan 4 2012 02:20:31:970PM1120104023Greg WallaceChanges: Add PG3 control point at t=-0.15, v=100 to increase early PG3 to help control runaways.

Result: Early hards (t<0.05s) went away but still have runaways after about 0.06s. Plasma disrupts at 0.19s. Vertically unstable.

Next shot: Extend PG3 back porch out to 100ms at v=30.
Jan 4 2012 02:30:11:000PM1120104024Greg WallaceChanges: Extend PG3 back porch out to 100ms at v=30.

Result: Plasma through rampdown, but lots of early runaways. Bounce at 14ms.

Next shot: Move CLEARIN=-0.01 point from 300ms to 250ms. Extend early PG3 by 5ms and PG4 pre-puff by 2ms.
Jan 4 2012 02:45:49:660PM1120104025Greg WallaceChanges: Move CLEARIN=-0.01 point from 300ms to 250ms. Extend early PG3 by 5ms and PG4 pre-puff by 2ms.

Result: Disruption at 0.17s. Vertically unstable again. Bounces at 12ms and 30ms.

Next shot: Shorten early PG3 flattop from 10ms back to 5ms in seg 1. Leave extended back porch in place and keep PG4 prepuff at 16ms.

Result: Plasma through rampdown. Seg 1 looks good.

Next shot: Repeat same shot.
Jan 4 2012 03:29:05:790PM1120104028Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat same shot.

Result: Plasma through rampdown.

Next shot: Repeat.
Jan 4 2012 03:39:18:267PM1120104029Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat.

Result: Plasma through rampdown. Still have some early hards.

Next shot: Increase PG4 prepuff from 18 to 19 ms to help control early runaways.
Jan 4 2012 04:14:02:837PM1120104032Greg WallaceChanges: Increase PG4 prepuff from 18 to 19 ms to help control early runaways.

Result: Plasma through rampdown.

Next shot: Go back to LSN. Turn off seg 3 and turn on seg 2.
Jan 4 2012 04:25:57:453PM1120104033Greg WallaceChanges: Go back to LSN. Turn off seg 3 and turn on seg 2.

Result: Plasma through rampdown. A little hesitation in the current ramp at 10ms. This shot had DNB firing Deuterium beam into plasma.

Next shot: Repeat.
Jan 4 2012 04:37:04:780PM1120104034Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat.

Result: Plasma through rampdown.

Next shot: Repeat with different RF antenna order.
Jan 4 2012 04:55:36:270PM1120104035Greg WallaceChanges: Repeat with different RF antenna order.

Result: Fizzle. Bounce at 15ms. Neutral pressure is slightly higher than previous shot???
