Run plan for MP693 (05/16/2012)
'Validating the inter-shot calibration technique for MSE diagnostics' Parts d and e. Part f will be run at a later date with swapped filters.
==================================================

Purpose:
Overall this MP is to validate the new inter-shot calibration (ISC) technique and hardware. Specifically today we'll be running parts e and d (in that order) of the MP. This involves (e) a plasma size ramp and two plasma current scans at two different sizes and (d) a set of 6 field only shots. This will obtain the polarization-pitch angle offset (e, size scan) for the outer MSE channels and the polarization-pitch angle dependence (e, current scan) for a few channels. We will also obtain the Faraday rotation in the optics (d).

**********************************************

Shot Sequence (9~12 shots):

Part e, size scan. (1 shot nominally, likely 2)
Load target shot from 1101207007, modify to bring magnetics up to date.
DNB timing should be at 60-40 on/off starting at 0.4s for all of part e.

We'll be running MSE analysis between shots and the ISC system will actuate immediately after shots. We'll need to make sure the MSE data looks good and the ISC system hit its target positions on each shot before moving on. If both conditions are not met we'll need to repeat.

Part e, current scan at two sizes (2 shots nominally, likely 4)
Load new shot at full size with a current scan from 0.9MA-0.3MA. Density 0.7e20 nel04. Any recent full size shot can be modified.
1 shot with MSE and ISC operating correctly.

Load new shot with R=0.625 and a=0.185 with a current scan from 0.6-0.25MA. Density 0.7e20 nel04. 1 shot with MSE and ISC operating correctly.

Then we'll move on to part d, tests for Faraday rotation.
These are no TF, no DNB, just EF shots, no EF2. MSE ISC will not operate after shots.
Cell access to position MSE ISC system at WGP pos B,. (make sure 5th LED lit, position locked).
The EF coils will come on and stay on and then turn off.
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at 4.6
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at -4.6
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at 2.0
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at -0.5

Then enter cell and move MSE ISC to postion C
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at 4.6
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at -4.6

If time permits:
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at 2.0
1 shot: EF3 at 10.0, EF4 at -0.5

If there is remaining time we would repeat the current scan at full size to check repeatability and then do a current scan at an intermediate size.

MSE run went well.

Run was handed over at 1:00pm and we broke for an hour to reinstall the source in the beam. (which showed no signs of damage)

We switched up the run plan to do part d (Faraday rotation) first, giving the beam time to condition up.

First set of shots was for the MSE Faraday rotation calibration.

At WGP pos B.
13 condition A (large Bvert invessel, small Brad external)
14 condition B (small Bvert invessel, large Brad external)
15 condition C (intermediate)
16 condition D (intermediate)

At WGP pos C.
17 condition A (large Bvert invessel, small Brad external)
18 condition B (small Bvert invessel, large Brad external)

Quick overplotting shows the MSE signals make sense and are within 50% of what we expect given the published Verdet constants. Changing the WGP angle shows the Verdet rotation is a pure addition. The invessel lens takes longer to responds as we would expect and has a channel dependence, the external lenses have little to no channel dependence.

The data also so a several tenths drift between the shots, presumably due to the birefringence in the vacuum window.

Next we moved on to the calibration of MSE with plasmas. First shot was 19 which was a plasma ramp with no beam. MSE ISC operated fine.

Next we did a repeat (20) with beam, everything worked well.

Moved on to a current scan at near full size (21) but MSE ISC didn't hit ISC WGP D. Repeat (22) and everything worked well.

Moved on to current scan at small size (after 5:00pm) went vertically unstable early. Beam and MSE ISC still went. (not that it was any consolation).

These three discharges (20,22,23 w/ edits) represent a set of MSE calibration discharges for future use.

Run summary for Wednesday 2012/05/16

MP605 (am) - LH commissioning
MP693 (pm) - Validating inter-shot calibration technique for MSE diagnostics

Session leaders: G. Wallace (am)
                 R. Mumgaard (pm)
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The first half of the day we ran vanilla plasmas, but at very low density
for the LH. Many shots had large amounts of hard x-rays early in the shot
(i.e. even before the LH turned on), with relativistic radiation observed
on a number of shots, and several shots were terminated early by the
control system because of excessive hard x-rays. We tried a number of
things during startup to reduce this, and the most effective was simply
raising the PG4 pre-fill by more than a factor of 2 (to 40 ms). By shot
12, the early hard x-rays were nearly gone. The LH operated pretty cleanly
at powers up to 350 kW.

We then switched to Bob Mumgaard's run. Shots 13-18 were no-plasma shots
with just EF3 and EF4 energized under DPCS control. Shots 19 & 20 scanned
the outer edge of the plasma past a number of MSE channels while
simultaneously ramping down Ip to keep q95 constant. The DNB was firing
into plasmas for the MSE, starting with shot 20. Shots 21 & 22 were also
Ip ramps, but fixed plasma position. Shot 23 was an attempt at a small
plasma on the inboard wall, but it disrupted early due to vertical
instability. We'll need to try this shot again the next time we run this
MP.

No fizzles, duds, or computer problems today!

