After the run we are doing some beam into gas shots to characterize the views of the MSE system and the beam width.

We have the Halpha grating in the UT spectrometer. We have the MSE LP and the PEMs are out.

We have the beam duct monitor connected, the BES fibers are coupled into the spectrometer and currently MSE F02 is connected to A5 via the lens based coupler.

The plan is to do a few parts.
0) Test, get correct pressure for good signal level.
2) Vary pressure up x2 and down x1/2, 4 shots.
3) Look through 5 MSE views, 5 shots.

Pause and go permutate the BES fibers in the MSE disector, moving them to vertical orientation. Take an ISC shot to get get flatfield.
4) Do a 5-7 point current scan to get beam width measurements.

Pause and change the permutation.
5) Repeat the 5-7 point current scan.

We took some beam into gas shots without field.

The good shots were:
27- 1 mtorr
28- 2 mtorr
30- 0.5mtorr
32- 0.7mtorr
33- 3 mtorr for MSE F03
34- "" F09
35- "" F05

Then took ISC shot 503 at posC for flat field
Moved BES fibers to vertical position.
Couldn't get beam to go.
Took ISC shot 504 at posC for flat field

Scrubbed rest of run, need to fix beam and revisit to get the beam width.

These shots sought to vary the collisionality and pedestal parameters in a variety of H-modes (EDA, ELM-free, and ELMy) to study the effect on in-out boron impurity asymmetries and measure the total velocity vector in the pedestal.

Overall a productive day, considering the challenges. Parts of the plan were skipped, and others extended. Profile analysis needs to be done to see the range in collisionalities, and compare CXRS density and velocity profiles.

The first 9 shots were dedicated to sorting out a variety of issues:
1. Post-boronization (1 shot, by shot #2 full-length EDA H-modes)
2. CXRS channel saturation
3. Shaping changes (should have picked a reference shot from 1110201 instead of 1120614) for H-mode and edge Thomson optimization
4. Software issues preventing Physop from saving changes (eventually had to switch out J. Irby for S. Wolfe)

There were a variety of disruptions due to:
1. putting the RF too early during a crossover
2. putting the RF too early, during a time the plasma hadn't fully developed
3. Iron injections during the JFT-2M shape. Moved Surface Science Station (S^3) back, and it worked, not sure if it was the cause.

RUN PLAN RESULTS
==============================
PART 0: Boronization recovery (~4 shots)
Maximum 4 shots. You get no more, C-Mod. => Worked well, first shot disrupted, H-mode on shot #2

PART 1: EDA H-modes (~9 shots).
Reference shot: 1120614024. TO CHANGE: L-gap to ~6mm, different RF trace (see above)
1a. Ip=1.0 [MA], nl04=1.0e20 [m^-2] => #10 (many shots before, only saturating
on various CXRS channels, and shape not optimized for edge Thomson)
1b. Ip=0.8 [MA], nl04=0.8e20 [m^-2] => skipped
1c. Ip=0.6 [MA], nl04=0.6e20 [m^-2] => #13,#14

PART 2: ELM-free H-modes (~5 shots)
One ICRF pulse, 3.5MW from 0.6 to 1.5s
May try ICRF pulses to force start/stop of ELM-free H-mode
2a. Ip=1.0 [MA], nl04=0.8e20 [m^-2] => #16
2b. Ip=0.8 [MA], nl04=0.6e20 [m^-2] => skipped
=> ADDED
2c. Ip=1.1 [MA], nl04=0.8e20 [m^-2] => #17
2d. Ip=1.2 [MA], nl04=0.9e20 [m^-2] => #18
2d. Ip=1.3 [MA], nl04=1.0e20 [m^-2] => #19

PART 3: ELMy H-modes (~7 shots)
3a. Adjust reference shot nl04 demand until ELMy H-modes achieved with the gas puffs present. May also have to vary the JFT-2M strike point if the slot isn??t working => two working ELMy H-modes shots, #25, #26, though second half of these shots went out, due to either radiation or NINJA gas input, TBD
3b. Vary nl04 to vary collisionality => Never reached

Continuation of MP693

shots 27-38: beam-into-gas, no fields

The purpose of these shots is to (a) measure the angle between the MSE sightlines and the DNB trajectory, and (b) to measure the height of the DNB using BES.

