| MP 690: 'Implementation of new impurity seeding systems'
SL: B. Lipschultz PO: I. Hutchinson boronization overnight 5.4T, 800 kA, lower single-null RF power as high as is reproducible. We will want it on as soon as possible after reaching current flattop and going to around inversion. Fill H-bottom plenum to 15 PSI N2. Fill B-side_lower plenum to 20 PSI N2 nl04 ~0.8e20 before RF power hits The plan today is to scan the puff rate of N2 for at least 2 valves - the new impurity seeding tube under the BC divertor section, and the usual 'B-side-lower'. We may decide in the first part of the run to go with some combination of the new B-div seeding tube and a similar one under the H-J divertor ('H-div'). part B1 ?? Comparison of seeding locations for N2. 800 kA, EDA discharges (start with 1101216011/012). RF power of order 3 MW, as much as possible. We are considering one RF pulse from 0.5 to 1.5s. B1.1: Post boronization recovery with adjustment of the seeding levels with B-div and H-div puffing (start with 100 ms pulsewidth each at 20V and 15 PSI N2) till we have enough signal on core and divertor spectrometers ?? (~ 4 discharges?) and the divertor is not detached. The suggestion is to start the ICRF as soon as we hit flattop (say, 0.5 seconds) with the B-div triggered 50 ms later (we think it takes 50 ms to get in) so that the N2 hits some 100 ms after the H-mode starts. H-div would be pulsed at 1.3 seconds. Once the plenum pressure and pulse width is set we can then compare B-div + H-div together (lower the duty_factor ~ by 2 on each) to what was needed for them separately. That would be compared to B-div by itself. PO ?? we need to pay attention to rampdown and disruptions. We may need to shut down the gas early or run the RF longer or plasma current flattop longer. B1.2: Based on the voltage and pulsewidth settings determined in B1.1 we can set up B-div (or B-div + H-div) and B-side lower (20 PSI) for a comparison. a) Pulse B-side-lower first (20 %) at 0.55s as in B1.1 and B-div (20 %) at 1.3s. b) The next shot would be the reverse order. c) Assuming the data is ok we keep the same order and go to the next puff rate and keep the same order. d) reverse the order and repeat at the same puff rate. We plan to do this for a total of 5 different puff rates from the minimum determined in step B1.1 to around 20 tl/s (say 5, 8, 12, 16, 20 tl/s which would correspond to 20% through 80%). So ~ 15 discharges assuming 3 needed per pair at the same injection rate. Again, we are hoping to start at a low enough puff rates so that at least one case has the outer divertor attached. The upper range is determined by trying to match the scan done by Matt in 110903020, shown in Fig. 1 of the mp. 3. If time is available and the goal of comparing more puff locations with N2 is more important than Ne tests (part B2) we will finish any comparison of puff locations not accomplished in step 1. We could also make extended puffs (single location) to see if there are any differences to the short puff. If we get far enough (doubtful) then move to part B2. |

Do overnight boronization in accordance with the Session Leader's plan: Boronization â?? rmin/rdwell/rmax: 44/75/80 cm tdwell/tsweep: 60/120 s ECDC PARAMETERS, following boronization: --gas: He --Pressure: 1e-4 Torr --sweep: 45/43/103 cm --scan: 20/120 s --duration: three hours Cryopump should be ready for the run. Gas: 25 PSI N2 in H-bottom and 30 PSI in B-side plena. Consult SL Bruce Lipschultz for other special gas puff requirements. There might be a need for some test gas puff shots before the run starts with power at the usual time. |

| MP 690: 'Implementation of new impurity seeding systems'
SL: B. Lipschultz PO: I. Hutchinson general issues: The first 6-8 discharges were plagued by Mo injections. Something about the boronization may have brought them on. What we learned - 1) The divertor seeding does lead to more divertor vs the core plasma radiation than puffing through B-side-lower. 2) Puffing at the closed port (BC) div. seeding valve was somewhat better at keeping the radiation in the divertor than near an open port (HJ). 3) The amount of N2 puffed was integrated to some extent over shots. This means that we will need some sort of feedback that takes this into account. 4) The divertor was very difficult to detach up to the nose with today's plasmas. We are not sure why. We saw clear evidence of the N2 shifting the divertor plasma to high recycling (drop in Te, increase in ne) with some amount of pressure loss. 5) Various turbulence were affected by the N2: The QC mode changed frequency and other modes appeard. This may be important to follow. 6) While the Mo levels in the plasma were affected by the N2 it was not clear whether divertor puffing or main chamber puffing had a stronger effect on lowering Mo. This is partly due to the variable nature of the Mo levels within a given discharge even without N2 puffing. For example, the Mo radiation (MoXXXII) rose and fell during 1120214018 without any outside interference. It may have been the confinement (and QC mode) controlling its transport there. More later |

