================================================== Purpose: The primary objective of this experiment is two-fold: (1) studying the plasma density dependence of divertor geometry effect on H-mode threshold power and plasma behaviors close to L-H transition in (2) characterizing the density and divertor geometry dependence of GAM-like low-frequency (~3KHz) plasma fluctuation preceding and near the onset of L-H transition. ********************************************* ********************************************* Machine Operation Parameters: Gas: D2 Bt/Ip: 5.4T/1.0MA L-mode target nl04 (10^20m^-2): 0.35-0.45, 0.7-0.8, 1.1-1.2 ICRF: up to ~3.0MW Cryopump: on ********************************************** ********************************************** Diagnostics Requirement: Profiles: TS (edge+core), ECE (GPC1, GPC2, FRC), Hirex (Ar), CXRS (providing DNB working), X-mode reflectometry, divertor probes, Ly edge Fluctuations: O-mode reflectometry (in particular 50~88GHz), magnetic coils, PCI, GPI (providing J.Terry on site) ********************************************** ********************************************** Shot Sequence (20~24 shots): Part 1, nl04~0.35 (8~10 shots): Load target shot from 1120209012: nl04~0.35, Bt=5.3T, Ip=1MA, vertical-plate divertor, Prf implemented at 0.6s and linearly ramped up to ~3.0MW before terminated at 1.4s. After the target shot is successfully repeated, the run will proceed to develop H-mode at low density (nl04~0.4) with slot divertor geometry. Based on experience gained from previous experiments, this magnetic configuration can be realized by decreasing (2~3cm) RXL and/or ZXL while maintaining the shaping (elongation, triangularity, etc) nearly fixed. The phys op may reference the magnetic geometry of shot 1101221012 to get some direction. To ensure the maximum likelihood of H-mode access, the same RF wave form as of the target shot (1120209012) will be used (ramp-up to ~3.0MW). One major foreseen difficulty based on what we encountered in the past, is how to maintain the strike point in the slot through the discharge to before L-H transition, while the RF power is continuously raised and the flux swing tend to move the strike point up to the vertical plate. Considering the potential impedance, it might take a few (2~3) discharges to successfully establish this scenario. After a low density L-H transition with slot divertor is successfully produced and repeated, the session leader will evaluate the threshold power. The next stage then is to iterate between vertical-plate and slot divertor for 4~6 shots to collect sufficient (statistically meaningful) plasma data from various C-Mod diagnostics. If necessary, the RF wave form may be programmed in staircase close to Pth for each divertor geometry to optimize the diagnostics performance. Approximately 3~5 shots are aimed in each divertor geometry by the end of this part (6~10 shots in total). Part 3, nl04~1.1 (6~8 shots): Increase target density to nl04~1.1 and repeat part 1. Part 4, nl04~0.8 (~6 shots): set target density to nl04~0.8 and repeat part 1. |

| Today's run went faily well despite many fizzles and disruptions in the first 2/3 of the expreriment. Totally 17 plasmas were produced, 14 of them have clear L-H transition in the Ip flattop. Most of the transitions were realized with the slot divertor, and cover a reasonably broad density range of 0.8~2.2n20. The run has reproduced the earlier observation of H-mode threshold power reduction in slot divertor operation at moderate- to high-density, while it seems at low density, the H-mode threshold power with slot divertor could be similar to the value with vertical-plate divertor operation. More analysis will be carried out. |
