Physop Summary for Thursday, Feb 16, 2012
MP#672 (cold pulses,rotation reversals, and non-diffusive transport)
SL: Rice
PO: wolfe
EO: Pfeiffer, Parkin, Byford
The machine ran well today, and we accomplished essentially everything
in the run plan. Density scans from LOC to SOC regime were obtained at
1.1MA and 0.55MA, shot to shot and with dynamic single shot scans using
the NINJA to raise the density and to get GPI spectra. Locked mode
calibration shots were run at both current extremes. The last couple
of shots were dynamic density scans at 0.8MA, with GPI.
Low densities were achieved without too much difficulty
without resorting to the USN cryopump option. The lowest density shots
were very non-thermal, with one synchrotron radiation case with nl04 below
2e19 at 550kA.
Note that, due to a communication breakdown, the overnight ECDC was done in
D2, and we only got one hour of Helium ECDC in the morning. This seems to
be completely satisfactory for getting to low density.
I managed to screw up the load on shot#15, accidentally turning on seg4
which was zeroed out and had a start time of -3.5sec, along with the
intended seg1 and seg2. This resulted in a dud (duh!) with all the
power supplies looking very strange before 0.1sec. I should add a
check to the build procedure to complain about simultaneous synchronous
segments. The next shot (#16) experienced the datalink failure that caused
the EF1's not to commutate. I would have blamed this on the preceding
bad load, but the switches did close at the right time, implying the
datalink fault came up during the pulse. Bill had been watching the
camera view of the EF1 cabinet and would not have entered init if the
fault light had been up at that time.
The TF cooling was rather slow today, partially because
we had to back off on the cooling several times due to the appearance
of leaks when the vessel temperature went down as far as 24C. The
signatures of the leak were exessive rga levels of Ar (mass 40) and
N2 (mass 28 and 14). The new big board display of rga levels was helpful
in alerting the PO and engineering team to these events. One source
was identified as a faulty heater on a blower unit under the machine,
but the leaks recurred later in the day, at a smaller level. There
were no fizzles due to these leaks.
There were several bad runaway shots as a result of the low density
operation, including at least one (#27) with a bright beam (which we have
attributed to synchrotron radiation) on the left side of the wide2 video
display. These did not trigger the dpcs_xjump shutdown only because the
high rates came up after the window from 0.1 to 0.5sec. If when we go in-
vessel in a week or two we find evidence of runaway damage, we should
consider extending this window, probably with a higher threshold, to
last through the shot. The reason for the preent window is that the
original threshold was such that it could be triggered by high-performance
DD neutron shots, or by intentional LHCD shots. However, the current
threshold is 1e15/sec (neutron rate equivalent count rate), which is more
than the current record for neutron rates. Note that the gate window is
easily reset from the dpcs_xjump procedure screen, in the PARAMETERS
structure, tagname GATE.

