Session leader plan for 1120601
SL: G. Wallace
PO: W. Rowan

1) Start from 1120530029. USN, 5.3 T, 800 kA. LH from 0.8-1.3 s, 50 kW/klystron, 40 kV, 90 deg phasing. Checkout of S.G. Baek's LH probe diagnostic as necessary.

2) Return to conditions from 1120518025. Increase LH power and pulse length carefully to 1.0 MW for 1.0 s without faulting. Adjust outer gap and launcher position to optimize coupling and power handling. Scan launched n|| and plasma current to avoid undesirable MHD activity.

3) If time allows, move LH earlier in the pulse to assess ability to run in the current ramp-up.

Run summary for 1120601
SL: G. Wallace
PO: W. Rowan

The run was overall quite a success. LH power was increased to ~900 kW for 750 ms. Not quite the 1 MW for 1 s benchmark we wanted but close. The first several shots were at high density (1-1.5e20) for checking out S.G. Baek's spectrum analyzer probe diagnostic. High power operation at high density proved a bit problematic. Increasing the outer gap to > 2cm seemed to help. Arcing appeared to be due to heating of B row septa which would then inject Fe, Mn, etc.

Once we returned to low density the power increased readily all day. Good results were obtained at 90 and 75 deg phasing, but 60 deg phasing had high reflection coefficients and more breakdown on the plasma side. Saw some of the undesirable MHD activity but not as bad as on 1120518.

Shots 28 and 29 had LH starting at 0.15 s. Shot 28 was at ~400 kW and ran through without issues. Shot 29 had ~600 kW and triggered the DPCS_XJUMP soft abort. In the future we need to consider turning off or desensitizing the runaway shutdown when we are doing LH in the early part of the current ramp.

This run was for MP605 "LH2 lower hybrid launcher checkout and conditioning" Session Leaders: SL: Greg Wallace and Syun'ichi Shiraiwa. In addition, MSE data was taken for current profile during LHCD.

The experiment consisted of four parts
1. Using shot 1120530029 (USN, 5.3 T, 800 kA.) as a starting point, a series of shots ( 001-014) was run with LH for diagnostic checkout.
2, Using shot 1120518025, as a starting point, a LH power scan (015 - 027) was run and coupling and power handling were optimized.
3. Two shots (028 and 029) were run to assess ability to apply LH in the current ramp-up.
4. A locked mode shot (030) was run for rotation calibration of the X-ray Imaging Diagnosic. The shot loaded for this was 1120517029.

All shots produced useful plasmas but for one OH crowbar. (015). Later in the day, the shot rate was lengthened to 15 minutes due to concern about TF heating.

Score Card
29 plasma

Jun 1 2012 09:09:41:373AM1120601001Greg WallaceClean LH shot at 50 kW/klystron, 90 deg phasing. No issues on LH camera. Next shot will go up to 80 kW/klystron. Atma looks S & T.
Jun 1 2012 09:23:45:780AM1120601002Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 80 kW/klystron, 90 deg phasing, 365 kW net power. Some brighter spots on B row septa. Slight decrease in loop voltage, maybe 0.05-0.1 V?

Cell access to allow SG to put in attenuation on his probe diagnostic. Next shot will increase to 120 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 09:35:02:123AM1120601003Greg WallaceBody current fault on klystron 7. No power.
Jun 1 2012 09:48:06:367AM1120601004Greg WallaceFizzle.
Jun 1 2012 10:07:36:123AM1120601005Greg WallaceSome arcing on plasma side B row at 120 kW/klystron, 90 deg, 540 kW net power. Next shot will go back to 80 kW/klystron and increase outer gap from ~15 to ~19 mm.
Jun 1 2012 10:23:01:337AM1120601006Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 80 kW/klystron. No more bright spots on B row. Increasing outer gap seems to have helped, although gap did not increase as much as expected?

Go back to 120 kW/klystron for next shot. Also increase outer gap by another 2mm.
Jun 1 2012 10:34:11:197AM1120601007Greg WallaceProblems again on the B row at 120 kW/klystron. Outer gap change was not loaded properly for this shot. Next shot will decrease to 100 kW/klystron and get proper outer gap programming.
Jun 1 2012 10:55:44:133AM1120601008Greg WallaceClean LH shot at 100 kW/klystron, 460 kW net power. Some signs of heating on B row septa later in the LH pulse. Still ~10x cutoff density on LH Langmuir probes. Big density jump on top D and mid D probes. Will increase outer gap by another 2mm for next shot and increase to 110 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 11:02:51:957AM1120601009Greg WallaceClean LH shot at 110 kW/klystron, 500 kW net power. LH camera shows some brighter spots on the B row but no breakdown. Bigger outer gap seems to be helping. Density is still plenty high on the LH Langmuir probes.

