| MP671 "Investigation of dilution effects on turbulence and transport in low density ohmic plasmas"
The purpose of this run is to investigate the result that diluting the main ion species of the plasma with some lower Z ions results in reduced ion transport without having significant effects on electron transport. This will be done by measuring the impurity content of unseeded plasmas with the newly calibrated impurity diagnostics (based on MP 687) and then seeding the plasmas with Nitrogen in order to dilute the main ions by at least 15-20% (the level at which we see the effects on transport). Locked mode shots will be taken to calibrate HIREX-SR. Ohmic Scan based on: Run 1070713XXX (5.4T, 800 kA, though I won't have as large a density scan) N2 Puffs based on: Shots 1120203027-031 (will have to reduce amount because of lower density) He ECDC the night before. The original purpose of this run was to do an ohimc density scan and seed low-Z impurities (in this case Nitrogen) to study the effects of dilution. We managed to get a density scan from nl04=0.25-0.8 x 10^20 m^-2 in the unseeded plasmas (thought the lower bound had lots of runaways) and scanned from 0.35-0.75 x 10^20 m^-2 in the seeded case. At the highest densities in both seeded and unseeded we encountered what appeared to be MARFs and poloidal detachment, which caused the plasma to cool and often disrupt. We also had many post-disruption fizzles, so that limited the number of shots we could use over all, and we lost a couple of shots at the end due to camac issues. We also needed a Thomson ECE cutoff calibration shot to correct the Thomson density profiles. Over all this was a successful run day and we managed to get enough points in density and Zeff space to do gyrokinetic modeling. Other than the computer problem developed around 4:30pm, we did not experience power supply, leak, nor gas valve issues.. We made 32 attempt to make plasma, and obtained 24 successful discharges. We finished from "shot 1" to "shot 11" listed in SL plan. At the very low density case (0.2e20), we obtained significant run-away electrons, so that we skipped these "shot". We got 8 fizzles, all of them happened after disruptions or due to high radiation in the previous shot. The following is the score card of today. ![]() |
