Today we will continue (finish?) running MP705 which was run for the second half of 1120608. This will be the first half of the run day today.

MP 705: Current profile measurements in plasmas with Strong LHCD
SL: Mumgaard
PO: Hutchison

Required subsystems:
LH
DNB
no Cryopump, no ICRF
Overnight ECDC in D.

This will be part c of the MP, a shot-to-shot density scan followed by a limited discharge. We will use extended discharges to enable us to monitor the decay of the current drive back to Ohmic.

Target plasma: 1120608023. Increase current to 550kA. Note th extended flattop.

Beam prescription: 16 pulses starting at 0.3s, 75ms on, 25ms off, 48-50keV, > 6.5A.

Check MSE data between shots, repeat if necessary.

================ Shot Plan ===============================================

(1) MSE plasma size scan Ref 1120608011. Try to flatten nebar.

(2) Bring LH power up to 800kWnet. No need for long flattop, (ref 1120608014 @ 550kA). LH start at 0.7s, end at 1.4s.
Note MHD activity at high power. If present increase Ip.

(3) Shot-to-shot density scan. LH at 75deg, 800kWnet. Adjust forward power shot to shot to try to keep net same.
- 0.3 nel04
- 0.4
- 0.5
- 0.6
- 0.75
- 0.9 (only if we saw some LH effect in 0.75nel04 shot)

(4) Limited discharge. Modify target shot or recalculate predictors for shot 1100820003. Flattop to 1.7s, LH at 75deg, 800kWnet 0.7s to 1.4s.

If time:
(5) Quasicontinous LH phase scan. LH 1s long starting at 0.7s. Phase scan from 60-105deg with 5deg changes every 100ms.
endif

(6) Repeat MSE plasma sweep from part 1

(7) Locked mode. See HiReX Sr team for reference.

11 different conditions + LH checkout. May require some repeats.

================ Required Diagnostics ==================================
MSE-DNB. ECE, Hard X-ray camera, Lyman-alpha array, Thomson, Reflectometer:C-middle horn, TCI, Xtomo

As far as I know the first part of Tuesday is an extension of the research of last Friday. Therefore settings should be taken from that run.

I'm assuming we should ECDC according to whatever regimen we have been following.

In addition we have a request for:
Fill H-bottom with 6 psi He4 Hybrid DISABLED (PG5)
Which is to enable a trace of Helium to be added.

Today we ran MP705 which has three parts.
a) LH power scan at constant phase, density and Ip
b) LH phase scan at constant density, Ip and high power
c) Density scan at constant LH power, phase and density.

We did part c today
We started at 9:00am and went to 1:00pm.

Shot 1 was a successful MSE plasma sweep.

Brought LH up to 560kW on shot 2 but lost invertors early in the beam pulse
shot 3 brought LH up to 700kW.

shot 4 bought power up to >800kW, but had no beam. Only slight MHD in toward the end of the LH.

We then did a plasma density scan. PO Hutchison did a good job of flattening out the density trace on these shots.

5: 0.4 nel04
6: 0.5
7: 0.6 w/ LH faults, marked drop off in current drive.
8: 0.6 again, LH faults
9: 0.7 with LH faults. By this point we have no CD.

Decide to go back down in density before moving onto limited.
10: 0.55
11: No LH, so this is an Ohmic ref.
12: 0.5

Then move to limited discharge. We modified the existing discharge to be limited.
13: Just barely limited at 0.7nel04, some CD.
14: Early disruption due to Mo injection.
15: Fully limited at 0.7nel04, some CD.

Note that shots 6 and 12 are great shots for repro comparison.

Looking at the data it seems here is more noise in the MSE polarization angle than we'd like. There is also drift which the ISC does not account for. We'll have to look into this.

Overall a sucessful run. Seung Gyou had some good data concerning parametric decay. Raising the current a bit from Fri successfully avoided the MHD that plagued the earlier running of this MP and we finished part c of the MP. Need to review data to make sure we've covered everything.

Good shots:
1,3,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,15 (11)
DNB errors:

Ohmic:

Work continued on MP704, "observation of current
density profile changes in LH discharges with the polarimeter system".
The best current drive case from the morning was determined and re-run
for several discharges to judge reproducibility of the polarimeter
signals. Several Ohmic discharges without LH were also taken for
comparison. The inner two polarimeter chords showed a significant
reduction in rotation during the lower hybrid pulse. It was also clear
from these data that changes made to the position of the polarimeter
detectors relative to the focal plane of the focusing mirrors had
reduced the vibrational noise levels. In addition, small changes to
the TF current programming improved the signal baselines and reduced the
drift.

