Session Leader: G. Wallace
Physics Operator: W. Rowan
MP: 605 LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher Checkout and Conditioning

LH Setup: Launcher ~3 mm behind GH limiter (1290 counts on PLC); 90 degree current-drive phasing; 200-1000 kW net power (~70-200 kW/klystron); LH on from 0.8 to 1.3s.

Reference shot: 1120127024 (5.4 T, 700 kA, USN)

Shot Plan:
1) Begin with co-current 90 degree ideal phasing. Set power level to 80 kW/klystron (half on direct fed columns) at 40 kV. Set pulse length to 0.5 s.

2) Increase power in increments of 10-20 kW/klystron. Pay particular attention to LH camera view. If arcing occurs, reduce power to last "safe" level and begin raising power again.

3) Adjust radial position of plasma and/or launcher if breakdown on grill mouth does not improve.

MP 633: Lower Hybrid Current Drive induced rotation at Different Magnetic Geometries

SL: Y. Podpaly
PO: W. Rowan

Plan: Run straight forward lower hybrid discharges tracking the rotation at different densities and magnetic fields, time permitting. The run is intended to confirm the relation between the Ohmic rotation reversal and the LHCD rotation reversal.

Diagnostics requested: HiReX Sr, HiReX Jr, Thomson, PCI, HXR, MSE

Basic set-up: 5.4 T, 700 kA, USN, nl04~0.4E20, cryopump on for density control
P_LHCD = 800 kW at n|| = 1.6 extended Lower Hybrid operation (starting at 500 ms and working up)

Base shot: 1110128009 or 1120127024. Extended flattop (to 1.6 seconds) requested for longer LHCD discharges.

Run plan:

1)Locked mode calibration for HiReX Sr (1120210004)
2)nl04~0.4E20 400 kA, 700 kA, 550 kA.
3)nl04~0.3E20 400 kA, 550 kA, 700 kA (possibly add another shot). At this density, depending on results, we will scan n|| to 1.9 and 2.3.
4)nl04~0.6E20 550 kA, 700 kA, 550 kA (possibly add other shots)
5)Depending on previous results: nl04~0.5 E20 scan
6)Time permitting magnetic field scan: 4.5T, 6.2 T at nl04~E20 400 kA, 550 kA, 700 kA
7)Tentative: locked mode calibration for HiReX Sr(1120210004)

Piggybacking: MSE piggybacking, polarimetry, Lyman alpha camera.
Possible current dither for polarimetry at later shots.

This was a difficult day, and the experiment was not accomplished, due to difficulties with LHCD, data system issues, and machine issues. None of the required scans could be performed at the necessary powers.

Nevertheless, some useful data were found. A 3 point current scan of locked modes was performed and it seems that the current does not affect the HiReX calibration significantly. More detailed analyses of these discharges are required to test the HireX Sr calibraiton. A single current scan at nl04~0.4E20 was performed, with the low current case not reproducing the previously observed results. This suggests that there may be a temperature affect in the LHCD rotation reversal, perhaps related through the collisionality. It was attempted to bring up the LHCD power late in the day to confirm this effect, and a few useful shots were taken with the rotation reversal point being identified at 600 kW at 500 kA. Higher density with 600 kW of LHCD at 500 kA was attempted, but it was not successful.

There appears to be more than originally met the eye with the LHCD induced rotation changes, seemingly on the collisionality side of things.

Thank you everyone for sticking with this run.

The run was for MP 633: Lower Hybrid Current Drive induced rotation at Different Magnetic Geometries (SL Podpaly) which was to be executed during LH conditioning: MP: 605 LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher Checkout and Conditioning (SL Wallace)

The requested discharges were easily acquired and ran well. The discharges for MP 633 consisted of a narrow scan in current (0.4 MA to 0.7 MA) and density in USN configuration at 5.4 T. The cryo pump was in use. Some data was acquired for MP 633 but more is required. The LH appears to require additional conditioning.

While the LH group was diagnosing control problems, there was an opportunity to continue the locked mode rotation calibration for a few extra shots. The locked mode shots are in the range 001 - 005.

For some shots (009-012), a current dither was added in the last 100 ms of the current flattop for polarimeter calibration.

There was a delay at the beginning of the run due to computer control of the LH. The run was extended to make up some of the lost time.
A few shots were lost due to IGOR being stuck.
A TF crowbar occurred late in the run.

Feb 15 2012 09:14:00:380AM1120215001Yuri PodpalyStart with 700 kA, standard flattop, USN, nl04=0.4E20, LHCD at 0.8 for 500 ms at 800 kW (n||=1.6) or as close as is possible.

Lower Hybrid having some digitizer issues. Contingency: locked mode first

Result: locked but HiReX Sr is low. LHCD still having issues and the RGA readings are off. Also Josh says to wait for the next shot.

Next: Repeat locked mode pending LHCD
Feb 15 2012 09:52:12:263AM1120215002Yuri PodpalyLocked mode with increased argon voltage.

Result: Locked mode; argon is much better. B side lower still looks choppy. Disrupts at 1.5 sec.

Next: LHCD is down for at least half an hour. Setting up 900 kA locked mode to test Sr sensitivity to locked modes.
Feb 15 2012 09:59:41:077AM1120215003Yuri Podpaly900 kA locked mode.