| Feb 16 2012 07:08:31:780AM | Steve Wolfe | Starting setup for Thursday, Feb 16, 2012 Unable to access the logbook web interface on cmodws50. It tries to go to alcserv1, and sits with a transferring data from alcserv1 message in the message pane. Got in ok through the old IDL interface. Others (EO station, Bill Rowan on another workstation are seeing it ok. Could have been because when I restored the firefox it brought up a dozen windows and one was prompting for a password, after I had alreaduy entered one on a different window. Blew it all away and restart firefox (after making this entry,) | |
| Feb 16 2012 07:45:29:020AM | Steve Wolfe | Ok, back into the web logbook interface in a fresh ff Overnight ECDC was done in D2 (communication failure), but got an hour of He ECDC in this morning. Should be ok, we'll see how it goes for the first shots at low density. Beginning first shot setup per the run plan Load from 1120215002, for the locked mode shot Locked mode shot is in seg3. Seg1 says "2012 non-cryopump startup", but it's got a 30msec puff on pg4. Change that to 18msec. Check out the rest of the startup. I think this is the startup that Bill used all day yesterday and Ian the day before, with good success. Rcur offset=3500 BR_0 offset=.001 IC_EF4u = -1330 at [-.496,-.005] That seems very negative? maybe it helps. pg3 has a spike at -.020 to 100, dropping to 50 and a 30% maint level through 0.1sec; even the 30V may put in too much gas for the lowest density case, but leave it for now . In seg3: The inherited locked mode shot. There is a wide pulse on H-bot piezo (pg5) that shouldn't be there. Get rid of that, and the ancient leftover AMHD_FREQ. That output is obsolete, I should get rid of it in the hybrid dpcs_config. The argon puff is 300msec at 60%. Don't know why, I guess that's what they asked for once upon a time; if it's been working don't fix it. For the rest of the run the plan says to load 1120106021 (seg2) and change the current. May as well go ahead and import it to seg2 now. Will also raise Btor to 5.6T for best FRCECE coverage, per SL. Seg 2 changes (from 1120106021 import): Change Ip from 800 to 1.1MA Change TF_CURRENT from -150kA to -156kA Load at 16-Feb-2012 07:45:13.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done | |
| Feb 16 2012 09:00:15:977AM | 1120216001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: locked mode attempt plasma disrupts at 1.5sec, looks like a good locked mode case clean breakdown fast current rise. Bz is negative, but I'm not going to argue as long as it keeps running. Did not get hirex_sr data, so we'll need to repeat it. Next: repeat, with hirex_sr this time |
| Feb 16 2012 09:08:34:597AM | 1120216002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: repeat locked mode attempt plasma disrupts at 1.5sec, locked mode on demand Cell access for PCI Hirex got data this time Next: move on to first shot of main program |
| Feb 16 2012 09:24:40:070AM | 1120216003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: move on to first shot of main program Seg 3 off, seg 2 on. this should be 1.1MA, nl04=3.5e19 reduce pg3 puff in seg 1 to zero (from 30) after .05sec note ef4 is already at 2500, should be ok for 1.1MA Load at 16-Feb-2012 09:12:52.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Result: plasma to 1.6sec, density drops to .3 and then comes up to 0.5 need to play with gains. No lbo this time |

Note ninja is coming in about 0.85, accounts for part of late rise needs more gas early, less late. Adjust nl04 demand and gains |

| Feb 16 2012 10:20:47:227AM | 1120216007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: ninja off, maybe reduce field for better ped coverage? Amanda suggests B=5.5, change tf_current to 153kA The outer FRCECE are very non-thermal, but it looks like later in the discharge there are two channels past the LCFS, so we drop the field to move in. Result: plasma to 1.55sec, disruption just into rampdown. Bt to 5.5T as requested, density flattish at 3.5 to 4 Next: raise nebar to 0.9 (nl04 to .52) |
