| The second half (1pm - 6pm) will be an MP for current profile measurements in strong LHCD.
MP 705: Current profile measurements in plasmas with Strong LHCD SL: Mumgaard PO: Parker This will be part b and c of the MP as we obtained a good power scan yesterday during the Polarimeter shake-down. The second half runday will be run tomorrow morning where we will finish what we don't accomplish today and revist the power scan. Target plasma: 1120601025. Extend flat top to 1.9s. nl04: 0.3e20 m^-2 Ip = 500kA, vary to avoid MHD, but then run fixed for phase and density scans. Bt = 5.4 T Beam prescription: 16 pulses starting at 0.3s, 75ms on -25ms off, 48-50keV, > 6.5A. Check MSE data between shots, repeat if necessary. ================ Shot Plan =============================================== (0) We will skip the locked mode and use the one just prior on Chi Gao's run. (1) MSE plasma size scan Ref 1120516020. Flatten density. Decrease Ar puff. (2) Establish reliable LH performance at 800-900kW at 75deg phasing, stable density, no MHD, significant current drive and 0.7s LH pulse length starting at 0.7s. (3) LH Phase scan. - 60 deg - 75 deg - 90 deg - 105 deg (4) Quasicontinous LH phase scan. LH 1s long starting at 0.7s. Phase scan from 60-105deg with 5deg changes every 100ms. | Run summary of MP702(first part)
We tried 13 shots before the TF crowbar's problem. 3 fizzles: shot 3,7,12. 1 early disruption: 1(runaway shutdown) 1 good locked mode: 4. Disruption at 1.58s, but good enough for HiReX calibration 8 full plasma: 2,5,6,8,9,10,11,13. Of them shot 8,9,10,11,13 are good shots for analysis. The run ended earlier because of the TF problem. (1) Locked mode good locked mode: 1120607004. Planned to have another locked mode the end of the run, but the TF problem stops the run. (2) Ip = 0.8MA. Density scan: Shot 5 - 12. Shot 5,6 the LBO didn't work properly. No injection for some time points. Shot 7 fizzle Shot 8,9: ne_ave~ 0.7. LOC. Co-current rotation. The cold pulse propagation was not purely diffusive, non-local hear transport. Shot 10,11: ne_ave~ 1.0 & 1.1. SOC. Counter-current rotation. But the non-local still existed. Shot 12: Fizzle. Programmed to higher current, but fizzled. Due to time issue, we moved to higher current (1.1MA) (3)Ip = 1.1MA. Shot 13 Shot 13: ne_ave ~ 1.2. LOC. Co-current rotation. Heat transport is non-local. | A disappointing run.
The run began with a PO error. The SL requested a locked mode shot for a HIREX calibration and specified a shot. This was loaded by the PO, but only in Segment 2 so that another startup could be used in segment 1. It turned out that the locked mode segment in the SL's shot was in segment 4, not segment 1. The loaded shot resulted in a runaway shutdown. After tuning the gas fill, the shot went off well, but there was no locked mode. The problem of the wrong segment was discovered and fixed for shot 3, which did produce the desired locked mode. In hindsight, the entire shot recommended by the SL should have been loaded, with Segment 1 from a recent startup imported after the SL's shot was loaded. After the locked mode shot, the run followed the run plan and basically completed about 1/3 of it. This was all at 800 kA. The SL then decided to push to 1.1 MA and the first shot ran well, but the TF crowbarred. This was in some way not surprising since noise was showing up on some of the diagnostic waveforms from the relevant convertor cabinet (Converter 2, cabinet 3) in previous shots. After changing out 3 blown fuses caused by the crowbar, the supply was tested at 50, 100 and 150 kA, but again crowbarred during the 150 kA test. This time there were no blown fuses, and various boards were checked that were thought to be related to the problem. After trouble shooting, the TF was again tested. This time it did not crowbar at 150 kA, but the signals used to monitor its performance again showed spikes similar to those originally seen and that were associated with the crowbars. At this point it was decided to hi-pot all 60 SCR's in the cabinet, a procedure which, to do safely, would take several hours. With only 2 hours remaining in the run by then it was decided to scrub it so that work could get on with the hi-potting. Scorecard: 13 plasma attempts, 8 through flattop, 1 runaway shutdown, 3 fizzles and 1 disruption. |

It turned out that the shot the SL wanted was programmed in segment 4 from 1120517007, not segment 2 which was loaded. The mistake was to load just segment 2 from that day rather than the whole shot. Interestingly, segment 2 did run but didn't have the right A-coils for locking.Next time: load whole shot, then import segment 1 for a better startup, rather than the reverse. Delay while TF power supplies checked -- some spikes appeared in converter #3 cabinet waveforms. |