Scorecard: 17 plasmas
            0 duds
            0 fizzles

May 16 2012 09:43:43:227AM1120516001Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 40 kW/klystron, 90 deg phasing. 175 kW net power. Next shot increase to 60 kW/klystron.
May 16 2012 09:58:58:520AM1120516002Greg WallaceAnother clean LH pulse. Looks like a hot spot on inner wall tile during rampup and rampdown. LH looks good, though. Not much density rise during LH. Increase to 80 kW/klystron.
May 16 2012 10:10:38:483AM1120516003Greg WallaceEarly shutdown due to runaways. Glowing on midplane tiles of LH limiter but launcher looks OK.
May 16 2012 10:29:12:190AM1120516004Greg WallaceClean LH pulse. Reflection coefficient rises a bit towards the end of the pulse. Next shot will remain at 80 kW/klystron, 90 deg phasing with increase to 0.75 s pulse length.
May 16 2012 10:49:18:277AM1120516005Greg WallaceRunaway shutdown.

May 16 2012 12:28:12:407PM1120516008Greg Wallace80 kW/klystron, 40kV. Clean LH pulse at 350 kW, 750 ms. Some funny behavior towards the end of the pulse. Drop in LH probe density causes increase in reflections, but no clear cause. Will try again at this pulse length to see if it happens again.
May 16 2012 12:37:10:443PM1120516009Greg WallaceAnother clean LH pulse at 80 kW/klystron, 40 kV, 750 ms. Similar increase in refco late in the pulse as on shot 8. Next shot will move LH pulse earlier (0.6-1.35 s).
May 16 2012 12:46:38:773PM1120516010Greg WallaceAnother clean LH pulse at 40 kV, 80 kW/klystron, 750 ms. Still some increase in noise on reflection coefficient towards end of the pulse, but less than before. Next shot will move LH pulse to 0.5-1.4 s.

Early runaway problem seems to be fixed?
May 16 2012 01:07:11:427PM1120516011Greg WallaceGood shot at 900 ms! Next shot will repeat at the same timing to see if the density rise during LH continues.
May 16 2012 01:15:26:397PM1120516012Greg WallaceAnother good shot at 900 ms. LH ran clean. Increase in refco noise after 1.3 s. Turning run over to Bobby Mums.

May 16 2012 09:04:10:043AMRobert Granetz
In preparation for Bob Mumgaard's run during the 2nd half of today, I've preloaded one of the
shots he requested (from 1101207007, seg 2) into segment 3. This is the shot that scans the
outer gap (actually scans the outer edge location across the MSE channels) while also keeping
q constant by ramping down Ip at the same time. I have re""call""ed all the Bp- and flux-based
estimators as well, so it's ready to go.

May 16 2012 09:48:59:013AM1120516001Robert Granetz
Shot 01 -- Plasma, good shot, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.4e20 m-2, LSN
P_LH = 0.17 MW. Lots of hard x-ray before and during LH.

Next shot: no DPCS changes; enable B-side-lower valve (Ar, 70 ms)

May 16 2012 10:06:04:873AM1120516002Robert Granetz
Shot 02 -- Plasma, good shot, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.4e20 m-2, LSN
P_LH = 0.26 MW. Lots of hard x-rays before and during LH.
           Relativistic emission.

Next shot: tweak early & late nl_04 programming, and increase nl_04 gain to try
keeping density a bit higher early & late

May 16 2012 10:14:54:210AM1120516003Robert Granetz
Shot 03 -- Plasma, short pulse because it was shutdown early due to lots of runaways.

Next shot: increase pre-fill pulse by 3 ms

May 16 2012 10:44:46:797AM1120516004Robert Granetz
Shot 04 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.4e20 m-2, LSN, P_LH = 0.35 MW
Lots of relativistic emission. Since the first shot there's been a
glowing/exploding spot on the midplane of the inboard wall at F-port.

Next shot: no DPCS changes

May 16 2012 11:44:28:370AM1120516005Robert Granetz

May 16 2012 12:22:08:720PM1120516008Robert Granetz
Shot 08 -- Plasma, full length, but still lots of early hard x-rays. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.4e20 m-2, LSN
           P_LH = 0.35 MW

Now back to plasma operation, loading from 1101207007 (sweep outer edge past MSE channels, and
ramp Ip to keep q95 constant during the sweep). All Bp and flux-based predictors have been
re""call""ed.

May 16 2012 04:24:12:187PM1120516019Robert Granetz
Shot 19 -- Plasma, good shot. Scanned outer edge past many MSE channels, and ramped Ip down
to keep q95 nearly constant. Disrupted late in shot because OH2L hit its PLC limit.

Next shot: repeat; increase both OH2 limits to 30 kA

May 16 2012 04:37:02:117PM1120516020Robert Granetz
Shot 20 -- Plasma, good shot. Scanned outer edge past many MSE channels, and ramped Ip down
to keep q95 nearly constant. Disrupted late in shot because OH2L hit its PLC limit.
This time we had the DNB firing into plasma.

Next shot: switch to an Ip ramp in a standard plasma with fixed position.

May 16 2012 04:52:15:977PM1120516021Robert Granetz
Shot 21 -- Plasma, good shot. Ip ramped down from 0.9 MA to 0.3 MA. DNB fired into plasma.
MSE ISC system didn't go. Need to repeat.

Next shot: repeat, no changes

May 16 2012 05:01:09:327PM1120516022Robert Granetz
Shot 22 -- Plasma, good shot. Ip ramped from 0.9 to 0.3 MA. DNB worked. MSE worked.

Next shot: set up small-size limiter plasma with Ip ramp from -0.6 to 0.25 MA

May 16 2012 05:27:39:280PM1120516023Robert Granetz
Shot 23 -- Plasma, but disrupted very early due to vertical instability.

End of run