| Overview
-------- Today's physoping was a rather successful "recovery" from boronization. Cryopump was used all day and caused just one fizzle by a burp. That was the only fizzle. Within a couple of shots we had good RF operation and steady H-modes. There were however a number of unexplained injections that caused some trouble and a few disruptions. Puffing of nitrogen was developed and proved able to control Mo radiation but eventually cause excess power loss of its own. Shot to shot nitrogen accumulation was noted. The shot inherited had a rampdown that also ramped in rcur too quickly. This caused vertical control disruptions that were fixed by leaving rcur further out during the rampdown, giving a more vertically stable plasma. Scorecard ---------

| Feb 14 2012 09:03:29:420AM | 1120214001 | Bruce Lipschultz | No plasma |
| Feb 14 2012 09:15:50:483AM | 1120214002 | Bruce Lipschultz | plasma. H-mode near the end with just J-port. No N2 puffed. Strike point moving up the plate from probe 4 to 6. PO will try to move it down. We will wait on the N2 puff one more shot. |
| Feb 14 2012 09:22:38:440AM | 1120214003 | Bruce Lipschultz | Disruption shortly after 0.5s. Looks like Mo injection? After a boronization? |
| Feb 14 2012 09:49:41:863AM | 1120214004 | Bruce Lipschultz | This one went all the way in H-mode. No N2 puff. Injection mid shot (probably Mo) and the strike point seems a bit low. Next shot move the RF a littleearlier and start the N2 injection:
B-div pulsed at 0.63s and for 0.1 seconds at 25% H-div pulsed at 1.25s and for 0.1 seconds at 25% |
| Feb 14 2012 10:05:10:130AM | 1120214005 | Bruce Lipschultz | This one went all the way in H-mode. 2 N2 puffs. Injection mid shot (probably Mo) and the strike point seems a bit low still but better. :
B-div pulsed at 0.63s and for 0.1 seconds at 35% H-div pulsed at 1.25s and for 0.1 seconds at 35% |
| Feb 14 2012 10:35:07:227AM | 1120214007 | Bruce Lipschultz | fizzle - gas leak or cryopump burp |
| Feb 14 2012 10:53:36:300AM | 1120214008 | Bruce Lipschultz | shot started ok but injections killed it.
Both H-div and B-div were on at 100% for 0.1s. Core NVII screaming up before disruption. 2.15 tl out of B-div which went first before the disruption. Next shot lower the duty cycle to 60% |
| Feb 14 2012 11:25:08:710AM | 1120214009 | Bruce Lipschultz | terrific shot. NII in the divertor and NVII in core - nice traces for each.
Both H-div and B-div were on at 60% for 0.1s. 1.15 tl out of B-div (1.05 for H-div) Next shot go to the program with B-side-lower (73%) and B-div at 60%. B-side lower will be first and B-div second. |
| Feb 14 2012 11:24:40:270AM | 1120214010 | Bruce Lipschultz | Good shot other than Mo injectionm between N injections. According to Matt we have a lot of other impurities - Cu and Fl.
NII in the divertor higher with B-div than with B-side-lower (as expected). Core NVII about the same. We got less gas out of B-side-lower so we will repeat and raise B-side-lower to 90% from 73% 1.15 tl out of B-div (0.81 for B-side lower) |
| Feb 14 2012 11:40:29:103AM | 1120214011 | Bruce Lipschultz | No Mo injection.
NII in the divertor slightly higher with B-div than with B-side-lower (as expected). Core NVII now higher with B-side lower. We are getting ~ the same tl out of both valves. Next reverse the order of puffs. |
| Feb 14 2012 11:53:15:070AM | 1120214012 | Bruce Lipschultz | No Mo injection.
Reversal of timing of puffs gives as expected. The B-div puff still gives the highest divertor radiation compared to the core. BUT, the divertor is not detaching. So let's go up to 100% on both valves - giving more on B-div than on B-side-lower. |
| Feb 14 2012 12:21:53:967PM | 1120214014 | Bruce Lipschultz | Mo injection.
Moved B-div later and turned B-side lower off in order to see if the slight temperature drop on the J-div probes of the last shot is real. We now see a temperature drop on both J- and F-divertor probes. In the private flux region it looks detached. Near the separatrix we seem to be cooling the plasma and this trades with higher density - pressure does not really change. Next, puff H-div and B-div simultaneously to see if we push over to detachment. |
| Feb 14 2012 12:49:24:280PM | 1120214015 | Bruce Lipschultz | No Mo injection.