| Feb 16 2012 10:33:59:033AM | 1120216008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: raise nebar to 0.9 (nl04 to .52) OH2's railed in rampdown on shot7, probably causing the disruption, so increase PLC limits to [-30,30] Load at 16-Feb-2012 10:22:03.00 Result: plasma full length density only 4.4 after higher early. Previous case may have had hollow Te, sawteeth started late; this one is normal, with overshooting density before 300msec Next: nl04 to .58, play with gains some more |
| Feb 16 2012 10:56:03:617AM | 1120216009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: raise nebar to 1. (nl04 to .58) Raise nl04 p gain to 3 for full shot recalculate nl04 predictor, to be sure I pick up latest TCI cal Load at 16-Feb-2012 10:38:15.00 Result: Disruption in rampdown 1.55sec, looks like a locked mode density still a little on the low side, about .51 instead of .58 It's asking for more, but maybe not enough. Could increase P gain, or add some I. Next: go for 1.1e20, nl04=.65e20 |
| Feb 16 2012 11:04:15:740AM | 1120216010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: go for 1.1e20, nl04=.65e20 Raise P gain on NL04 from 3 to 6 at .6sec Load at 16-Feb-2012 10:51:48.00 Result: plasma still disrupting in rampdown, 1.6sec Density still 10% low, only .59e20. I'll have to add to the demand, ask for 1.3 to get 1.2 nebar |
| Feb 16 2012 11:22:19:230AM | 1120216011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Ask for nl04=.75 to get .7 Load at 16-Feb-2012 11:06:13.00 Getting an air leak, back off on the cooling leak coming down, argon still at 5.5e-8, m28 down to 3.7e-8 at Init NINJA will puff Result: plasma full length Got .7e20 before the ninja puff, then up to 0.8e20 by 1.5sec rotation reversed but central ece still shows non-diff rise Next: go for nebar=1.4e20 before ninja |
| Feb 16 2012 11:41:44:127AM | 1120216012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Ask for nl04=.87 to get .8; some I gain might help with this, but this is just as easy. Load at 16-Feb-2012 11:24:05.00 leak seems to be gone for now But the cooling is slow, because they backed down the pump I guess I'd rather have it slow than leaking. Result: plasma full length, .82 before the ninja still going up in the core, maybe with a drop before. Next: aim for nebar=1.6 |
| Feb 16 2012 11:59:49:013AM | 1120216013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Ask for nl04=.96, dropping to .9 at 1.4 since NINJA is going anyway Load at 16-Feb-2012 11:44:17.00 Argon up on the high e-8 scale again, backing down the cooling argon coming down from 1e-7! m28 is only at 3e-8. Could bside-l have a through leak? Coming down now, should be ready Result: plasma full length nl04=9e19 pre-ninja, a little higher after argon down on the 10 scale after the shot, vessel temp at 25 Core channels now going down. Next: Going higher in density, nebar-> 1.8e20 |
| Feb 16 2012 12:31:34:180PM | 1120216014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Ask for nl04=1.07, dropping to .9 at 1.4 since NINJA is going anyway decrease pg4 from 20 to 19msec, because Ip rise is getting a little slow Load at 16-Feb-2012 12:05:26.00 Allow a cell access so vac can check that all the blowers are in and see if anything is freezing up. We've got another leak Leak closed at 20minutes into recool, vessel temp up to 28C They found and replaced a dead heater blower under the machine. Time to go for a shot. INIT after 30min in recool Result:plasma full length (almost, got to 1.8sec) nl04=1.04e20, frcece dropping in core Next: program nebar=1.0, let Ninja puff it up. |
| Feb 16 2012 12:42:09:850PM | 1120216015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Ask for nl04=.64 flat, NINJA puff will raise it for scan Load at 16-Feb-2012 12:34:20.00 Result: dud, all power supplies at low current!? |
| Feb 16 2012 12:53:59:167PM | 1120216015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Ask for nl04=.64 flat, NINJA puff will raise it for scan Load at 16-Feb-2012 12:34:20.00 Result: dud, all power supplies at low current!? DPCS commands look strange. physaout's look ok, mouts aren't asking for voltage? looks like a timing proble, maybe I see the problem. Somehow seg4 is also turned on, and it has zeros everywhere and a start time of -3.5sec Fumble fingers! This is a new pcs unguarded error to check for Next: get the right segments loaded. I'm having trouble hitting the wrong buttons! Set seg4 off, with start at .1 anyway. Take dpcs test shot 101 to be sure |

