MP700 Edge CXRS Dalpha Diagnotic Cross-Calibration

The primary purpose of these experiements is to cross-calibrate the low field side (LFS) and highfield side (HFS) photodiode systems used to measure Dalpha for the edge CXRS system. For this purpose, they are both setup to measure Dalpha emission on the HFS periscope.

In a first step, establish L-mode plasmas. Adjust the left gap for optimal coverage of the Dalpha views.
A number of cell accesses will be required in the following to setup different connections of the two photodiode systems.

ICRF and possibly LH will be piggy-backing for conditioning.

Difficult startup with a lot of fizzles (shots 3-10), then good plasmas

Managed to do all the configurations for the Dalpha diode calibrations as planned for MP700 (could do all configurations several times).

locked mode shut not successful (shot 27)
shots at higher density not successful
inner gap variations (shots 31-32) successful

The run went relatively well today although the fizzle rate was
somewhat high. Also I battled early runaways much of the day. In
addition a computer hang-up involving a loss of access to model trees
occurred around 10:30, resulting in some no-power tests and a
half-hour delay in progress.

After a good gas test and a successful reload of 1120503001, the next
5 plasma attempts were all fizzles, suggesting no improvement at all
from yesterday's struggles. The tendency to fizzle was not helped by
tweaks to EF4U and fill gas. Finally, Steve Wolfe recommended
significant changes to the programed EF3 and OH1 voltages before and
around 0.02s, in order to accelerate field penetration. This actually
worked, and led to a sequence of non-fizzles (shots 010--020). Early
runaways were a problem on some of these discharges. Tweaks to the
pre-fill and to the PG3 puff at t=0 were ineffective in moderating
this. However, moving the start of the PG3 maintenance puff earlier
did seem to have a positive effect. I did this beginning with shot
018. After this there were mostly good startups, with a few fizzles
thrown in.

SLs had several cell accesses to modify their fiber arrangement and
allow cross calibration of their CXRS channels. In the latter part of
the run we obtained density scans and an inner gap scan for further
CXRS shakedown.

We attempted a locked mode calibration for the HIREXSR on shot 027,
but this was one of our fizzles.

Tally:
19 plasmas into rampdown
1 early disruption
10 fizzles
3 no power tests

Josh reparied the obvious problems and we attempted a no-power shot following
shot 6.

NPT not successful. Shot number didn't advance.

More significant changes now. Dr. Wolfe is on call.

In seg 1 raise EF3_VOLT to 3000 at 0.02 and 0.026s.
Then in seg 1 lower OH1_VOLT control points from 0 to 0.02s by about 50V.
This should improve the field penetration during early ramp-up.
