Tuesday, May 1, 2012 MP 298a Plasma startup and conditioning ----------------- Engineering Setup ----------------- Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 We will want to take at least one gas and data system test cycle before 9AM. There is some possibility that the first plasma shot may be delayed while Josh modifies some additional nodes in the engineering tree. Power systems as on: 1120427032 Acoil: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot (standard) Hybrid Enabled Gas setup: Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave H-bot as is (empty) Hybrid DISABLED (PG5,PG6,PG7) fill NINJA with 10 psi D2 DISABLED Enable gate-valves and shutters: ECE, VUV, HiREX Sr, Xeus/LoWEUS Leave z-bolo shutter as is (should be open) Torvac gatevalve toggle (yes/no): no Boronization(yes/no): no Overnight ECDC (yes/no): YES ICRF(yes/no): IN STANDBY LH(yes/no): no Cryopump (yes/no): no DNB (yes/no): no Vessel temperature: 35/35/35 ------------------------------ ECDC Parameters (if requested) ------------------------------ gas and pressure: D2 at 2e-4 Torr sweep: 44/45/103 cm scan: 20/120 s Physop Plan ------------ The main goal today is to get reproducible ohmic plasmas and begin machine conditioning and cleanup. We will start with LSN plasma as on 1120427. If things go smoothly, then we will change over to upper null discharges to begin conditioning the upper shelf. Diagnostic checkout can piggyback if desired. ICRF may choose to begin checking out the antennas if we are successful in getting reliable startups. Start with a gas test. Note that Tommy will have changed out the B-main piezo, so it may work without programming an extra-wide seg1 PG3 puff. Take plasma program from 1120427032 (Ip=800kA, Bt=5.45T, nl04=8e19,LSN) Make some minor tweaks to move the strike points around. If full length pulses are obtained with some regularity, allow Argon puffing for HIREX. Allow NINJA puffing (D2) as requested. Increase nl04 program to a level with significant D2 puff from pg3 during shot. Monitor H/D, Zave. If time permits, change to USN discharge. Possible reference shot is 1120221008. Probably need to adjust nl04 feedback for non-cryopump operation. Repeat conditioning sequence aiming for reproducible full length 800kA discharges. |

Not a bad conditioning run.
The new B-main piezo valve did not seem to be an improvement,
and we took three gas test pulses to get it to open reliably.
It finally worked with an 80msec long 100V pulse.
It may be a good idea to do another gas test tomorrow.
The first plasma attempt was shot#4, which was successful, but
had some runaways.
We were getting reliable startups and full length plasmas early in the
day, less so after some disruptions as we went along. Target nl04
was increased to 9e19 in an effort to get more D2 into the system.
H/D started in the 0.3 range and then increased to 0.5 to 0.6; it
may have come down a little later in the day. M3/M4 on the RGA was around 1,
consistent with the spectroscopic measurement. There were numerous disruptions
in rampdown, but only a couple of flattop disruptions. These seemed to bring
up a lot of hydrocarbons (especially M16). Shot#28 disrupted hard
just into rampdown, and led to a series of fizzles.
I did some playing with strikepoints, but never got to trying the USN
cases. See logbook entries for details.
Runaways were a problem early in the day. PG4 got increased up to 22msec,
and the back porch on the pg3 in seg1 up to 60V. For much of the day
EF4 was at -1290. After the big disruption PG4 went back to 17msec
and EF4 back to -1300. However, #33 fizzled again, so pg4 was set back to 19
for the last attempt, which started well and disrupted at EOF, with a
vertical instability possibly brought on by increasing li.
TF cooling was somewhat problematic again today. The Aright vertical
seems not to be getting good coolant flow.