We accomplished part (a). Beam ran well, but at the end of the night had a power supply problem which terminated the run.

At the start of the run, we turned off several trees despite a warning from Steve Wolfe that that would have unexpected and bad consequences. The first few shots were OK, then we ran into unexpected and bad consequences: BES data acquisition, which is in the DNB tree (which was left ON) failed to trigger twice. So we swallowed our pride, turned the trees back on, and after that we experienced no further problems with the BES data acquisition trigger.

We also got a nice scan of MSE/BES signal strength versus torus pressure, from about 0.5 mTorr to about 3.2 mTorr.

Physics Operator Summary for Thursday, 22-Jun-2012
MP#648 Boron Density asymmetry measurements
SL: Churchill
PO: Irby, Wolfe
EO: Pfeiffer, Pierson, Fitzgerald

This section of the report primarily covers shot#9-26 (wolfe)
I took over as physop at shot#9 because we discovered that
Alcdaq3 (alcdata-models) was not correctly copying files from
Jim Irby's PCS working directories into the live model directory
during the Load_into_Model operation. Loads from my account/directory
worked fine all day.

Josh verified that a problem existed seeing files in
Irby's working directory from alcdaq3 , but was unable to understand
why or come up with a fix. There seems to be a very long-lived
cache (hours). After several hours, the files from the morning
were picked up correctly. No idea how or why this happened.
This is therefore an unresolved problem
at this time.

One of the first physop issues was a request to "increase the elongation", by
which the SL really meant that he wanted the upper separatrix intersection
with the Thomson Scattering chord to be higher, to place more of the high
resolution TS channels in the pedestal region. It turned out that changing
ZXU was not the most effective way to do this, and more satisfactory results
were obtained by raising the whole plasma raising zcur, first to be flat at
-.015m, instead of ramping down as in the reference shot,
and then to -.012m. It was in fact the change to -.015 that could not
be loaded from Jim Irby's account and led to my taking over as physop.

For shot#9, we set up a 4mm radial position scan (both rcur and clearin)
which was used for most of the rest of the day. The SL run plan called
for 3 current/density steps in EDA h-mode, but because a lot of time had
been lost, only the 1MA and 0.6MA cases were run. The 0.6MA case initially
had a disruption problem at OH1 crossover, which came during the RF
pulse. I speeded up the crossover using the Loadable procedure
oh1_crossover (in TEST_PROS), and we delayed the RF a bit and got a
satisfactory 600kA shot.

Step 2 was ELM-free H-modes at higher current and lower density. It turned
out to be necessary (maybe) to turn the oh1_crossover procedure back off,
and raise the early density a bit, but we eventually got "good" ELM-free
cases at 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3MA.

A locked mode shot (#20, using seg3) disrupted just after 1sec, but was
deemed good enough.

We then moved on to ELMy H-mode condition, which was problematic.
The reference shot was 1101214029, seg2, which I loaded into seg4.
All magnetics predictors (wires 1-8) were recalculated. These shots
suffered from Fe injections, perhaps related to the floor strike hitting
the missing tile area. Increasing the target density and adjusting the RF
timing and program succeeded in getting some decent ELMy examples.
Moving the strike point out by moving RXL out by 1cm on shot#24 led
had a disruption so we moved it back for 25 and 26, which worked.

After the main run was over, the Beam and spectroscopy guys ran a number
of beam into gas shots, with Steve Scott as physop.

The startup looked kind of ratty most of the day. Halpha had a long flat
spot at the peak, sometimes showing bounces, but the rcur postion appeared
to be moving in between 10 and 15msec, with a current hesitation. I made
several tweaks, reducing EF4 from -1320 to -1300 to raise initial Bz0, but
also dropping the pg4, getting down to 15msec, and removing most of the seg1
PG3 puff. This may have helped a little, or not. There were only 2 fizzles,
and they were post-disruption, and no problems with runaways, so functionally
the startup was adequate.