| Feb 16 2012 02:11:02:983PM | 1120216021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: decrease argon from 200ms to 150ms decrease nl04 demand between .3 and .4sec Load at 16-Feb-2012 14:03:59.00 We are now seeing an N2 leak (m28 to 6.7e-8 with no accompanying m40 or m32) run it anyway Result: plasma full length nl04=2.7e19, some runaways after .8sec cold to heat pulses on this one Next: Drop nl04 even further (or try to) |
| Feb 16 2012 02:25:11:630PM | 1120216022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: nl04 to 1e19 from .4sec on Load at 16-Feb-2012 14:13:10.00 leak is getting worse, now seeing argon on 9 scale as well argon down again, m28 at 9.7e-8 at INIT, may fizzle Result: plasma full length, runaways nl04 down to 2.4e19, not sure I can get it any lower MHD event on ece at .23sec, looks like a locked mode for the whole shot Next: raise nebar to 0.5 (nl04=3e19) |
| Feb 16 2012 02:42:44:307PM | 1120216023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23:nl04 to 3e19 Load at 16-Feb-2012 14:26:18.00 TF scanner temp has been ratcheting up, waiting a little longer m28 is still at 6.9e-8 at INIT at 16 minutes in recool Result: plasma full length, still nonthermals nl04 = 3e19, with some wiggles First two look diffusive cold pulse, third one maybe a little rise in the core Next: leave programming, and let NINJA go on next shot |
| Feb 16 2012 02:59:12:757PM | 1120216024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24:nl04 to 3e19, but NINJA will fire on this one No pcs changes Result: early disruption, something came in at 0.3sec May have been hit by that mhd thrash, seems to be going vertically before the injection. Next:I'm going to give it a little more early gas |
| Feb 16 2012 03:10:23:670PM | 1120216025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: raise nl04 at .4 sec to 4e19 (from 3e19), leaving 3e19 in flattop Load at 16-Feb-2012 15:00:41.00 Result: plasma full length, got lbo's got the ninja ramp all three injections look like diffusive cold pulses Next: Back to the lower density case and try it again |
| Feb 16 2012 03:28:15:703PM | 1120216026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26:reload from 22, which has programming for 1e19 and got down to 2.4 Decrease the point at .275sec from 5 to 3e19 Load at 16-Feb-2012 15:13:49.00 Leak is opening up again, back pump down to 3psi again Result:plasma full length, runaways up but not terrible nl04 2.8e19, down to 2e19 before first lbo No D2 gas puff in seg2 Next: repeat, see if density comes down a little more |
| Feb 16 2012 03:48:48:313PM | 1120216027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27:repeat, see if density comes down a little more Result: plasma disrupts near eof, lots of runaways, saturating neuts/hards nl04 down to 1.7e19 until last lbo, then it rises to 4e19 Phaser on kill Next: ask for a little more density, then have ninja puff |
| Feb 16 2012 04:11:05:400PM | 1120216028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: increase nl04 to 2e19, NINJA puff should come in at .9sec Load at 16-Feb-2012 15:51:51.00 Result: plasma full length, nl04 starts at 1.9e19, saturating runaways, then ninja puffs up to 5e19 and runaways come down. This ought to give them what they want, if the low density non-thermal phase can be interpreted. There's a locked mode until at least 1.1sec Next: ? |
| Feb 16 2012 04:26:26:403PM | 1120216029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: locked mode shot (seg3 on seg2 off) Load at 16-Feb-2012 16:15:58.00 plasma to eof, got locked mode Next: 800kA, nebar~0.7e20 ramping to 0.9 with ninja |
| Feb 16 2012 04:47:44:900PM | 1120216030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: 800kA, nebar~0.7e20 (nl04=.42e20) ramping to 0.9 with ninja leave ic_ef4u at 2000 for 800kA Seg 3 off, Seg 2 on Load at 16-Feb-2012 16:27:34.00 Result: plasma full length, some runaways Got the density ramp, got the lbo's, looks like cold pulses for all 3 Next: repeat with 200ms of argon |
| Feb 16 2012 05:03:22:233PM | 1120216031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31:repeat with 200ms of argon Load at 16-Feb-2012 16:48:43.00 Result: plasma full length. LBO gave six injections. Ramp looks good. SL is happy. End of Run |