Puffed H-div and B-div simultaneously - signs of detachment initially followed by the density rising in the divertor. Brian says we may have detached and then the death ray comes back. Try to get more steady state by extending the H-div and B-div to 200 ms and then a lower level pulse (60%) for another 200 ms. |
| Feb 14 2012 01:17:18:297PM | 1120214017 | Bruce Lipschultz | No Mo injection but had a transition to lower confinement - still too much N2?
Puffed H-div and B-div simultaneously for 100 ms followed by a 60% puff for another 300 ms. Again, the temperature in the divertor drops, but at some point the density rises as well. go to no puff since it seems we have too much in the machine. The core NVII is at a level (before the puff) equal to during the puff of earlier shots. |
| Feb 14 2012 01:55:05:123PM | 1120214019 | Bruce Lipschultz | No puff again. N levels in the divertor still high. We will go back to the puff. But at lower levels. Just B-div, 100 ms, 100% next shot |
| Feb 14 2012 01:57:11:807PM | 1120214020 | Bruce Lipschultz | Just B-div, 100 ms, 100% at 0.83, arriving around 0.9. The divertor temperature drops as before. Definitely see the Mo come down.
Next shot H-div, same puff setup. |
| Feb 14 2012 02:28:15:137PM | 1120214021 | Bruce Lipschultz | pretty useless because of injections |
| Feb 14 2012 02:51:17:023PM | 1120214022 | Bruce Lipschultz | H-div worked fine with a steady state shot. The rise in the divertor NII was lower for the H-div than B-div but we have no comparison for NVII in the core. Will repeat B-div (shot 20) to get that data.
The Langmuir probe data shows some differences between 20 and 22. The region of the strike point appears to have stronger Te drops while further out less of a drop. However, for 23 the drop in Te further out in the common flux region is more pronounced - perhaps something to do with more main chamber radiation? The Mo levels are lower for the B-div shot (20) |
| Feb 14 2012 02:56:16:427PM | 1120214024 | Bruce Lipschultz | Back to B-div to see if the differences between H-dv abd B-div reproduce. And they do:
Lower Mo levels for B-div More pronounced Te drop near the strike point, lower further into the SOL for B-div Less NII signal in the divertor for the H-div puff (measurement at K-port) Next shot go to higher density as we believe we may not be far enough into high recycling regime because the divertor temperatures are too high now. Note - Matt has been looking at the PCI and magnetics (and AXUV) for signatures of QC-mode. I believe he has observed the QC mode going away during the N puff. |
| Feb 14 2012 03:19:53:413PM | 1120214025 | Bruce Lipschultz | Increased nl04 to 1.2. Too much gas for the RF. No H-mode and disruption at ~ 1 second.
Try again for density of nl04= 1.1 |
| Feb 14 2012 03:45:58:867PM | 1120214026 | Bruce Lipschultz | Still having problems with RF turning on |
| Feb 14 2012 04:19:27:413PM | 1120214027 | Bruce Lipschultz | In and out of H-mode. Not making progress. Lower density |
| Feb 14 2012 04:21:28:753PM | 1120214028 | Bruce Lipschultz | Still not keeping the RF on. Try again. Lower density |
| Feb 14 2012 04:32:25:743PM | 1120214029 | Bruce Lipschultz | 40% duty factor N injection starting 0.4. The plasma seems ok till it turns off when the Mo and N in core accumulates. It seems to go up in the divertor as well.
Next shot extend the pulse to 1.0s and lower dutyfactor to 20%. |
| Feb 14 2012 04:46:54:900PM | 1120214030 | Bruce Lipschultz | 20% duty factor N injection starting 0.4. The Mo in the core is high till 0.7 seconds when the divertor Te comes down. When the N2 is turned off at 1.0 the divertor Te starts rising and the Mo stays constant.
Next shot 60%. |
| Feb 14 2012 06:10:25:523PM | 1120214031 | Bruce Lipschultz | 60% duty factor N injection starting 0.4. Unfotunately, the core H-mode was not stationary. But when it was in H-mode the Mo level was lower than the 20% and 40% cases. The divertor was deteched during the second H-mode that started at ~ 1.0s and then slowly attached as the N pumped away.
Next shot start high (40%) befor the RF and drop to 20% (0.7s). Also had the strike point higher - more near probe 5. |
| Feb 14 2012 06:12:04:043PM | 1120214032 | Bruce Lipschultz | Start N2 high (40%) before the RF and drop to 20% (0.7s). Often detached but it is not clear what is driving that.
