MP667: Commissioning of new SOL probes

The goal of this run is to get a base data set of SOL parameters measured with the A-port Scanning Probe (ASP) Ion Sensitive Probe (ISP). The ISP should be able to plunge to the LCFS in ohmic plasmas. It would be a great tool to expand the standard SOL measurements to plasma potential and ion temperature. Although the work of Roman has shown an ISP is a good measurement of plasma potential, its measurements of ion temperature have yet to be robustly bench-marked. Thus this run day will be repeated with the ASP Retarding Field energy Analyzer (RFA); a diagnostic the community is confident can measure ion temperature, yet is limited to the depth it may scan because of heat flux.

The ion temperature has typically been measured to be around 2 times greater than the electron temperature in low collisionality SOLs. This is because electron thermal conductivity is much higher than ion thermal conductivity. But, as collisionality increases (as shown by Kocan), the ions transfer their energy to the electron through collisions and the electrons then conduct it along the field to the divertor. Thus the ion temperature should converge on the electron temperature as core plasma density increases.

The run will start with setting up the base plasma (5.4 T, 0.8 MA, 0.4×1020 m-2, 1111208013), making sure that the right gap is optimized for the scanning probe. A few shots will be taken (<5) to get the probe to the LCFS (Te=50 eV). Then we'll begin the density scan, stepping by 0.2×1020 m-2 until 1.6×1020 m-2, making sure to get at least one good scan at every density (7-14 shots). This is the most important part of the run to complete.

Time permitting change plasma current and do another density scan (adjusting n/nG appropriately).

Piggybacking: there have been a lot of requests to piggyback on this run. LH won out and may fire into the plasma after the last probe scan (1.2 s) as long as it doesn't hurt the next plasma and they don't spend too much time in the cell. BLaB will also be running the F-port probe to collect data for Odd Eric.

This was a very useful run for the ASP ISP. It was great to have a steady, controlled target to probe. I scanned it to Te > 70 eV on some shots. The Collector data is great at the lower densities. Initial results show a definite ion temperature profile, greater than twice the electron temperature. At higher densities I learned of the current system's short comings: The Guard collects too high of an electron current. Its supply is limited to ~0.5 A, when this is exceeded the voltage does not match the programmed. Thus the bias is not sufficient to reject ions. To remedy this I will switch to a power supply with double the current limit. Also, I will try a version of the ISP head with the Guard recessed slightly (~0.1 mm?) behind the base. I'll also work on a modified version of the Floating Base to switch its wire to a Langmuir probe. This will be useful to detect blobs and normalize the Collector current.

Additionally Brian operated the WASP and FSP to collect blobly data for Odd Eric. There were a few dedicated shots where the ISP was dwelled in Isat to fill in Odd' density scan. Ninja was fired at the end of each shot.

LH was allowed to pulse after the last probe scan. Greg reported very low densities, even when the launcher was pushed in to its limit. Its operation today showed that it likely will not be useful for runs next week.

Thanks everyone!

Machine ran well today except for a leak in the H-hor inner seal. We
had to slow or stop cooling several times. We opened up the cell to
verify that it was the seal and went from pumping to purging the seal
with argon after shot 22. We then had two fizzles (23,24) as we got the
argon levels in the vessel down to an acceptable level (see logbook).

We lost a digitizer in the magnetics rack and had to stop operation to
replace it. Test shot 04, 05, and 06, with 50 kA TF only, were required
to verify that the signals were ok.
