| MP687: Transfer Calibration of VUV/SXR Spectroscopy
SL: M.L. Reinke PO: E. Marmar This run will work to calibrate the VUV and SXR impurity spectrometers on Alcator C-Mod, using strong impurity seeding on Ohmic plasmas. With sufficient contamination, global measurements like the PRAD, XTOMO brightness and the dilution can be used to estimate the absolute impurity density. This can be used, along with impurity transport and radiation modeling, to provide a calibration constant for the spectrometers. Additionally, the results of this run can be used to find Zeff which can be compared to a number of other methods (VUV/VIS/IR continuum, neoclassical resistivity). A fixed target discharge will be repeated throughout the day and the seeded impurity changed every few shots. ECDC overnight in D2 deuterium main-ion plasmas start with 1.0 psi Ar in H-BOT plenum (disabled) start with 20 psi He in B-SIDE LOWER plenum (disabled) will want He, Ne, Ar, Xe and N2 (in that order) throughout the run day going into B-SIDE lower. D2 only in the GPI system (confirm w/ SL before enabling) LSN starting discharge: 1120106027 (1.1 MA, 5.4 T, 0.3 < nl04 < 0.6 10^20) (1) load LSN target, modify parameters: Ip=1.2, Bt=6.2, nl04 ~ 0.9. Demonstrate clean baseline plasmas. (2) add trace Ar to (1) H-BOT 0.30-0.35, enable Mo LBO (x3 or x4 injections) (3) start moving through recycling impurities (keep H-BOT, no [maybe..?] Mo LBO) Set B-SIDE valve to 75 V a) 20 psi He from 0.7-1.0 b) 3.0 psi Ne from 0.7-0.95 c) 2.0 psi Ar from 0.7-0.90 (do a locked mode calibration shot: 1120118001) d) 1.5 psi Xe from 0.7-0.85 At each step, adjust PG voltage level and puff length to increase impurity level near maximum possible for Ohmic plasma. If delays or difficulties are encountered skip 3d (Xe puffing) (4) move to non-recycling impurities a) 15 psi N2 from 0.7-0.95 (5) move to innerwall limited to try and change the Mo and B levels above clean target (1). Lower the nl04 to 0.7, 0.5 10^20 if necessary. (6) repeat (1) to try and demonstrate "clean" plasmas (7) if time, select from 3a-c and repeat, testing for hysteresis (8) if time and diagnostic personnel available, run ECE/TS calibration shots (repeat 1120117027) |

| MP296 summary
We got three shots at the end of this run for TS calibration using ECE cutoffs. Result was two plasmas and a fizzle. The two plasmas (34, 36) had useful cutoff data on GPC2. It should allow apreliminary calibration of the TS channels inside Rmaj~0.8m. |

| We were able to get the calibration shots we needed for He, N2, Ne and Ar. Lots of post-disruption fizzles put us behind enough that the Xe and inner-wall limited plasmas weren't run. This should be enough to get the calibration ready for next week's MP 671 run.
We tweaked up the un-seeded plasma from shots 001-004. Shots 005-009 were He seeding where we were able to change the dilution substantially, but there wasn't much PRAD increase. Shots 010-16 were Ne seeding with 015 being the best. Shots 017-020 were Ar seeding and 021-022 were locked mode calibrations for HIREXSR. Shot 023 (and 032) were repeats of the unseeded baseline and 024-031 used N2 seeding. The last few shots (033-036) were used for Thomson scattering and ECE cross-calibration. During the higher N2 seeding shots (027,028), there was a strange feature that initially presented like an L/H transition but was later identified to be a "poloidal detachement" which I had not encountered before. We didn't have the LBO or DNB for this experiment which limited some of the secondary goals of getting CXRS data. The Ne and N2 GPI-based CXRS worked really well. The N VII line was looked at with higher spectral resolution but there's still blending issues with the N II line. The Ne CXRS ~525 nm looks very promising for a possible substitute/complement for pedestal CXRS. We need to revisit this w/ the DNB and the higher resolution CHROMEX grating. Overall, a slow run that was probably made tougher by my choice of high Ip induced post-disruption fizzles. The non-recycling nature of the N2 allowed for easier ramp downs because the impurities left the confined plasma by the time we ramped down. In the future, if this is run again for Ne or Ar the cryopump should be used to help assist in reducing the recycling rate. |

| The machine ran reasonably well today, but we had more than the usual number of fizzles. Many followed high current (1.2 MA) disruptions, which were mainly the result of all the impurity puffing for today's MP. Tweaks to fill-pressure and EF4 current did not appear to help (or hurt). The last 2 plasmas were used for ECE cutoff calibration of Thomson density.
