MP667 Commissioning of SOL Probes The purpose of this run is to shake down the new ASP Retarding Field Analyzer (RFA). This probe is well accepted for measuring the ion temperature, but is limited in scan depth. The Ion Sensitive Probe (ISP) can scan deep, but is not as accepted for measuring the ion temperature. The RFA will be used to benchmark the ISP where it can. We'll begin with 1120217011 from the previous run with the ISP. Take a shot to ensure proper targeting. Then start pushing the probe in. Cell access may be required between shots to adjust the electronics. Once the RFA is operating properly, we'll begin a density scan; notching up by ~0.2×1020 m-2 per shot. LH has requested a piggy-back, they may fire after the third probe scan is done (1.3 s).

Got some good data; demonstrated that the A-port scanning probe retarding field analyzer could operate properly. Will analyze the data in the coming days. Found out that there is an arcing/shorting problem in the scanning RFA that does not exihst in the limiter RFA. Will have to improve insulation.

We had two fizzles following a locked mode disruption; not hard to understand. But we had several more unexplained fizzles during the run. Near the end of the run we began to toggle between plasmas and fizzles. I only tried small prefill gas changes, but ef4 tweaks may have been more helpful. For shot 14 a locked mode shot was loaded (1120502009) into segment 4. I then forgot to turn off seg 2 and turn on seg 4, resulting in a repeat of shot 13. On shot 15 I think I corrected the error, but we still got a repeat of shot 13. PCS did not properly handle the changes. Steve Wolfe suggested we exit PCS and then restart it. When it came back up seg 2 was still on and seg 4 was off. So we toggled them again and verified that the changes were properly indicated in the PCS log and the files. After a runaway shot on shot 16, we finally got the locked mode shot on 17. Only other tweak of note was RCUR change to move the plasma out a few mm to help with LH coupling on shot 10. Seems to have helped. LH worked up to 350 kW or so today, with rc < 20%. plasma 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,20,21,22 23,24,25,26,28 fizzle 18,19,23,27,29