Next shot increase outer gap by another 2mm and go up to 120 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 11:19:50:150AM1120601010Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 120 kW/klystron, 550 kW net. Slight signs of heating on B row septa on LH camera. Celaxis for SG to reconnect his cables.

Will increase outer gap by another ~2 mm or so for next shot. Go up to 130 kW/klystron for next shot.
Jun 1 2012 11:26:35:713AM1120601011Greg WallaceKlystron 7 body current fault. No LH power.
Jun 1 2012 11:45:10:633AM1120601012Greg WallaceSome hot spots on B and C rows, but no breakdown at 130 kW/klystron. Next shot will increase density to 1.5e20. Decrease power to 100 kW/klystron, too.
Jun 1 2012 11:56:45:940AM1120601013Greg WallaceKlystron 6 body current fault. Try again with initial power ramp from 40-100 instead of 50-100 kW.
Jun 1 2012 12:13:52:543PM1120601014Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 1.45e20, 100 kW/klystron for SG. Next shot will go back to conditions from 1120518025 (low density) and we will try to increase power from there.
Jun 1 2012 12:24:49:530PM1120601015Greg WallaceDisruption at 0.66 s.
Jun 1 2012 12:45:40:467PM1120601016Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 100 kW/klystron, 90 deg. Low density, 500 kA discharge. Lots of current drive! Next shot will go up to 120 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 01:00:55:190PM1120601017Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 120 kW/klystron. About 0.3V steady. Go on to 140 kW/klystron for next shot.
Jun 1 2012 01:40:11:900PM1120601018Greg WallaceBody current fault on klystron 7. No LH.
Jun 1 2012 01:59:40:353PM1120601019Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 140 kW/klystron, 600 kW net power. Steady at about 0.3 V. Next shot will increase to 160 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 02:19:11:697PM1120601020Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 160 kW/klystron, 90 deg, 675 kW net. Next shot will go to 75 deg phasing, same power.
Jun 1 2012 02:33:49:467PM1120601021Greg Wallace160 kW/klystron, 75 deg, 700 kW net power. Steady loop voltage of 0.4 V. Next shot will increase to 170 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 02:49:11:813PM1120601022Greg WallaceAnother clean LH pulse at 170 kW/klystron, 75 deg.

Next shot will go to 180 kW/klystron, except klystron 3 which maxes out at 175 kW.
Jun 1 2012 03:10:12:180PM1120601023Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 180 kW/klystron (except 175 on #3), 800 kW net. No bad MHD on this shot? Next shot will go up to 190 kW/klystron (except 175 on #3).
Jun 1 2012 03:32:39:630PM1120601024Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 190 kW/klystron (except 175 on #3), about 830 kW net. Next shot will go to 200 kW except 190 on #1 and 175 on #3. More power, Igor!
Jun 1 2012 03:49:18:960PM1120601025Greg Wallace200 kW/klystron, 850 kW net power. Next shot will go to 60 deg phasing and 210 kW/klystron (except #1 (190), #2 (200), and #3 (175)).
Jun 1 2012 04:11:34:250PM1120601026Greg WallaceSeveral faults at 60 deg phasing, 210 kW/klystron. Looks like breakdown on the plasma side. A small injection just before LH turns on, but probably not the cause of the problems. Will go back to 75 deg phasing, 210 kW/klystron for next shot and add extra beam pulse for MSE. Increase pulse length to 750 ms.
Jun 1 2012 04:23:00:547PM1120601027Greg WallaceClean LH pulse at 210 kW/klystron, 750 ms. A bit of glow on septum between 15/16 B row. Next shot will move LH to the current ramp. LH will be 80 kW/klystron at 40 kV from .15 to 1.15 s.
Jun 1 2012 04:42:27:653PM1120601028Greg WallaceClean 1.0s LH pulse starting at 0.15 s. Sawteeth delayed from .36 to .46 s. Next shot will increase from 80 to 120 kW/klystron.
Jun 1 2012 04:55:13:360PM1120601029Greg WallaceDisruption at 0.5 s. Several LH faults before the disruption. Last shot with LH for the day. Next shot will be locked mode calibration for HIREX.

Jun 1 2012 08:48:04:737AMBill RowanLH timing request and beam timing request
MSE and polarimeter (current measurement) want a 100 ms period during BT and IP flatop. LH SL suggest that the period be provided before and after the LH pulse with allowance for beam off for mse just before the the LH pulse.
LH will be from 0.7 to 1.2
DNB is operating with a 75ms on/25 ms off cycle. It turns on at 100, 200, etc.
This should be consistent with requests
