| Today we will run the MP we were planning on running yesterday half day. It will be a full day. We exped delays in the morning to troubleshoot the TF.
MP 705: Current profile measurements in plasmas with Strong LHCD SL: Mumgaard PO: Parker This will be part a, b and c of the MP Part a will be abridge a bit as we obtained a good power scan on 1120606 during the Polarimeter shake-down. Target plasma: 1120601025. We will extend flat top to 1.7s and then to 1.9s if engineering allows it. nl04: 0.35e20 m^-2 Ip = 500kA, vary to avoid MHD, but then run fixed for phase and density scans. Bt = 5.4 T Beam prescription: 16 pulses starting at 0.3s, 75ms on -25ms off, 48-50keV, > 6.5A. Check MSE data between shots, repeat if necessary. ================ Shot Plan =============================================== (1) MSE plasma size scan Ref 1120516020. Flatten density. | Today we ran MP705 which has three parts.
a) LH power scan at constant phase, density and Ip b) LH phase scan at constant density, Ip and high power c) Density scan at constant LH power, phase and density. We did part a shortened version of part a and then attempted part b. Starting at about 1pm after the TF testing. We did a sucessful MSE plasma sweep for shot 11. Shot 12 was at 200kW but had the beam loose inverters. We then did a small LH power scan at 75deg 13: 200kW 14: 600kW; Noted that Vloop and MSE had a big change between these, will want to revisit 400kW. 16: 800kW with ~3kHz MHD at 1.28s We paused to decide what to do about the MHD. Noted the MHD occured with what appeared to be Parametric decay on Seung Gyou's traces and a distinct density profile flattening. Though in this case the MHD didn't appear to significantly affect the loop voltage. The effect on density made us think we could puff our way through it, other ideas included increasing current or lowering the power to move onto the phase scan. We decided to move forward with the power scan and see if the MHD got worse. Requested 900kW of forward power. This would at least tell us how sensitive the MHD onset was to power. 17: Beam didn't fire, had lots of MHD starting earlier, hit LH only 830kW due to coupling. Density was about the same. We stopped to decided what to do about the MHD. It looked like it was triggering at a slow creep down in density. We decided to put in a bit higher density demand at the LH turn on. The idea was that this might prevent the onset of the MHD and the resulting flattening of the density profile. 18: Didn't have the MHD after a more stable density trace. This looked good. Decided to move forward with the phase scan at this power and density traces. 19: Changed phase to 90deg. This had more noise in the MSE pitch angles than we would like. Decided to proceed with the phase scan and revisit later. 20: Requested 60deg phasing. LH faulted out, resulting in an ohmic shot. 21: Repeat. LH faulted again. LH found a problem with the restrikes. Decided to retry. Syunichi pointed out later that the coupling at 60deg is very poor. 22: Lots of LH faulting (cart 3?) Next time try at a higher phasing. 23: Back at 90 deg. Lots of MHD with early onset. 24: 105deg. Same story with the MHD. Overall we learned not to operate the LH a the onset of MHD which appears to depend very sensitively on density and power and we think it might depend on current as well. Overall we had a breakdown of: Nice usable shots: 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19. Lots of MHD 23, 24 LH faults: 22, 20 (ohmic), 21 (ohmic) Bad beam : 12, 17 Early disrupt: 15 Giving us 8 usable and 6 not usable. Next time we run this MP we will revisit the phase scan but at 65deg or more and do a continuous phase scan. We will do a density scan and possibly revisit the power scan. The MHD is going to be a problem. Perhaps when we boronize it will become more avoidable. |

| Jun 8 2012 01:11:48:523PM | 1120608011 | Bob Mumgaard | First (real) shot will be a MSE plasma sweep calibration. Using shot 1120606032 as a starting point and turning off Ar and decreasing density demand to try to keep nebar constant at Cornwall's request.

| Jun 8 2012 01:31:35:733PM | 1120608011 | Bob Mumgaard | Good sweep. Better density, still creeps.
Good ISC and beam and MSE data. Done with MSE sweep. Move on to bringing up the LH power. Next: Target 1120601025 with nel04 0.35. LH at 200kW, 75deg starting at 0.7 until 1.4. ICRF will pulse Jant at 1.6s to check out. |
| Jun 8 2012 01:43:45:170PM | 1120608012 | Bob Mumgaard | Beam lost 2 invertors on the pulses after 1s.
Good ISC, good density. No LH faults. MSE looks good. Some changes in pitch angle, Repeat to get later beam pulses. Next: Repeat with same LH to get all the beam pulses. Up Argon to 65ms. ICRF checks out again. |
| Jun 8 2012 02:18:35:223PM | 1120608013 | Bob Mumgaard | Beam was good throughout.
Good ISC, good density. Good LH at ~200kW MSE looks good. Doesn't changes in pitch angle, doesn't come all the way back, (no time) Next: Up the LH to 600kW, no other changes. |
| Jun 8 2012 02:19:33:393PM | 1120608014 | Bob Mumgaard | Beam was good throughout.
Good ISC, good density. Good LH at ~400kW MSE looks good. Large changes in pitch angle, doesn't come all the way back, (still no time) Next: Up the LH to 800kW, flattop to 1.9s. |
| Jun 8 2012 02:25:36:303PM | 1120608015 | Bob Mumgaard | Nope.
Next: Repeat |
| Jun 8 2012 03:08:50:453PM | 1120608016 | Bob Mumgaard | No beam. Good ISC.
LH looks good, only +30kW in net. Gets MHD at 1.0+s. Possibly due to a sliding down in density. Next: Same, just add a bit of puff to up density to see if that prevents onset. |
| Jun 8 2012 03:18:43:577PM | 1120608018 | Bob Mumgaard | Good beam. Good ISC.
LH looks good, density stays up. No MHD onset. MSE data looks good, big changes and comes back to Ohmic. Next: Change phase to 90deg. All else the same. |
| Jun 8 2012 03:36:17:060PM | 1120608019 | Bob Mumgaard | Good beam. Good ISC.
LH looks good, density stays up, then creeps down toward the end and we get MHD at 1.3s MSE data looks noisier. Will revisit. Next: Change phase to 60deg. All else the same. |
| Jun 8 2012 03:48:12:077PM | 1120608020 | Bob Mumgaard | Good beam. Good ISC.
LH faults before doing much. This will be our Ohmic shot. Next: Repeat. |
| Jun 8 2012 04:43:33:203PM | 1120608021 | Bob Mumgaard | Good beam. Good ISC.
No LH, dies early. This is another Ohmic shot. Next: Repeat, LH thinks they know the problem. |
| Jun 8 2012 04:39:17:643PM | 1120608022 | Bob Mumgaard | Good beam. Good ISC.
LH has coupling problems. Next: Go back to 90deg phasing. |
| Jun 8 2012 08:43:24:407PM | 1120608024 | Bob Mumgaard | Ran well. Good beam and ISC.
MSE data looks good. Lots of MHD, starting early in the pulse. Thanks to the everybody for staying late. |
