Session leader plan for 1120127
Session Leader: G. Wallace
Physics Operator: R. Granetz
MP: 605 LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher Checkout and Conditioning

LH Setup: Launcher ~3 mm behind GH limiter (1290 counts on PLC); 90 degree current-drive phasing; 200-1000 kW net power (~70-200 kW/klystron); LH on from 0.7 to 1.2s.

Reference shot: 1120119017.

Shot Plan:
1) Begin with co-current 90 degree ideal phasing. Set power level to 70 kW/klystron (half on direct fed columns). Set pulse length to 0.1 s.

2) Increase pulse length to 0.5 s.

3) Increase power in increments of 10-20 kW/klystron. Pay particular attention to LH camera view. If arcing occurs, reduce power by 50% and begin raising power again.

4) Adjust plasma or launcher position if breakdown on grill mouth does not improve.

5) Lather, rinse, and repeat as necessary.

SL Summary for 1120127

Today's run was dedicated to increasing the LH power to the plasma. The run was quite successful despite an air leak and data system problems in the afternoon. We increased net power up to nearly 750 kW on shot 23.

There were a few breakdown events on the LH grill, mostly on the B row. Seems to be in the same places as in the last campaign. Repeating shots or slightly reducing power helped on subsequent shots.

In the morning we were running lower null plasmas, but after a few shots Matt noticed a bunch of fluorine in the plasma, probably coming from his Lyman diagnostic cables. Switching to upper null fixed the problem. Speculation is that a cable came loose and is sticking in near the plasma.

Most of the day was spent at Ip=700 kA. We dropped to 500 kA at the end of the day to try for a bigger loop voltage drop for Ron. On shot 26 we reached -0.2 V transiently, but many CPS faults kept the pulse length short.

Not bad for the first day of high power conditioning.

Run summary for Friday 2012/01/27

MP605 - LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher and Conditioning

Session leaders: G. Wallace
Physics operator: R. Granetz

Excellent progress was made on increasing the lower hybrid power,
eventually getting up to 0.73 MW for 0.5 s pulses. The LH was running very
well, with almost no faulting. The tokamak ran well too, as did the DNB.
We did have some annoying problems with computer hangs, particularly around
shots 20 and 21. There was also a brief air leak after shot 18. It was
found to be from the H-port seal, so that was pumped out. Matt Reinke
noticed an increasing amount of fluorine early in the run, which prompted
us to switch to upper null plasmas. The fluorine is probably from Teflon
insulation on signal cables of one of the bolometry arrays. The signal
conduit may have come loose. Finally, the Thomson system now is working
quite well.

Scorecard: 26 plasmas
            0 duds
            0 fizzles
            0 power supply tests
            1 no-power MDSplus cycle tests
            0 no-power gas test
           --------------
Total: 27 shot cycles (shot 20 occurred twice, so the last shot number
            is 26)

Session Leader Comments
Jan 27 2012 09:35:27:587AM1120127001Greg WallaceUnable to switch klystrons 9-10 into launcher position. Pat found a blown fuse in IDC dummy load switch solenoid. 1A, 250V fuse. Working now.

Disruption at 0.2 s due to runaways. No LH. Try again.
Jan 27 2012 09:50:58:770AM1120127002Greg WallaceReflection coefficient a bit high, especially early in the LH pulse. Moving launcher in from 1290 to 1285. Launcher position recorded in tree is incorrect and should be ignored.

Next shot will set nl_04 programming to 0.4e20.

Some signs of current drive even at 200 kW net power.

Increase LH pulse length to 0.25 s for next shot.
Jan 27 2012 09:57:55:763AM1120127003Greg WallaceDisruption at 0.29 s.
Jan 27 2012 10:23:22:483AM1120127004Greg WallaceClean LH pulse. LH camera view is occluded on bottom row. JT in the cell to fix it. LH launcher now reading 3mm behind GH limiter in tree.

Reflection coefficient drops from 60 to 20 % during the pulse! Density on LH probes rises from near cutoff to about 4x cutoff during pulse. nebar is constant after 0.75 s but probe density continues to rise.

Increase pulse length to 0.5 s for next shot.

Jan 27 2012 10:51:46:553AM1120127005Greg WallaceAnother good shot. Reflection coefficient decreases from 60% to 10% during shot! Up to 275 kW at end of pulse. Strange bright spot on grill at 0.45 s during crossover.

Next shot will move LH pulse start time to 0.8 s to see if density increases a little by the beginning of the pulse.
Jan 27 2012 10:54:45:047AM1120127006Greg WallaceAnother good LH pulse. No bright spot on grill. Refco decreases for first half of shot then is amazingly flat later in the pulse.

