MP 704: observation of current density profile change in LH discharges with polarimeter system

Target plasma/LH in order to successfully observe the polarimeter signal response to current density profile change driven by LH

-- flat nl_04 during LH, so that polarimeter signal change mainly comes from current density profile change
-- Successful current drive (loop voltage approaching 0V) with high LH power

=========Shot plan======================================
a)Repeat previous trophy LHCD shots (reference:1120601017). LH start time 0.7s, stop time 1.2s. LH phasing 90deg. Scan the LH power.(4-6 shots)
(1) LH=400kW
(2) LH=600kW
(3) LH=800kW
(4) LH=1MW

b)With successful current drive at highest achievable LH power, scan LH pulse window. (4 shots)
(1)Two shots: LH pulse from 0.8s to 1.3s
(2)Two shots: LH pulse from 0.6s to 1.1s

c)Scan nl_04,Ip. LH pulse window:0.7s-1.2s(10 shots)
(1)nl_04=4e19, Ip=350kA, 500kA, 650kA, 800kA,1MA
(2)nl_04=5e19, Ip=350kA, 500kA, 650kA, 800kA,1MA

d)Pick shots from c) with biggest loop voltage change, scan LH pulse window(4-6 shots)
(1)LH pulse: 0.8s to 1.3s
(2)LH pulse: 0.6s to 1.1s
(3)LH pulse: 0.6s to 1.35s
(4)LH pulse: 0.6s to 0.85s&1.1s to 1.35s

e)Pick shots from c) with biggest loop voltage change, scan LH phasing (2-4 shots)
(1) LH phasing at 75 deg

This was the first physics run with LH(MP704) requested by polarimeter diagnostics. The purpose of the experiment is to observe the polarimeter signal change due to current density profile change driven by LH. The LH is supposed to drive the current at the middle or edge of the plamsa from MSE measurement, so we expect the core plasma current will decease if the total Ip is constant. From numerical projection from EFIT, the polar chord#1 is expected to be most sensitive to the the core current change, while the chord#2(chord#3) should has less(no) response.

It was a successful day to build a data base for polarimeter measurement with LHCD plasma. There were 33shots with 27 plasma. We have 23 plasma for polarimeter, with another 3 plasma for locked mode and MSE calibration request. With these data, we have better understanding of the polarimeter response during LH.

The LH performed great, with steady 800kW power for most of the plasma. The polarimeter, however, was not working at best condition, especially for chord#2, due to 2nd amplifier problem. For most of the shots, we have seen phase decease during LH. By using FROT_REF signal as a bechmark for noise, I have picked a couple of shots with low noise during LH, and thus are more reliable than others for current density profile change analysis.

The good shots: 4,7,14,15,18,21

For shot 4,7, there are no clear polar phase response to LH, while changes are shown for other shots. More careful analysis need to be done to decouple the density change effect on the polar signal, and also find possible method to compensate the phase drift by using FROT_REF.

The machine, LH, and DNB all ran quite well today, and we got through most of the run plan for the primary MP. MSE was also piggy-backing, and reported getting good data on most shots. There were 4 fizzles, one no TF, one ACK failure, and one unintentional repeat of a locked-mode calibration shot, due to PO error. Shot 28 was short, apparently killed by a natural impurity injection. Shot 32 was a current/position scan, inner-wall limited, for MSE.
