| MP671 "Investigation of dilution effects on turbulence and transport in low density ohmic plasmas"
The purpose of this run is to investigate the result that diluting the main ion species of the plasma with some lower Z ions results in reduced ion transport without having significant effects on electron transport. This will be done by measuring the impurity content of unseeded plasmas with the newly calibrated impurity diagnostics (based on MP 687) and then seeding the plasmas with Nitrogen in order to dilute the main ions by at least 15-20% (the level at which we see the effects on transport). Locked mode shots will be taken to calibrate HIREX-SR. This MP was previously run on 1120210XXX, but Thomson problems limited how good the data was in the early part of that day and since accurate profiles are critical to this MP they needed to be re-ran. I would also like to get in a few more shots to complete my density scan. It would be better to run this later in the day so that Thomson profiles are more accurate. Working Gas = D2 B = 5.4 T Ip = 800 kA NINJA: 8 PSI He^4 puff @ 1.4s (for GPI if J. Terry is around for it, if not don't puff) H-Bot: 1.5 psi Ar puff @ 0.4s for 75 ms @ 100 V (for HIREX-SR) B-Lower: 15 psi N2, voltages and duration to change with shots (typically 30V from 0.7-1.3s) Equilibrium based on: Shot 1120210003 (Upper null) Cryopump ON DNB ON (if possible, not critical) Shot Sequence: * indicates high priority parts Part 1 (1 shot) = HIREX-SR locked mode. | Run Summary for MP671:"Investigation of dilution effects on turbulence and transport in low density ohmic plasmas"
The purpose of running today was to get better profile data and fill in some of the holes in parameter space from the last run for MP671 on 1120210XXX. MP677 took the first 7 shots and after that the liquid helium had to be replaced for the cryopump. We had shaping problems early on and that was found to be the result of a faulty flux loop (F13). After this was fixed, a few shots without Argon puffing were required to check things out. Shot 17 was the first good plasma shot. Despite these issues, we were able to get several good shots. I was able to get my seeded density scan and the highest density unseeded case. We also saw a few rotation reversals induced by nitrogen puffing on shots 21 and 25. Though it appears that there is a narrow window between puffing enough nitrogen in a plasma to induce a rotation change and not puffing so much that you get detachment. Perhaps at higher current this window would be wider, but then the density would have to go up to get a plasma in the saturated regime. | Data was acquired for two miniproposals MP677, "Micro-proposal for Faraday Rotation Tests" and MP671 "Investigation of dilution effects on turbulence and transport in low density Ohmic plasmas" There were a couple of issues. There was a pause after completing MP677 while the cryopump was refilled with LHe. MP671 required the cryo. A flux loop (F13) became intermittent and required zapping.
The first experiment was based on MP677, "Micro-proposal for Faraday Rotation Tests" and was completed successfully in shots 001-007. These were no-plasma shots with TF or with EF4. The second experiment was based on MP671 "Investigation of dilution effects on turbulence and transport in low density Ohmic plasmas" At the beginning of this part of the run, it was found that shot 1120210012 could not be reproduced. This was traced to flux loop f13 which was intermittent. Willy and Steve zapped it and brought it back to life. This occupied shots 008-014. During the remainder of this run, data was acquired to partially complete the work started during run 1120210. score card 07 no plasma, TF only, EF4 only 20 plasma -------- 27 total |