Increase power to 85 kW/klystron (max at 40 kV) for next shot.
Jan 27 2012 11:12:31:493AM1120127007Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 85 kW/klystron. Net power of up to 320 kW/klystron. Reflection coefficient didn't drop below 15% on this shot.

Increase power to 100 kW/klystron for the next shot.
Jan 27 2012 11:28:08:040AM1120127008Greg WallaceCOTS fault on A2V1 at 1.214 s.

Increase COTS multiplier from 0.2 to 0.28 for next shot. Repeat.
Jan 27 2012 12:54:00:703PM1120127009Greg WallaceClean LH pulse with no COTS or CPS faults. Reflection coeff keeps rising shot by shot? Matt reports increase in F in plasma, probably from teflon heating up somewhere in the vessel. Camera looks OK.

Next shot will increase to 115 kW/klystron. Will have to be careful with the teflon...
Jan 27 2012 11:58:30:387AM1120127010Greg WallaceFe injection from the grill at 1.05 s. Clearly visible on LH camera. No CPS faults. Might have been caught by rate based CPS fault protection if enabled.

Reduce back to 100 kW/klystron for next shot.
Jan 27 2012 12:13:44:160PM1120127011Greg WallaceNo injection from LH launcher at 100 kW/klystron.

Matt says that his bolo box is going haywire during LH pulse. Might be the source of teflon in the plasma. Next shot will be into dummy load to see if teflon source goes away.

Will enable rate based CPS fault protection for next shot. 50% change in 15us will trigger a fault.
Jan 27 2012 12:54:11:233PM1120127012Greg WallaceLH into dummy loads. Ledge Ly diagnostic still having problems but F level did not increase.

Next shot will go back into plasma for LH.
Jan 27 2012 12:51:17:147PM1120127014Greg WallaceClean LH pulse with rate fault protection enabled. Good current drive with consistent reflection coefficient around 20%. About 400 kW net power. LH camera looks clean.

Increase to 115 kW/klystron on the next shot. Power ramps at beginning and end of the pulse.
Jan 27 2012 01:10:23:987PM1120127015Greg WallaceA few faults at the very beginning due to rate faults. Cleared up and ran clean for the rest of the pulse. Camera looks OK.

Increase rate fault % to 70 and decrease fault time to 10us. Next shot will also increase to 130 kW/klystron.
Jan 27 2012 01:21:13:413PM1120127016Greg WallaceGood shot. Reflections stay pretty constant around 20%.

Next shot will go up to 145 kW/klystron.
Jan 27 2012 01:38:02:333PM1120127017Greg WallaceBright spot in middle of grill at 1.088 s on LH camera. Can see a divot on net power at the same time. Reflected power spikes again twice later in shot but can't see on camera. 600 kW net power.

Repeat same power level for next shot. Increase rate time to 30 us.
Jan 27 2012 02:03:00:440PM1120127018Greg WallaceLH pulse looks good. Still have a nuisance rate fault at beginning.

Increase to 160 kW/klystron for next shot.

Air leak. after shot. Long delay....
Jan 27 2012 02:50:30:980PM1120127019Greg WallaceACS PXI system froze. No forward power. CPS faults due to undefined reflection coefficient. Will try again at 160 kW/klystron.
Jan 27 2012 03:13:47:723PM1120127020Greg WallaceNo power shot.
Jan 27 2012 04:09:14:270PM1120127021Greg WallaceHV enable fault. No LH.
Jan 27 2012 04:21:05:617PM1120127022Greg WallaceOne CPS fault early, then clean LH pulse for the rest of the shot. Increase to 175 kW/klystron for next shot.
Jan 27 2012 04:28:40:853PM1120127023Greg WallaceSome faint glowing from 15/16/dummy septa on LH camera. 3 faults early and 1 late. The final fault looks like a real "event" that needed to be cleared.

Will try again at this power level.
Jan 27 2012 04:42:30:773PM1120127024Greg WallaceSome breakdown across B row of launcher at 1.263 s. Reflection coefficients continue to rise.

Next shot will decrease Ip to 500 kA so Ron can see some non-inductive operation.
Jan 27 2012 04:57:59:013PM1120127025Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 175 kW/klystron, 675 kW net pow. Sawteeth are suppressed by the LH at 500 kA.

Next shot will decrease nl_04 demand to 0.3e20. Increase to 190 kW/klystron but keep A1V3 at 175.
Jan 27 2012 05:07:44:217PM1120127026Greg WallaceSeveral CPS faults. Reflections are higher overall. Only about 750 kW net power.

Loop voltage transiently reached -0.2 V. Ron will need to wait for next week to try again.

Last shot of the day.
