| SL plan for 5/18
MP 553 Creation of revearsed sheer current profile using LH on low Ip plasmas A main goal is to reproduce the previous full-NI RS plasmas and to measure pitch angles with finer resolution + more reliable calibration. First half will be low density experiment where LH performs well. LH launcher conditioning has not yet completely done, and we expect the first 5-10 shots are required to reach a required LH power and pulse length. We will change phasing, Ip to see the variation on MSE. We also change scan Bt to see the effect on LH reflectmeter baseline. In the second half, the density will be ramp-up from 0.5-1.0e20 and do some exploratory experiment. Low density 1) reproduce target discharge (1101119017) 5-10 shots Ip (500kA) ne (0.5), pulse lengths will be based on this LH starts from 400kW for 1s. Gradually increase LH power using 0.5s pulse 500kA, Phasing 90deg. ne_ave=0.5e20, LH=0.8-1MW LH pulse length 0.5 - 1s test CaF2 injection for a few plasmas. 1-a) Different phasing (75, 105 deg) 3-4 shots 2) Scan plasma current (300, 700, 900kA) max 5 shots 3a) Try 7T for comparison (2 shots) this is to see if the baseline of LH reflectometer can be reduced... 3b) (low priority)Transient Ip ramp/down 5 shots With Density ramp-up (0.5e20 to 1e20 for 1s) 4) Lower field (4T, 3T) - 3 shots 5) Limited discharge/Upper-Lower single null 3 shots |

| SL summary 2012/05/18
MP 553 Creation of revearsed sheer current profile using LH on low Ip plasmas PO: R. Parker SL: S. Shiraiwa The experiment started smoothly, but after a few discharges, the condition of DNB turns out to be worse than originally reported and we decided not to use DNB and consequently MSE. First step was LH conditioning and to reproduce full NI plasmas we obtained in 1101019 and 1101119 with longer LH pulse.Since MSE was not available we decided to condition LH more carefully. Plasma current and density are mostly fixed at 500kA and 0.3-0.4e20, and the conditioning went well quite smoothly (no 12 trip, 5 one trip among 21 attempts). It reached to 800kW with 0.75 s at shot #25 Although one of the main attempt of this MP was not possible, we got very close to what we obtained in the past in terms of LHCD, and also we observed a couple of interesting MHD activities. As the power increase, we first observed an coherent fluctuation in PCI, soft-Xray signals (shot 10). (Is this the same as what David observed before? I do not remember if we observed this in PCI, but I may be wrong...) In shot 16, a stable LHCD with Vloop = 0.16V was obtained. However, after this shot, we started to get an MHD activity triggered during LH pulse, which degrade LHCD efficiency. Shot 23 is most clear example. The mode seems to be widely spread in an inner part of the core region, and the frequency is low 5-10kHz. Shot 21-24 was dedicated for Bt field scan to see its effect on the baseline of LH reflectometer signal. It appears the baseline is not sensitive to this. |

| Run went very well for the first 16 shots, with no fizzles and only one dud due to a failure in the EF3 supply (shot 2). But beginning with shot 17 we developed into the "every other shot mode", and early runaways began to be a problem. In fact, shot 22 shut down due to the runaway protection shutdown.Tuning the early prefill did not seem to have much effect, neither on the fizzles nor on the runawys.
Neverhteless, lower hybrid ran quite well, with pulses of 0.75 ms, power levels up to 800 kW with few if any trips. It is clear that forming a stable current profile with LHCD is a challenge. Scorecard: 26 plasma attempts, 22 fulllength shots, one dud (due to PS failure), 2 fizzles and 1 runaway shutdown. |

| May 18 2012 08:48:36:657AM | 1120518001 | Ron Parker | For shot 1 we'll load 1120516012 in segment 2 with the current reduced to 500 kA. We'll load shot 1120517010 in segment 1. |
| May 18 2012 09:31:38:960AM | 1120518001 | Ron Parker | Shot 1 went well, full length. LH pulse was clean at 500 kW, nice sawtooth stabilazation and good electron heating, even though loop voltage was only reduced to ~ 0.5 V |
| May 18 2012 09:41:23:153AM | 1120518002 | Ron Parker | Dud! No EF3 -- It happens "once in a blue moon" -- but when was the last time the mooon was blue? |
| May 18 2012 09:54:41:697AM | 1120518003 | Ron Parker | Shot came back.
NINJA was enabled even though shot plan requested that it be disabled. Who is responsible for NINJA? |

| May 18 2012 02:04:48:630PM | 1120518015 | Ron Parker | Again, shot 15 ran full length. Argon at 70 ms bumped up density from ~ 3.5e19 m-2 to 4e19 m-2. |
| May 18 2012 02:25:41:830PM | 1120518016 | Ron Parker | Same-o, same-o. Next, kill Ar pulse since it sets lower limit on density |

| May 18 2012 03:50:29:063PM | 1120518021 | Ron Parker | Shot ran OK, but current drive efficiency seems to degrade at ~ 1.1 s.
Nice heating to over 4 keW just before the efficeincy drops. Next: raise field to ~ 7 T (193 kA) |
| May 18 2012 04:03:52:717PM | 1120518022 | Ron Parker | Shot 22 was a runaway shutdown!
Reload shot 20 |
| May 18 2012 04:20:43:260PM | 1120518023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 came back, but early runaways still a problem. |
| May 18 2012 04:33:50:420PM | 1120518024 | Ron Parker | Shot 24 had a field ramp to 6.9 T; apparently no effect on Seung Gyou's baseline.
Next: back to 5.4 flat top, raise LH power |
| May 18 2012 05:01:55:227PM | 1120518025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 ran full length |
