SL run plan for 17 Jan 2012

MP607 "Optimize the Gate Timing for the Thomson Scattering Data Acquisition System"
MP296 "Confirmation of Thomson scattering density calibration using electron cyclotron emission cutoffs"

Objective:

The main purpose of the run is to shakedown the upgraded Thomson scattering
system in plasma. We will (a) optimize alignment of the collection fiber plate
with the YAGs, (b) optimize integrator gate timing, (c) compare Te profiles
with Te from ECE and perhaps Ti from Hirex, and (d) obtain density calibration
data using ECE cutoffs.

ICRF and LH are not requested, although they may piggyback upon the SL's approval. Testing of the new divertor impurity seeding valves may also proceed
at low input levels.

Additionally, the PO may be requested to adjust the X-point and strike point position. This will be to evaluate the Ohmic confinement and rotation as a
function of strike position (floor vs. vertical plate).

Gas request:
D2 majority fueling
1psi Ar in B-side lower for Hirex
10 psi D2 in NINJA
If H-div and B-div are working, fill with either Ne or N2, depending on
feedback from Wolfe + Lipschultz

Diagnostic request:
GPC set to 5.4T. GPC2 optimized for 4.0T
Hirex available for Ti
DNB is requested, if available.

Run plan:

1. The run will start with a series of 5.4T, 1MA plasmas. Target nl04 = 7e19.
PO may use 1100708021 as a reference.

The first few shots will be used to optimize the alignment of the TS fiber
plate. Also, the TS team will monitor a scope attached to the TS DAQ in order
to check the pulse and gate timing. Frequent cell access will be required to
troubleshoot and to switch inputs to the scope.

For some shots, adjustment of the outer strike point position will be
requested.

2a. When alignment and timing are optimized, reduce Bt to 4.0T. Target nl04
demand should be ramped from 1e20 to 2e20 in order to cutoff GPC2. If q is too
low in this setup, reduce Ip to 0.9MA.

2b. Once density ramp is established, tweak Bt in increments of 0.1T in order
to obtain cutoff data at additional radii.

Following some gas tests, we had a series of shots (5--24) to (a) align the
TS fiber plate to the laser image using plasma and (b) to verify the correct
gate timing for the TS integrators. Most channels with measurable signal were
evaluated in this manner, and the bottom line is the timing looks very good.

We ended the day with 2 ECE cutoff shots (27, 30) at 4.0T and 3.9T.

The last shot was an attempt at a locked-mode shot for Hirex calibration, but it
resulted in a fizzle, like many of our shots.

We will get a preliminary calibration in the tree ASAP and get our analysis
codes working again.

Also it became clear today that we are not getting as much scattered energy as
we expect with the new setup. This will require some troubleshooting.

B-main did not puff initially, but it started to work after appling 40ms 100V pulse (shot #4)

4) On the last shot, the locked mode calibration was tried, but we got a fizzle probably
due to a previous disruption.

Returned all cables to normal configuration, so that we digitize laser energy.

Request 4.0T, 0.8MA flattop, with density ramp.

Unfortunately, YAGs were shut off by WD timeout while I was in the cell. I
didn't notice until we were in INIT, and there wasn't time to re-warm them.

Result: Fizzle