_______

Tokamak ran very well. MSE and Polarimetry well. Beam pretty well.
LH not too bad. Most of the objectives were attained.
Learned something about the fizzle detector which slowed us down.

Jun 12 2012 09:05:30:093AM1120612001Bob MumgaardThis will be a outer gap scan MSE calibration shot. Ref shot 1120608011. Density adjusted.

Result: Beam looks good, MSE looks good, ISC looks good. In the future extend the Bt flattop to get 5.4T into the entire rampdown.

Next: Load 112060823 with current at 550kA. LH at ~500kW, 75deg, 0.7s-1.4s.

Jun 12 2012 09:26:19:723AM1120612002Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Beam looses 2 inverters after 0.7s. 560kWn LH, cut out a bit early due to collector over temperature.

Cell access to ajust gain on Mo camera.

Next: Increase LH power. All 8 beam invertors. Enable Ar, Enable He

Jun 12 2012 09:38:51:530AM1120612003Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Beam blows fuses at 1.6s. 700kWn LH, solid pulse.

Cell access to replace DNB fuses.

Next: Increase LH power to 800kWn.

Jun 12 2012 09:56:40:867AM1120612004Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Beam fails to fire, limit amp was left out. 810kWn LH, solid pulse out to 1.4s. Good density, though has a dip at 1.0s. This is our target for the density scan.

Next: Repeat with DNB.
Jun 12 2012 10:16:59:540AM1120612005Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 810kWn LH, solid pulse out to 1.4s. Good density, flatter this time. This is our low density baseline.

Next: Up density to 0.5
Jun 12 2012 10:26:51:313AM1120612006Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 810kWn LH, solid pulse out to 1.4s. Good density. Some MHD on at the end of the LH pulse. More heating on the LH launcher.

Next: Up density to 0.6. Extend the Ip and Bt flattop by 75ms to give a good penultimate beam pulse showing return to ohmic. LH will adjust gap a bit to limit coupler heating. We'll see what happens with the MHD as we go up in density.
Jun 12 2012 10:50:30:860AM1120612007Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 810kWn LH, faults out at 1.0s. Good density. Some MHD at 10-15kHz with its harmonic spins up and down. Not saw tooth stabilized. Markedly less pitch angle changes.

Next: Lengthen Bt flatop. Increase Rgap for better LH coupling. Repeat. Same density and same Plh.
Jun 12 2012 11:02:28:560AM1120612008Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 810kWn LH, faults out at 1.1s and restrikes. Very nice density. More MHD at 10-15kHz with its harmonic spins up and down, less than last shot. Not saw tooth stabilized. Very small pitch angle changes. Flattop looks good, includes the penultimate beam pulse.

Next: We will go up once more in density and then revisit the lower densities. Next is 0.7 nel04. Increase outer gap a bit for LH. Shoelace will shoot into 0.5-0.55s.
Jun 12 2012 11:18:56:087AM1120612009Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 810kWn LH, faults out at 0.9s and restrikes twice. Very nice density at 0.7. Some broadband MHD. Does not look to be driving any current. Background subtraction issues during the LH restrikes.

Next: We are going to go to 0.55 on density to get a finer resolution of the drop off in current drive. Reload the gap from shot 7 for LH. Everything else stays the same.
Jun 12 2012 11:52:19:177AM1120612010Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. 825kWn LH, Solid pulse. Very nice density at 0.55. Get the spin up snake-like MHD. Drives significant current. Drive decreases when density bumps up at the end of LH.

Next: Go down in density to 0.5. This will repeat shot 6.
Jun 12 2012 11:55:36:030AM1120612011Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. No LH power due to body fault. This is the ohmic shot.

Next: Repeat once more. Then Limited.
Jun 12 2012 12:13:16:333PM1120612012Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. Solid LH power throughout. Good density. Some minor MHD at the very end of the LH pulse. Good pitch angle profiles.

Next: Limited shot with same current and LH power.
Jun 12 2012 12:32:26:830PM1120612013Bob MumgaardResult: Good ISC. Good beam. LH faults once. Good density at 0.66nel04. Just between limited and diverted. No MHD. Good pitch angle profiles.

Next: Repeat with shape more limited.
Jun 12 2012 12:57:03:570PM1120612013Bob MumgaardResult: Early disruption. Lots of Mo.

Next: Try one more time for this limited discharge. Decrease Ar. Last shot of my allotment.
Jun 12 2012 01:04:05:460PM1120612014Bob MumgaardResult: Early disruption with lots of Mo.

Next: Repeat. turn off Ar. Hope.
Jun 12 2012 01:03:37:717PM1120612015Bob MumgaardResult: Good shot. Good beam. Good ISC. Good limited discharge. Good density. Some loop voltage change. Pitch angles change.

Next: Done with my allotment. Handover to polarimetry.
