SL: mlreinke PO: irby This run day will be used to verify proper alignment and operation of HIREXSR in preparation for the start of physics operation. Repeatable Ohmic plasmas will be run, adjusting HIREXSR internally (focusing/masking/etc). This will likely not need the entire flattop to gather sufficient photons per shot so ~1/2 the flattop is free to be used for RF conditioning or other piggyback experiments with the restriction that shot-to-shot repeatability not be substantially impacted. | We completed the primary goal of the run-day which was to demonstrate the focus of the He-like and H-like systems. We lost a chunk of run-time in the mid afternoon due to a strong of fizzles that prevented the masking tests from being completed, but we got a single data point which should be sufficient to start with. We might need to piggyback on some other repeatable shots if there are outstanding questions. We never got to the Ip/Bt scan of the locked modes which I think needs to turn into it's own 1/2-day MP at some point.
The biggest headache of the day came with the early failure of the HIREXSR translation stage control computer. The spectrometer is designed to be able to move the detectors and rotate the crystals remotely, making this type of run relatively boring for the PO and technician staff. While the machine was ping-able in the morning, the VNC was not functioning prompting a power-cycle. After that, the machine never came back up Brandon and Lee determined the hard drive had failed requiring. This forced us to default back to adjusting the stages manually shot-to-shot using the hardware control in the cell. Many thanks to the operations staff which helped to manage a cell access nightmare of a run-day. 001-005 were used to tweak the target plasma and add the many pigs that were along for today's repeatable shots. We initially had density ramp issues and the combination of Ip/Bt and nl04 had us near a rotation reversal threshold which we needed to avoid by slightly raising the density. The probes were plunged at 0.6 and 0.8 seconds. LBO was supposed to fire at 0.7 but ran into timing and gate valve problems. From 1.3-1.5 seconds, ICRF power was injected from D+E for conditioning and NINJA was also allowed to puff. HIREXSR used the flattop from 0.9-1.25 seconds. 006-029 was the focusing scan with some locked modes thrown in (007,029) stage positions were set relative to 006 = 0 and specified in "ticks" which are 2.0 microns each. the scan was from -13000 to +13000 or +/- 2.6 cm (out of ~1.25 m) and showed a strong variation in focus. This will be GREAT validation data for HIREXSR_DET_ALIGN! shot : ticks ========== 006 : 0 008 : -5,000 009 : +5,000 010 : -10,000 011 : +10,000 012 : -13,000 013 : +13,000 014 : -1,000 016 : +1,000 018 : -2,000 022 : +2,000 026 : -500 027 : +500 028 : He (-82) H (1049) On 028 the NINJA was moved to 1.2 seconds allowing an overlap of the GPI-based Ti and the HIREXSR Ti in the Ohmic plasma. This should give us a cross-calibration of our instrumental. 030-033 we tried to due a single masking test. The "medium" mask (size is written down SOMEWHERE) was used, which required glove-access to the spectrometer. I bumped the crystal stage but we were able to get the line center back to it's nominal position within calibration drift. 032 is a repeat of the target Ohmic plasma w/ NINJA at 1.2 and a smaller effective crystal area. Comparing 028 and 032 HIREXSR Ti and CXRS Ti should confirm the Johann broadening contribution. This run day also helped a number of other groups as repeatable plasmas were used to debug/optimize other diagnostics then HIREXSR. Brian was able to shakedown the ASP, Jerry tweaked the Thomson optics position and Mike measured GPI-based CXRS profiles from the new LFS toroidal periscope. Also, the toroidal field was set to 5.55 (3 sig figs!) at the request of the CECE group to help shakedown their measurement. Bob was able to estimate the drift in the MSE calibration system by observing the same shot over the day, although DNB performance was inconsistent. Cornwall was also doing something with NINJA puffs at the LH launcher, but I'm not aware of the specifics. |

| This run started out well, but after shot 14 we began to toggle between
plasmas and fizzles. Bz seemed to have drifted too positive, and a few shots were used to scan EF4 to compensate. Some changes to the prefill were also made. Unfortunately things did not improve and we had three fizzles in a row, after which seg 1 of 1120517014 was reloaded. We then had five plasmas in a row. Shots 29 and 30 were locked mode shots with disruptions. Shot 30 had lots of runaways. Shots 31 and 33 were fizzles, possibly because of drift in Bz0, but could also have been related to the disruptions/runaways. Some of the early shots had runaways that seemed to be cured by an increase in the prefill. Problems: The OH2 commutation cabinet was not turned on for the first shot, resulting in a fizzle. Problems with HiReX data disk resulted in many entries into the cell. plasma 02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10,11, 12,13,14,16,18,22,26,27,28,29, 30,32 fizzle 01,15,17,19,20,21,23,24,25,31,33 |

Moving NINJA to 1.2 so there is overlap between Ohmic plasma for Ti,B, Ti,Ar comparisons RESULT: excellent shot, get nl04 evolution during the NINJA puff but should have enough photons for transient comparison. NEXT: locked mode shot |
| May 17 2012 04:20:58:647PM | 1120517029 | Matt Reinke | repeat locked mode shot at new focus

| May 17 2012 04:34:59:193PM | 1120517030 | Matt Reinke | tried to get the He-like mask in, but there's an issue.
Worried about moving the alignment so I'll repeat the target ohmic (non-locked mode) and see if we need to realign the crystal rotation stage, perhaps try again with the mask. RESULT: miscommunicated w/ PO and got the locked mode, but long enough to see the line had moved slightly. NEXT: repeat 028 w/ the medium mask in. |
| May 17 2012 04:39:53:960PM | 1120517031 | Matt Reinke | Got the medium mask installed over crystal, need to make sure to get the z-line back to nominally where it belongs.
RESULT: fizzle :( NEXT: repeat Ohmic target w/ medium mask |
| May 17 2012 04:59:50:020PM | 1120517032 | Matt Reinke | ohmic target w/ medium mast
RESULT: excellent shot. got the line position back to nominally the same location. NINJA puff into a rotation reversal, that should be interesting. NEXT: locked mode calibration w/ medium mask so that 031 and 032 can be used to check the Ti w/ smaller crystal |
| May 17 2012 05:09:38:260PM | 1120517033 | Matt Reinke | repeat locked mode (029) calibration. NINJA on at 1.3 (just to see what happens) and Briand is bravely poking into the locked mode.
RESULT: fizzle. Should be OK to use the 029 locked mode for the comparison of 032. NEXT: last shot (thanks for all the cell accesses!) |
